How do!
Do you like Oldhammer? Do you like Chaos models? Do you like Liver? Do you have either or both of Realm of Chaos books? Do you like watching C-Beams glitter in the dark near Tannhäuser Gate? Are you looking for a 2026 side project?
If you answered yes to all of those? I have a proposal for you.
The new AoS Nurgle models have seriously bowled me over. I know AoS’ wider style isn’t for everyone. But these lads, and honestly a lot of AoS Chaos Models, have really tapped into the evocative art and style of Realm of Chaos. So much so that, whilst not right away? I am keen to get a small collection, basing it off the army selection process found in Realm of Chaos, Lost and the Damned.
And I’m putting an open invite out to anyone who might like to join me in that endeavour.
Given that era’s army tended toward being super small? Even in today’s prices such a project should fit many budgets. Especially if we agree say, One Unit Or Big Model a Month.
Conversions and proxies are of course allowed. This is An Oldhammer Project. And so it is the mend, make do, bodge and bettering ethos that should be a core part of it. Because this is a showcase type project. Not something you or I will ever necessarily get a game in with. Just a fun side project and an excuse to flex the hobby muscles for the delectation of the audience here present, and maybe even sharpen some up.
Ideally One For Each God, but I don’t want to be so stringent, nor limit the number of participants. Nor do I otherwise want to apply rules to it. If you’re a jammy sod and have models from that era? Use them! If you want to move at a faster or slower pace? Do so!
So let me know if there’s any interest, and what sort of points level you think would be commonly achievable. I want people to commit to a bit of hobby fun, not a hobby grind.

Well, one of my Oathmark projects is somewhat a mono-nurgle army exactly like this. But it's still in the "planning and putting discount boxes on the pile"-stage.
However, it'll feature Rotswords, Blightkings, Plague Monks, The Hobbit-Goblins, Pestigors, Darkwater stuff, possibly plague ogres, river trolls and other stuff from various producers.
Ask me in about three years from now about the progress.

Urgh... I've still got my 1990s Slaves To Darkness book just sitting there, taunting me... I want to, I really want to. Damn you Doc, you're rocking some Champion-of-Slaanesh levels of alluring there. I just can't commit to any more painting projects though, with my once-every-couple-of-weeks hobbying motivation at the moment...

The last batch of marauders really tempted me, but I’ve got enough irons in the fire right now.
Tempting though. I don’t have the real old books, but did have a chaos army back in 5th/6th WHFB.

Just realized I have 30 Horus Heresy marines I have very little use for (MKII / MKIII). I could use them as a basis for my Tzeentch aligned CSM Warband. I always aim for that Rogue Trader flair in my projects, so RoC books are an obvious inspiration for this ragtag bunch.
In addition to 30 HH marines, I have Tzaangors, KT21 Beastmen team, and all the Ashes Of Faith cultists/mutants, plus all Chaos models from BSF. Oh, and also 20 Mechanicum thralls. Everything still on sprue. Should give ample backbone to start with. Only challenge will be the sheer number of conversions/kitbashes I had in mind.. since I wasnt thinking of using any of it as "stock" builds, but rather to bash it all against each other, and see what sort of cyber-mutant beasties might ensue.. Maybe add GSC Aberrants into the mix for some bigger torsos..
Would such a thing qualify?

As long as it’s selected via the RoC book? Sure!
It’s meant as a general hobby challenge and fun side project. Hence I don’t want to apply too many rules.
For instance? Greater Daemons. I don’t have any of the original ones, and am not inclined to hunt down complete, second hand ones. So if I wanted to add a Great Daemon? I’d use the modern ones. But the next person may want to use the originals, or the ones that came after.
The exact scale of a given model isn’t of massive concern, as we’re not likely to play against each other.

Sure. The books are the main thing here
I’ll be using it as an excuse to collect a very restrained army. Likely less than two dozen models, as was the style at the time. And because it’s that much smaller? I intend to push my painting to my current competence limit and ideally beyond. And of course potentially indulge in some kit bashing and converting.

For years I have foolishly entertained thoughts that I would run an old-school RoC warband campaign (fantasy, probably, because of the minis I still have, but a 40K Sensei warband is so tempting) to relive the good ol' days. Hasn't happened yet. I look forward to seeing what you all come up with.

I still have a lot of Oldhammer Chaos models. It would be a fun project to build a little warband using all the random tables. Will there be a shared thread, like the Dakka Monthly Challenge or LoER?

I’ve gotten you into a pretty interesting slice of Hobby!
Feel free to spread the concept far and wide. I know we’re not the only Colony of sad old gits Oldhammer fans, and not for entirely ego reasons? I’d love to see lots of people having a crack at it.
And yes, it will include Make Yer Own God Warbands. Because that’s part of Realm of Chaos, and so is well within scope.

Been reading some more LOTD, and would like some clarification.
The book mentions Warbands, Renegades and Cults, among other things. Are these all viable choices? So I could make a Champion with warband, a Champion with Renegades, or a Magus with an Acolyte, Coven + cult? So at least 3 different ways to build a "faction"?
I am getting flooded by the sheer amount of choices I could make.. a far cry from modern CSM hehehe!

WFB style Warband? LATD book, pp. 47 (Havent read RoC - STD yet since I'm into Tzeentch myself)
I am not sure if I'd need to read "Slaves To Darkness" before reading LATD tho. The rules are sort of all over the place, as was typical for the era (suspecting all the books were just copypastes from WD articles, which would explain it)

After a brief flip through of both books, LaTD seems to have pretty much everything you need to build a warband of any flavor, thanks to all the summary charts in the back. Slaves To Darkness does have the full text for all the mutations, so if you're planning to play with WHFB rules of that vintage, you'll want refer to those pages.

Ok, this is good info. My RT bible project is in hiatus ATM, but when I resume it, I will certainly compile those mutations with the LaTD charts Automatically Appended Next Post: Those new Tzeetch Silver Towers revealed in today's stream will make sweet Monoliths for my warband. That's going to be the first new kit I'm going to source for this project.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |
