What to do with a dead game?

Hold onto it until I either find someone willing to play it, or someone willing to buy it.

I don’t have dead games, but I have games my children aren't old enough for yet .

I agree on the point that dead games can be better because you are already not part of the culture of "the meta" and so on. By playing an old game you're already cutting out people interested in the hobby of solving the puzzle of how new releases impact an evolving competitive game meta. And look, when I was a youngfella I did my fair share of that, but I'm 40 now and I don't have the interest or time. It's a lot more fun to explore a "finished" game with a friend and make changes where we see fit than wait to see what Daddy Corporation is gonna give us this month.

I realised while posting this that at this point the ONLY "live" game I play is Void Admiral! Hah! I play Big Blue Book LOTR and OPR from before the big 2.5 updates to all the PDFs! In Dungeons and Dragons these days I'm playing a retroclone of Original D&D from 1974 (White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game, check it out) and haven't looked a the new edition at all.

Even my Frostgrave books are an edition out of date. Jeez, that wasn't really even planned, and I do actually get games in, but I seem to be content as a gaming necromancer.

keep them to build, paint (and occasionally play)

they also can give you the opportunity to buy up more stuff on the cheap which is good (although sometimes they become desirable which means i have to live with what I have)

it also means if your a completionism you can (theoretically) get it all in a way you cant for a living game

You mean games I don't play anymore/don't have opponents to play with anymore? I sell them. No matter how little money I get it's still better than owning a thing I have no use for. And (as I sell as auctions, letting the invisible hand of the market decide the price) occassionally I am surprised by how much some people want to buy my stuff for (my crappy balsa wood O&G machines from 6th were one of the best sellers in all of my wargaming career).

I totally get it, I've got a shelf full of “dead” games too. Sometimes I repurpose the minis for other games or painting practice. If they’re just collecting dust, I try local game groups or donate them to schools or clubs where they might get new life.

I don't have much of an issue finding opponents IF I do all the work. By that I mean, having two forces painted up, build the scenario, and make the QRS for the day of the game.

Sometimes, I even just Gamemaster while others play the actual game.

I mean, that is what a non-store based Gaming Group is for.

Having a core group is key I've found. It's worth the effort though. For over a decade we've had a group of 5-10 players interested in this sort of gaming. Once someone is sold on Song of Blades and Heroes and/or Grimdark future, it's not a stretch to get them to try other games, especially if they don't necessarily have to buy more figures to do so.

When a new game can use figures you've already got or requires just a couple new units to add to a new game or just a small warband it's alot easier to get folks to try a new game.

It depends on the game. A lot of them are easy enough to pick up and play as long as you've got pre-built forces that I'll just ask if anyone is interested in breaking out X-Wing or Guild Ball or whatever and we play a round easy enough. Smaller, simpler games definitely work better for stuff like this.

Smaller and simpler for sure. This is one of the benefits of leaning mostly into lighter weight rules. Less brain power required really lowers the mental load of jumping into a new game games like the two I mentioned above really are shockingly easy to jump into, especially for experienced wargamers.

Whenever there's a game I like, I try to make sure I own enough to play a 2 player game, so even if the game is dies, I can still sit down with a friend, teach them the rules, and have a game from time to time.

Indeed, we have a small group that still does a bi-weekly warmachine MKIII game, the biggest problem is time, since most of the players have enough time for 1or 2 games at most so we often take turns.

It does help when you have all the stuff and the other players just have to show up to boot. since we have a regular group sometimes i bring in stuff like DUST 1947 because they enjoy the game without having to do anything else..

The real effort just went into making the original group of like minded players willing to play most any game.

It does help that all of them are pretty salty about current 40K and GW in general, so we have other games to play. battle tech is mostly where everybody went. for their primary game.

It's funny that this popped up because I am planning on chasing down a mass of Heroclix stuff. I have a few people who will play obsolete games but I make sure to only invest in something that I care about.

I never toss out a mini, especially if it's painted (even to my gakky standards). Almost every figure can find another role, even if it's just in an RPG or as part of my great horse of evil. Especially for fantasy and some science fiction figures. Historical are even easier, they're not tied to any game and you never know when you will again play in that era. It also helps that I based all minis I have in the same way, so i don't have to revise or the like.

Rules I also tend to keep. I have a ton of books and a few rulebooks don't really cause any issues there. And I can always end up playing the game again with someone, particularly with my partner.

I still have a bunch of Heroclix that I have rebased and use for superhero rpgs.

My brother has a lot of Mageknight minis he has rebased and used in DnD campaigns as well as as his warband in Frostgrave.

I'm back!

I'm sorry, I don't understand the reference.
