That spear arm looks incredible. The whole model will be quite the painting achievement.

Thanks guys! Tried to mock all partly painted pieces (apart from his hair) to see how things are working together, really pleased, but also scared seeing the amount of unpainted stuff left to do I hope to enter him in a competition towards the end of November (but wont be home to paint for the first two weeks of that month!) which should be just about doable with my pace.

Cheers!

Amazing job on the avatar. I really love the scheme on the reaper as well. If you're doing an army to this standard you deserve a medal - and maybe a trophy

Thanks PaddyMick! I'm aiming to paint a whole army to this standard, but it is likely to take a few more years I hate batch painting and paint slowly so a normal trooper takes a week or two to complete at the moment. Luckily most minis got a refresh so recently that they wont all be legends when I am finished!

Thanks guys for your kind words!

Back into painting properly again and things are progressing pretty quickly (at least for my normal speed). Almost finished the leg armour, but one foot still left to shade, and also need to go back and touch up some over-spills and sort out a few gradients, but planning to assemble most of the mini before touching up small mistakes in one go. Once the armour is done I will go back and finish up the molten body to give it an even look across the whole sculpt as I slightly changed the way I did it along the project, and I think the version on his right thigh (with quite a bit of light 'ashy' areas) is my own favourite. Will mostly do this with a light touch and glazes to even out some harsh transitions.

Started to think about what to do with the base. Was initially thinking about raising him up a bit, but not sure how well it would work to sculpt a good looking lower section of the original slanted ruin base as I want to keep the plastic part with runes that comes with the model. Also looking around to see if I can find something that will look natural on the base that can slightly obscure his ankle where I removed a few flames, as this section does lack the gem placed on the inside close to ground. Not sure if trying to hide that area will just draw more attention to the fact that it is missing?

Cheers,
Oskar

Extremely crisp painting and great shading- rock on!

(I normally don't comment on paintjobs for this figure- his backstory gives me the creeps. But this is really well done. )

Thanks Meer_Cat!

Finally getting close to the finish line, have been playing around with the base, and after first having considered building up a quite tall custom base I decided to stick to the original plastic scenic base for the model, partly because I think it is a quite nice design that suit the mini, and partly because I want this guy finished soon so I can move back to Maugan and his boys.

Head is finished, but still need to sort out the hair before gluing it on. After that final assembly and lots of small patching up of gaps where the sub-assemblies have been glued together and sort out some paint chips here and there.

Cheers,
Oskar

Really good paintjob, like all that shades and bones looks amazing. I have question. You paint soul stones lights and shadow coaxial to their orientation vertically. And IMHO(I'm really not a great painter myself) it's a bit odd when you have highlights on weapon and back piece soul stones oriented in different directions.

My Plog feel free to post your criticism here

I agree that the light reflections in the stones doesn't always work out. I found that I prefer the look of the stones if the light-dark gradient follow along the tallest line in each stone, and sometimes that means I have to put the reflective dot a little illogical compared to other stones, but some of the misalignments are embarrassingly due to the fact that when painting in subassemblies I sometimes forget the angle they will end up in once assembled... I have some examples when I by mistake made them go 180 degrees which was not ideal, but generally it works out close enough

Thanks everyone The Avatar is now more or less finished, I glued him together for a local ’Armies on Parade’ event and took this photo before heading over, he will need a bit of gap filling and touch ups where things have been glued on, but incredibly pleased to have managed to get this project this close to finished!

Thanks Gobert!

Been a bit slow getting back to painting but yesterday I took detailed photos of the last mini I completed before the competition. Now hoping to get back into regular hobbying over the holiday break.

Cheers!

Are you using paint retarders to do gradients?

The contrast, and the color scheme Chefs kiss.

Do you outline the gems before or after painting them?

Thanks everyone for your kind comments, I have been away from the hobby for a break that ended up longer than planned. Hobby fatigue made me take a week away that ended up being 50 days away as I couldn't get back into the right state of mind, but now back again with small sessions most nights. It's weird how hard it can be to get back to something even if it is ultimately my favourite past time! I started out the new year by clearing some back log so found a Striking Scorpion trooper I started 15 months ago, but never finished fully and now hoping to clear some other half finished Aspect Warriors to have a complete Killteam ready. Here he is (to the right) with the other two Scorpions I finished back in 2024. Hoping to have more regular updates agaon Thanks again for your interest!

Some replies to questions below:

Tommygun1918, I use a mix of water and Glaze Medium for most slow blends.

Mothsniper, the gems are always started by painting the whole 'bump' black and then build the gem on top of that, but sometimes I have to go in and correct the outline again (which is terrifying given the thin line). I will try to take some pictures of the whole process next time I do a set of gems and show my method

Cheers,
Oskar

Please do.
Oh, so you do not even bother with the outline from the start. It is the black base that is left after building up the gem.
I was hoping there is easier technique other than masterful freehand. one can dream.
NinjaTurtles Leonardo vibes from these guys, its the blue ribbons Beautiful work, thank you for sharing.
