The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar

Upstate, New York

This topic this month was the Shiny New Toy - something fresh from under the Christmas tree? Ork boss with a swanky new boomdakka? Tanks rolling fresh off the assembly line? New captives for the dark gods or archon? Parade ready fresh recruits? Your entry should be something new. Or shiny. Polished chrome and steel. Or a toy. As always you can let the topic be your muse and take it away, but make sure the results tie back to the theme.

As always, you're free to hand out as many votes as you like, and for any entry you feel deserves recognition, based on anything from technical proficiency or model choice, a neat conversion or a cool take on the theme, or anything else! You're also very welcome to leave some feedback here for the entrants, and many of the images click through to the Dakka gallery if you'd like to give out a vote or two there as well. Images in the Dakka gallery are less compressed then the ones in the vote thread, so can get you a better look at details.

Great work indeed.

tzurk
Good job on the details and the base is epic. I especially like the yellow plasma, Lord Inquisitor Hesh is welcomed in my (inquisition guard), we use yellow plasma too
KidCthulhu
Solid work as usual. Fun bunch.
Daia T'Nara
Awesome base, and a disgusting color scheme.
inmygravenimage
I like abstract painting scheme for these, as if the flesh is melting, kind of cool. This just gave me an idea to try something similar.
Zambro
Very crispy paint job, I like the rendering style on the robe. Also good call on the limited color palette.
Captain Brown
Clean paint job, sir, nicely done!
Mon-keigh
Good job on the base. Silver creates good contrast with the ground, looks good, solid work man!
JoshInJapan
Quality work as usual!
Pariah Press
Love the gradients and the details. Superb work!
How did you do that banner?
Geifer
Very adorable.
Nice detail on the fur, are those from reaper?
Sir, respect for getting it done. I dropped out for 2 years and couldn't get anything done in that time, hope you feel better.
Jadenim
Love to see washes and limited palette used to great effect. Awesome work!
Gulgog TufToof
Suffer not! indeed!
Solid work man. I like to see Pious Vorne color scheme variations. And props for a cool base, did you mold that?
Vejut
Eyecandy man, love the gradients and the color scheme. You have a good eye for that.
Nevelon
Simple but effective. Base is Awesome!
What did you use for the green blade? That is a cool effect.
theCrowe
YES! Love those guys. Different colors works well for them. I have 3rd and 4th, but not the others.
JordySteve
Clean paint job, love the base.
What did you use for the blue armor?
Piousservant
Crispy paint job, reads well, solid work.
Midget Gems
Good call on white armor it looks good, and quality weathering.
Maharg
Very nice man.
How did you do the thin double lines on the cuffs? Is that a pin-wash or freehand?
jseverin
Solid work. Is the pink plasma glow florescent paints?

Thanks for the kind words Mothsniper, your version of Pious was actually what inspired me to go out and buy one and provided the motivation to put paint to her as well.

The base is just plasticard; cut out a circle, gouge some grooves into it to delineate the different tiles, chisel out the center square, then put it back in. Paint the tiles to look like marble images I found online then paint the center to look like brass.

Thanks Mothsniper! Loved the Gyrocopters, mist coming out the bottom looked great. There is flourescent pink in there, white in the cracks a bit, and a darker red along the top.

Glad to hear it! That is what we do here man.
Daaang, you made it piece by piece. I was thinking it was a stamp in putty or repurposed texture from somewhere. Hey, an epic model needs proportionate base.

More experimentation is needed, but i think a bent clear tube with strategically placed cotton tufts might be the best way to mouth flyers. I still think I used too much cotton, so if there is just barely enough cotton pieces to just obscure the "glaring clear tube" enough, it might look like its floating.

Nice, Yes, pink plasma glows, looks cool!.
The more I use florescent green the more I want to use it. It just gives that extra saturation, even beyond the inks. Pink must be the same.

Got some blue but it is harder to use and i can't get the glow effect with it.

How did you do that banner?

Thanks!

I scanned the banner out of a book ('Eavy Metal Warhammer 40,000 Painting Guide), printed it out, glued it onto a piece of thick foil from a liquor bottle, and then painted over it to improve the saturation and contrast. It ended up having too many layers, so it didn't bend and flow very well, but next time I'll know how to do it better.
