Hey guys,
I am going deep down the rabbit hole of 40k recently after many years of telling my self I would not. I have fallen in love with the Space Wolves and of course I've already purchased the Combat Patrol and a box of Hounds, picked up a space marine codex, and spent endless hours listening to lore and looking at pics galore.
It was at this point I realized there was no 10e codex for space wolves.
How the heck should I proceed? Should I bother building a roster for an army that might become obsoleted?
Since I can't use certain space marine units with space wolves what should I do in lieu of this? How much of a risk is there at units suddenly being axed or even a new champion besides Blackmane being released?
From what I can tell there is no real ETA for release of the codex supplement and this has depressed me. Do I just wait for potentially years to play the faction I want? Do I cave and just play something else (which seems lame).
Need advice and some guidance.

There’ll be an Index on Warhammer Community for Space Wolves, as every army got one. I’ll see if I can grab a link.
Christmas Detachment https://assets.warhammer-community.com/eng_grotmas_detachment_space_wolves_champions_of_fenris_dec2024-tkdtrbhiou-dqvqflllav.pdf
Main Index https://assets.warhammer-community.com/eng_warhammer40000_space_wolves_dec24-yczd5448lp-xdf4fp8o2y.pdf
Christmas Detachment to remain playable whenever your Codex lands
Apologies, linked to the wrong Main Index.

Thank you! Dumb question but do I just assume the units defined in the index thus are still considered in scope for 10e and thus I can purchase and paint?

The Index was done for 10th Ed, so is your building block.

Yes. However, it is possible that some might not make it to the supplement or will be altered when the Space Wolf supplement is eventually released. IIRC, this happened with Blood Angels.
Units that are not primaris marines* (and I think that's basically almost all of the SW special units) are liable to be removed and/or upgraded with the Space Wolf supplement.
As the supplement is likely to appear in not so distant future, at this point it might be safest to purchase and build generic units which reside in Codex Space marines, as those will remain usable and unchanged regardless.
And I think you already know this, but to make this clear, there is not, and there won't be SW codex. In the tenth edition variant chapters operate with codex Space Marines that contains the shared units for all chapters, then in addition there are supplement books, that contain the special bespoke units and detachments of the variant chapters.
(*Newer, somewhat bigger, marine models introduced in the eighth edition.)

That was something I had wondered about frankly. I did see obviously SW shows up in the Codex Astartes but I dont quite understand then how that would play out in practicality, especially since BA etc got a codex.

Right. But indeed it is not actually a codex. What Blood Angels and Dark Angels have is a codex supplement, and they still need codex Space Marines to run their army. And same will be true for Space Wolves once their codex supplement will be released. But meanwhile that PDF index fulfils the role of a codex supplement for them.

I guess the good news is you don’t have a wasted purchase on your hands!
But do pay attention to the first page of the Index, as it has a list of excluded units, which are substituted for Space Woof specific units later in the document,

All Space Marine chapters (who aren't Grey Knights) share a large common list of units.
Specific Chapters, for example SW, add unique units, restrict the use of, or even replace certain units from the generic list with their own special units. As well as adding Chapter specific rules for the army.
So, in order to play SW right now, you need:
Codex: Space Marine - this you have to buy.
and this: https://assets.warhammer-community.com/eng_warhammer40000_space_wolves_dec24-yczd5448lp-xdf4fp8o2y.pdf This PDF is free. It will eventually be removed because...
In the near future (sometime in 2025) you will need the following two books:
Codex: Space Marine
Codex Supplement: Space Wolves This is just like the Supplement you saw for the BA that you mistook as their Codex. It should cost about the same as the BA one.
Yes, GW is charging you more to play SW/ BA/ DA/Black Templars by requiring you to buy 2 books vs just 1.

That is certainly one way to look at it.
Another is that GW is giving you an opportunity to add even more models and options to your faction, making your army one of the four most flexible and prolifically supported armies in the game, providing double or even triple the options available to other armies.
Because I tell ya, if they drop 4-6 Sororitas Order supplements and enough bespoke units for each to justify them, I'm quite likely to buy and enjoy them all, and I'd be happy they existed. I certainly wouldn't feel ripped off if any of my armies were given the Space Marine treatment.
