I'm saying you don't really have to get that creative to use old models. Just because GW took away Grotznik's rules doesn't mean he's not a perfectly fine git to throw on a table with a nominal effort to find a profile that fits. Sure, someone might raise an eyebrow if you call him a Stormboy, but there's dozens of places you can field him where no one will bat an eye. More likely than not if they even notice, they'll be excited to see a classic sculpt hit the table.

Either display pieces if I'm particularly attached to them but can't find a suitable proxy for them, proxy them as something similar, or they become kitbash fodder

I only play with close friends so I usually just use them as something else. I have a pair of old Griffons that I use as the new Field Ordnance Guns for IG. I just don’t use the Heavy Bolter mounted to the hull. Almost all of my guard are 2nd or 3rd Ed so I just proxy as needed.

Odd, I have Dark Eldar Warriors with pistols/CCW that aren't supported. I have Commissars with illegal weapons combos. Wolf Scout with meltagun? LOL

Thanks for pointing out missing options! I went ahead and added the Wolf Scout special weapons. I couldn't figure out what weapons you are missing for Commissars or where DE Warriors with CCW and pistols ever showed up in the rules. PM me if you like.

Sorry, is this meant for me? Unless you are referencing as specific rule that this model had and that you can't find a suitable replacement for, every (Lord) Commissar has full access to the Guard's armory, which includes - among 24 other ranged and melee weapons - Las pistols.
