How do!
It’s a new year, so it’s time for this sort of thread. Question is the title.
And this is an important year for that question, because we know the Warp Spiders have a long overdue facelift and resculpt releasing very soon. So at long last, they’re off the list. How long has it been? When they first came out, my friend and I were in Secondary School. And now, he’s a Grandad. That long.
Which now makes it somewhat trickier for me to pin down what the oldest remaining kit is.
The oldest sprue, to the best of knowledge though, is now the Basilisk cannon. Not the main chassis, that got a redo in the 2000’s. But the Cannon and its mountings are from 2nd Ed. Does that qualify it as the oldest kit? I’m going to argue yes, as that sprue is what makes the Basilisk a Baslisk.
And it’s around 30 years old now. Can anyone better that? What are the five oldest kits now?

Eldar Vypers and the core Falcon chassis are also 2nd ed vets. Not sure if they ever got re-cut, but they are old.

Eldar still take that title I think.
Karandras is probably the oldest model still out there (even though he's on a slight range rotation break, and I expect he's not actually coming back).
The Vyper and the Falcon are also from 1997 I think, so have to be some of the oldest models out there.

Why did I forget about them?
Yeah, they’re definitely 2nd Ed Relics. Can’t recall if they predate the Basilisk though. Certainly they released after the Codex.

Depending on if/when things were recut - basilisk 1996, falcon 1997.

Vyper is apparently March 1997, so the Basilisk Cannon is now the oldest thing still in production.

The Pheonix Lord Asurmen was April 1994 IIRC. (Not sure if that counts as a "kit" though)
I didn't realize the Basalisk was that old. Explains a lot.

Asurmen is getting replaced next month.

ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

I think for the point of this thread we are not including all the previewed Eldar from
https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/gw3wcpc7/world-championships-preview-aeldari-phoenix-lords-step-from-the-webway/
As they would otherwise top the list.

The oldest Tyranid is the Carnifex from 2005
Warriors are technically from 2001 era but have been redone as a kit a few times with new things added.

I was trying to figure out which was oldest kit, the Leman Russ, the Chimera, or the Basilisk (all have been upgraded over time).
And... I made a terrible mistake of whom I requested information from.
What is the oldest kit?
Round 1:
Round 2:
So, yeah, I give up. It's definitely a guard tank though.

Good thing this topics limited to 40k.
Because with Old World GWs producing stuff that's a good decade older.

Late 2nd 40k is roughly on par with 5th WHFB, which is where a lot of the old world stuff is pulling from. They pulling deeper then that? I’d get a little, but a full decade would surprise me.
Honest question. What’s the oldest thing they’ve dusted off for the old world?

Basilisk was definitely out alongside WHFB 4th - the WD with its release was pre-200 in the UK, and my memory tells me 5th ed WHFB was around WD201.

Basilisk launched Feb 1996
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/White_Dwarf_194_(UK)
Chimera launched June 1995
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/White_Dwarf_186_(UK)
Leman Russ launched October 1994
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/White_Dwarf_178_(UK)
I know they did some recutting of the Russ and Chimera, but did they completely redo the sprues? The designs were completely unchanged from the 'clearly 3-uped in plasticard' original models...
Karandras is the oldest model that has a datasheet now though.

I'm pretty sure the track sprues got redone for the Russ and Chimera, at a minimum - I'm less sure on the hulls.

Hobby shop? Luxury! We had to carve our mini out of scrap and deodorant bottles and play on the kitchen table.

To the dubious credit of such ancient models, at least once build the Vyper and Falcon chassis don’t necessarily look their age.
They still need a refresh of course.
