How do!

Pretty sure we’ve had a similar thread in the dim and distant, but it’s been yonks and so I figured a new one will work.

And this isn’t about sloping off for a lunchtime beer, or even glorifying drinking in a mindless laddish way. Rather, it’s for making recommendations for those of us that partake where a given brew is A Bit Different.

On my recent travels (literal) I’ve a few I can recommend off the bat.

Fierce, Iron Brew

Discovered on Rose Street, Edinburgh. Oh my word is this is a dangerous beer. A respectable, easy drinking 4.3% ABV. But that’s not where the danger lies. Oh no. For this isn’t merely a beer with a hint of Irn Bru. This is Irn Bru with a hint of beer. As a born and bred and dyed in the tartan Scot? This is something I shouldn’t be allowed access to more than a can or two at a time. Because it’s so Irn Bru, I could easily forget I’ve been drinking.

Absolutely wonderful stuff. If you’d like to try this, it can be bought direct from Fierce Brewery. Not sure on sharing booze links, so I shan’t post one.

Brew York, It’s Showtime

The first of two I only bought because Pop Culture and the can. Because it’s Beetlejuice inspired, innit. Bit heavy at 6.0%, which for me puts it into ‘definite occasional treat’ territory. But the flavour is really good. Can describes it as Red Grape and Raspberry Pastry Sour. Sounds minging, but it isn’t. For my fellow Brits, I’d described it as have a mouthful of a sharp white wine, and a bite of Bakewell Tart. A very fine, polished balance of sweet and tart (very almost sour).

This is a can to be savoured. Certainly it’s not a Session Beer, especially at 6.0% ABV. If you’ve a friend that’s mostly into wine? This might prove a winner at your barbecue.

Brew York, Only Noodles Michael. Yes it’s another Pop Culture inspired brew, this time by The Lost Boys. And again Bought For The Can.

ABV is 4.5%, so for me starts to fall in to the Session level. But my word it’s tart, being flavoured with White Grape and Sharp Lime. Like it’s Caskmate It’s Showtime, not something I’d drink all night. But it is a decent pint, and nicely different to most on the market. Ideal if you fancy a post-work, feet up, watch a movie beer.

Badger, Cranbourne Poacher

Bottled beer, a hefty 5.7% ABV. But what a lovely tipple. It’s a Ruby, so more Malt than Hops - but with added Damsons. Malty on the swig, slightly sweet on the swallow.

Again, not something I think I could Session. But like Only Noodles, Michael, not a bad “just the one or two” beer. Lovely stuff.

Can be easily bought in the UK from larger Sainsbury’s stores. You can also get a 12 bottle crate direct from Badger Brewery.

I've yet to have a bad pint from Brew York - and my brother lives in York so I've had a few! Their Tonkoko Milk Stout is possibly my favourite beer.

I’m definitely a developing fan!

The place I got it from (Left Field Beers) has others. But right now, I’m a bit too squiffy due to sampling to be trusted to place an order.

But I shall! In due course.

Certainly a country mile ahead of most American Beers I’ve sampled.

Which isn’t a slight, just that I grew up on British Beers, and there is a difference.

Hobgoblin Dark Stout 4.1% ABV

It’s alright. Tastier than Guinness, but I still prefer the original Grobi.

St Peter’s Cream Stout 6.5% ABV

Oh what a glorious stout! It’s got flavour, it’s got character. But man, that ABV is to be respected. This would go very well in a beef stew, I reckon. It’s got that umami I’d normally associate with Worcester Sauce. And being a stout, is very very malty. Lovely stuff. But definitely not more than just the one, Mrs Wembley.

Pigswill. Yuck. Never again. Remainder of bottle going down the sink.

I misread the title as "A Crafty Pun" and was quite let down by the actual thread.

Was it the basic ale? I've always found that a bit hit & miss - the bitter & Riggwelter are generally OK (they also had a really good brewery tour!).
