HI folks,

My son built up a huge Tyranid and then Ork army, then got out of the game around uni time and sold his armies.

Now he's feeling a nostalgic lure for the game again, mentioned getting Space Marines, and I'm heading to London's Dark Sphere to surprise him.

So: I think he/we are only likely to get back into this on Kill Team scale. I'm going to get him a Dark Sphere voucher, but also want to get one unit that we can paint up over the holidays.

So... what is the best starter unit with troops/etc we know we can use in Kill Team or 1000 point games?

Basic troops? Terminators?

Please scatter-gun me with your suggestions
. I only really need one box that we can open on Christmas day, then get out the army painter coloured primer, wash and highlight.... we can augment using a voucher later.

Thanks in advance. Here is part of our last army, which invaded NYC around 5 years ago.

So, Kill Team has a range of unit boxes that will give a full Kill Team in a box (as far as I'm aware - I don't play KT myself).

You can see what Dark Sphere stocks of the range here, if you scroll down to the "Kill Teams" section, a little over halfway down the page.

If it was in-stock, I'd probably suggest the Kill Team starter, given you'd get both an Imperial Space Marine and Death Guard Kill Team, each with a variety of sculpts.

If you're wanting a single troop box option that also fulfills the "Space Marine" brief, I'd suggest either the Phobos Strike Team or the Scout Squad.

There's also the Legionnaire or Nemesis Claw boxes if he's thinking spiky Space Marine, though it doesn't look like Dark Sphere has either in stock.

In terms of something armoured and human, I might also suggest the Imperial Navy Breachers or Arbites Exaction Squad.

As I said at the start, though, I'm not a Kill Team player, so I can't comment on what's good, just what's available

This is, emphatically, why I will continue suggesting nuking Guard and starting over again. It's a legacy army that needs to be rebooted with a new focal point.

Confirmation of why no-one should listen to Kanluwen when it comes to the IG - he doesn't want the IG, he want's Kan's New Model Army...

I'd go for Terminators. The current kit is a fantastic upscaled version of the classic one.

I'd second getting a Kill Team starter box. 2 teams, rules, scenery - everything you need to play other than hobby supplies. You could then branch out and collect other kill teams depending on what takes your fancy. But depends on what your budget is.

If he is thinking Kill Team, Terminators are a no go. They are not in Kill Team.

For small games? You could do worse than a Combat Patrol.

Nice models in there, including the Terminators. Importantly? A ready made army innabox, provided it’s playing against another Combat Patrol set.

Unless you guys are dead set on Kill Team I would suggest a “Combat Patrol” kit. Lots of options for armies, including Space Marines, and it’s a great starting point if you decide to build a larger army. I always recommend this to my friends, myself I have bought the Tyranid, Ultramarine and Black Templar kits and have been happy with all of them. It’s about as cost effective as you can get to enter 40K games. Good luck!

My thinking with a kill team starter set is that it's playable by itself. A single combat patrol box won't let the son play without going and hunting down a gaming group somewhere.

Kill Team Starter set gets my vote, too.

After a long absence, one box will give you two Kill Teams with great models, basic scenery, and rules to get playing as soon as you have built (painting optional!) the models and slotted the MDF scenery together.

From there, you can expand any way you want - different Kill Teams for variety, or flesh out the Death Guard / Space Marine Kill Teams from the starter set to build up to 40K size armies.

Either that, or one of the three 40K starter sets, depending on your budget. This will give you core models for Space Marine and Tyranids armies, enough to play small introductory skirmish games, and you can go on to expand either faction as you please.

Firstly, thanks for all the helpful suggestions. They really made me think. I had chance for some vague questioning of the nipper a few weeks ago and only once in the shop realised the imcompatibility between Kill Team and 40k squads. So I went for 40k, got an Intercessor and an Infernus squad. This made for a very happy, nostalgic Christmas day. We would have spend boxing day painting but DS didn't have the right primers - but this at least gives us the option of swapping.

I would have bought the combat patrol - except they had none in stock. However, since then I realised that the starter set contains nearly all of a Combat patrol for both tyranids and Marines, while the Ultimate starter set contains the full combat patrol for both. Due to Dark Sphere pricing, the Ultimate box is only £14 more than the combat patrol, despite having two complete patrols rather than one.

There aren't too many extra models (Librarian for the Marines, Barbgaunts for the tyranids) but the ultimate starter set also has what looks like usable rules.

So, until they open on Firday we'll consider how useful the Librarian and rules are. I'll also be weighing the odds between selling the Nids or working out whether there's a good quick colour scheme. The idea of painting another swarm (whcih I know I'll end up with)is giving me nightmares. But it will give the Flyrant that we've retained a purpose in life.

If there's any downside over either 40k starter please let me know. As far as I can see they're identical models to the Combat patrol. I guess there will be no weapons choice but I wouldn't miss all the agonising of calculating optimum loadouts or messing with magnets, as we did last time around.

Contrast paints make getting nids table-ready a breeze if you want to bring them up to speed as an opposing force.

I've half a mind to restart mine, and go for 'Hive Fleet Nostromo': black contrast, silver teeth - job done

My current 'synthwave' colour scheme is taking me a while.

is only £14 more

And so it begins! The descent is so much more enjoyable if you don’t fight it

Ha! I am literally having nightmares over exactly this! But thinking we can keep the rules and sell the nids. We're two editions behind at least.
