After Hero Quest, the grenadier barbarians were my next hobby steps. Obviously under the influence of the Conan films. Still have them, and added to them substantially an adult, thanks to the moulds surviving Grenadier.

My first after coming back was AoBR.
But the really first I got was this, The Citadel Dungeon Adventurer Starter Set:
The Citadel Dungeon Adventurer Starter Set
It was to go with the D&D 2nd ed Basic set, and GW's cardboard Dungeon Floor Plans sets.

My brother and I first started with Hero Quest and Space Crusade. We started WHFB in 3rd edition - I started with dwarfs, and I think my first purchases would have just been some generic dwarf warrior blister packs. I think the first big box we got was the 4th edition starter set, with high elves vs goblins.

My first minis were pewter figurines from Rawcliff Pewter. Meant to sit on shelves & look cool, not for gaming.
First gaming minis were Hero Quest. I painted the heroes with enamels from Testors, straight on, no primer. I did model cars & military aircraft before that, but I didn't know about primers.
Then it was Battlemasters.
A friend had siblings that could drive, and he got random stuff for us to pool together & use. Tyranid Attack, Mighty Warriors, and a box of RTB01 that we split.
My first kit bash was an RTB01 marine with one of the reaper skeletons from HQ. basically split both vertically & mashed together.

The 40k second edition starter box. I deeply regret trading it all away many years ago for some LOTR models. I spent many hours reading all the little lore blurbs in the rule book and codex. Painted all the space Marines and Orks but only ever got through half the gretchin...

The kit that got me back in the hobby wasn't exactly a model kit, but was the old Bandai Mega Armor Zero kit from the Mega Man X series. It's a hybrid model kit/action figure. I quickly got back into my old hobby of gunpla after that and haven't looked back.
My first Warhammer kit was actually a scenery kit that I used for a Gundam diorama. I for the life of me can't remember what it was called, but it's the first image in my thread in my signature. My first kit proper was the Warhammer Fantasy Battles Chaos Warriors kit.
UPDATE: The terrain kit was the Azyrite Ruins.

1990 and first year of high school and it was a clear plastic box of a unit of 10 metal space marines for Rogue Trader.
I cannot find a picture online.
Painted them as Blood Angels (poorly).

First kit/box in the hobby of mini gaming, or in GW games specifically?
My first box of minis was the old PlasTech box for BattleTech.
My first GW mini was one of the Skaven Jezzails with the ridiculously long rifle. I thought it was so hilarious I had to buy it.

My first box was the Eldar Guardians box from 3rd Edition.
My friend had bought the Orks and Space Marines from the second edition starter set of another lad at school as well as a box of the 3rd Edition Ork boyz and naturally, as I was around 9 or 10 years old, I wanted to get some of these cool little model soldiers like he had.
The only place that sold Warhammer locally was a small toy shop that had a couple of shelves of Warhammer stuff. So between the limited choice and wanting a different army to what my friend had, I ended up picking the Guardians without knowing anything about Eldar. Still have those models as well.

For me it was one of the older IG Sentinel kits and the IG combat patrol (the one with a Leman Russ,Chimera and some Infantry). But the Sentinel was what sold me to start into the hobby and remains one of my favourite kits.

First kit my parents ever bought for me and my brother. Circa 1994-1997?
We lived in Hawaii and while my dad was buying a bag of napoleonic miniatures he asked my brother and I if we wanted anything. He probably wanted us to pick another bag of napoleonic miniatures so he could buy them, but instead I picked the orc and my brother picked the human. No clue what game they go with or who makes them. My dad painted them for us and then a couple years later my parents bought my brother and I the Warhammer starter set - I believe it was 5th edition. And now 25+ years later I still collect miniatures.
*edit it was 6th edition.*

For 40k it might have been the 2nd ed starter box, although I might have painted my friends Terminators before that. Probably the first model I bought explicitly was the Ultramarine Boxnaught.
For the larger wargaming hobby it was definitely the Battletech Compendium, followed by an Inner Sphere "Heavy Lance" (?) Box. Whichever set had the Marauder . . . Aka "Officer's Battle Pod" from Robotech.

HeroQuest, too!
Great set to paint. Models were simple but functional. You could also paint the terrain, if you really wanted to. You ended up with a few extra rats and skulls you could use for basing. The yellow mage was a pain.
Still haven't painted the gargoyle yet and have a second, UK set that hasn't been painted.

My first ever actual mini was bought from Boots the Chemist (I know, weird right) around 1985 ish. It was LE9 - Space Skeleton and I remember it cost 65p!!! How things have changed, lol. At the same time I also bought some Slann which according to SOL were C32 and 40p each.
I didn't paint them but I did play with them a lot, but more like tiny action figures, gaming with them never crossed my mind (I was 12 and there was no internet... I had no idea what they were actually for).
That all changed when I discovered the Citadel Journal (I hadn't heard of White Dwarf at that point). That then led to White Dwarf and then I attended my first ever Games Day, which was held at the Royal Horticultural Hall. I traveled from Kent to London with my best friend from school and my parents had allowed me to take £50 with me which back then was a huge amount of money.
But, I had travelled specifically for the launch of some new game called Rogue Trader.......
I remember buying the rulebook, a box of plastic space marines (RTB01) and a box of metal Space Orks. Spent the day looking at amazing tables with vehicles made out of old Zoid toys and yoghurt pots for terrain.... It was amazing.
I have never looked back.
All because GW somehow persuaded a chemist in a shopping centre to put a John Blanche diorama of skeletons sieging a castle in their window and to have a single spinner rack of blister packs.
Well played GW, well played. I have been poor for life from that point on.

And speaking of Orcs, here's the first mini I painted, and a more recent one:
For any young readers, those are from HeroQuest. I got the 2nd edition 40K starter a couple years later. And then I think my first proper army started with a box of Tallarn Desert Raiders.

First mini boxed set was a Grenadier Advanced Dungeons and Dragons set but I don't recall which one. I think it was just called Adventurers. Edit: It was Adventuring Party.
The first GW boxed set was the first GW Warhammer box of plastic minis. I think it had ten minis of each faction (Skaven, Orcs, Dark Elves, Elves, Dwarves, and Goblins). I split the box with three friends.
The first GW boxed set that I bought completely for myself was the plastic Skeleton Horde (red) box. It has 24 skeletons and I still haven't built them.
