A boarding action could probably take years to complete. Hell the boarding party might fly off with the ship while there's still fighting in the lower decks.

It would be very grimdark for a ship to have an ongoing stalemate on a few decks. Just a smoldering ongoing war. Like an independent city state or revolutionary fight.

Edit:

It might be like the age of sail. Don't attack the gun decks, just secure the exits. Once the wheel and sails are taken the ship is pretty much yours. Once the bridge and enginerium is taken best to surrender while you have life support.

^That is an absolutely rad concept. Love it. A few adjustmentsand you could make it generational. Warp drive impossible, distributed agri-units or sections providing constant food supply, Recyclers still functioning, etc. Just adrift and evolving over decades/centuries.

That may simply be life aboard ship. Crews are described as generational, with the children being educated, trained and then assigned.

As lives in the Imperium go, despite the size of Imperial Crews? It may actually be quite a nice life as such things go. OK, you’re probably in more danger and more often than a Hive Dweller. But you’re going to be fed, have assigned quarters, maintained uniforms/work clothes and so on.

Seems something in the size range of a Mars Class has around 107,000 crew. Which is more than the estimate for the town I live in. But by Imperial standards? Kind of a village sized populace. So perhaps we might expect quite a close knit community?

A ship is just like a city, take the control zones and then mop up the rest later.
