Starting to build a HH army or two for the first time - and given how much of a pain these things are to build, how large my backog is and my limited time, I'm wondering if there's a real overall player/gameplay preference for open or closed?
Generally speaking, I'd prefer to build them closed, as they look pretty cool and would be easier to paint & store.
Just seeing what (if any) general consensus is out there before I press the button to order a few so I know what to get.

For 1.0 or earlier editions theres nothing stipulating open or closed.
Declare the doors to be open ground of you do leave them open?

I magnetized all my doors.
So open or closed, I'm good.

Yup, I'm either going to have them closed and skip all of the interior and moving doors or use the always-open versions. Hence the question.

Do them closed so you can use the internals for bits.

3rd Ed rules dictate open, with the petals being ignored for targeting and measuring.

Dunno if that helps any. And whilst I doubt many would be all that bothered if you modelled doors closed, but sadly one must always spare some thought for TFG.

If you ignore the doors, does it matter any if they're open or closed?

That I’m not sure. Haven’t read the LoS rules just yet.

I’ll also re-read the reactive door rule, as it may stipulate that if the landing zone doesn’t allow the doors to be fully opened, bad things.

I would say the last part is probably the most important one, yeah, if there's rules stating that if it doesn't fits it doesn't sits

Hmmmm.

So…kinda.

Between the three rules, having the doors open interacts with “no close than 1” to an enemy unit”. But open or closed doesn’t affect LoS, as being a vehicle, you can never draw LoS across/through a Drop Pod.

So…best to model the doors as openable, so you can accurately resolve the deep strike.

Once done? You can ultimately freely close them if it tidies up your battlefield, as they’re ignored once the troops have disembarked.

I’ll grant this could do with an FAQ as to whether the petals are counted solely during deployment. And whilst I don’t think they are, it’s very much a TFG issue, and we all like to avoid those, yeah?

TFG here being the sort of opponent who’ll dispute things for the sake of disputing them, if they think it’ll gain them an advantage.

I guess it's about fitting them/the petals in properly in regard to buildings and terrain and each other and whatnot - I can imagine some TFG of the other extreme stacking pods in a tight cluster to fit more disembarkers in as small a space as possible.

Hmm... fair enough, yeah. It should probably get a bit of a clarification afterwards I'd say. Personally? I'd kind of be inclined to say they should be open because they are deployed, and be handled like terrain, but...

Surely the most TFG RAW thing would be to place the hull at 1" from your models (ignoring the petals) and then smashing the doors into your models.

Indeed. Or pack the Drop Pods in impossibly tight to the board edge or Impassable Terrain.

I'd probably go with the permanently opened ones if I was starting now, just cuz they are much, much cheaper (you get 2 in the box). Shouldn't be that hard to add a Storm Bolter in there somehow..

But since I already got 2 pods, one regular and one Deathstorm, I'll keep on buying the now HH-branded ones for consistency.. Or, OTOH, might look cooler to have "variant" pods.. just like I mix Deimos Rhino & 40K Rhino chassis's for variety in my ground vehicles yknow..

Just go with the one you like the look of more?

Can you use the 40k ones in HH?

If they’re the same dimensions, I wouldn’t have a problem.

40K pod doors are slightly less long, so theoretically a TFG could fit them a bit closer to each other when deploying. So could be an issue for tourney play, but that depends on the HH rules getting FAQ'd, as explained above..

Should be fine for casual games? You might need to WYSIWYG the storm bolter in though..

Model them appropriately hinged. They look better on the table when open, and pack better for travel when closed. The hinges are occasionally handy when dealing with hillsides or other terrain too.
