Subject: Vote for the Dakka Painting Challenge Round 122 April 2025: From the Scrapheap
|
 |
The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar
|
This month the topic was: From the Scrapheap - This could be an old abandoned project, a rescue or a kitbash of oddments. Alternatively, it could be something or someone who's been literally abandoned or forgotten, ancient history or otherwise from the past.
As always, you're free to hand out as many votes as you like, and for any entry you feel deserves recognition, based on anything from technical proficiency or model choice, a neat conversion or a cool take on the theme, or anything else! You're also very welcome to leave some feedback here for the entrants, and many of the images click through to the Dakka gallery if you'd like to give out a vote or two there as well.

Comments for everyone.
Daia T'Nara - I like the model's composition with the refrained base black, measured weathering and bold colored panels. Bonus points for the leopard fur pattern. Overall a great effort, including the base.
halfling84 - The weathering on the buggy looks nice, with interesting surfaces throughout that don't outshine the base color of that area.
ZergSmasher - I like the depth throughout the model and the way the blue and white go together as a result.
blockade23 - Nice, clean look. And it's interesting to see that inverted color scheme on the hover tank. Very striking for Black Templars.
theCrowe - The paintjob has a nice, classic look to it, both with enough commonality to tie them together and spots or color that give the models their individuality.
Zambro - Good balance of functional colors. Just enough to draw the eye without looking garish. That's a good look for scatter terrain.
inmygravenimage - Good work on the (further?) daemonification of the tank. The tongue is a fun little detail and all the pink areas add interest to an otherwise drab model.
Mr Nobody - That's some great OSL and texture on the walls.
JoshInJapan - I like the overall appearance the dark and nicely shaded colors give the model. The fancy pants are a nice touch.
Mon-keigh - That's a good ratio of heraldic colors to functional, industrial ones that give the model a balanced appearance from all angles.
Pariah Press - I love the color selection. Color distribution and weathering are great.
Maharg - I like the clean appearance of the wagon and snotlings, and the striking use of red.
bantha_beast - Good job on varying up the squad with different base colors and color fades. The corrosion is nice as well.
KidCthulhu - It's interesting to see a Plaguebearer that isn't some shade of green but still looks nice and decayed.
Nevelon - Nice variety of dead people that stand out more for their mix of armor and cloth than dead people bits. Fun to see them appear more as shining knights than the more common death and decay theme.
Midget Gems - I like the way the rust goes with the dull blue and how the livelier blue body armor makes the Orks stand out against the tank.
Vejut - Nice work on the halved color scheme and cockpit that sneakily draw attention away from the mismatched parts.
Gulgog TufToof - Good composition on the model that makes it look lively without looking cluttered.
Captain Brown - Compared to the base parts the tower came out pretty neat and organic. Nice job on the texture and depth all over the model.
Pursuit Of Happiness - The marble effect on the wings is just great. The canopy is pretty neat, too.
Dr.Botnik - Nice work on the grimy and rusty metal bits. The blue OSL provides a nice contrast.

No matter how poorly I ended up doing in the votes (I knew this one wasn't going to go very well for me), I still feel great satisfaction at having rescued a model from thick paint hell, and giving it a chance to live its best life as part of my growing Tyranid hive fleet.

Woo, podium Thanks folks! I'm confident GW will pay attention and act accordingly, with 11th edition ushering in the age of kitschhammer.

Thanks. I don't know how much credit I can really take for the composition - the base was decided just by me wanting to tie it to my Tyranid hive and using the same bug and terrain colours, the only choice I really made along the way with regard to balancing colours was to leave the stone decorations on the armour dark, without the light grey highlight I'd usually do. Happy accidents I guess

Wow I was not expecting that result and such a close vote with only a few votes between the top entries, Thank you all so much for the comments and the votes.
Congrats Daia T'Nara, Geifer, Pursuit Of Happiness, Maharg for your podium finishes
I'll try to get the league table updated this weekend, my house extension is nearing the end so still very focused on that at the moment when I'm not away with work or kids football.
