Hey friends! Here, I'll be dropping some pics of my entries for the "1 Million Miniatures" challenge from GW (2025/2026), as I don't really have another thread to put this hodge-podge of different models. I initially pledged to paint 25 models, but as I am nearing that goal, I've decided to push myself and see if I can reach 50 till the end of May. While my cynical side knows all of this is just a marketing ploy by GW to sell us more plastic crack we don't need, I'll try to circumvent that pitfall by actually working on the backlog of old minis I already own. Ha, take that, marketing people!

Anyways, let's take a look at some pictures now. My first entries were these 5 pieces of the Aquila lander from the Battle for Macragge starter set from 2004:

Spoiler containing individual shots of the terrain pieces:

Spoiler:

These counted as my first 5 entries for the challenge.

Next, miniatures 6 - 13. I had one old, converted metal Space Marine I decided to paint as an Ultramarine Captain. I also had these magnetized Catachan figures counting as Orlock gangers which added those to the mix. Here's the finished result:

Evening, nice paint job on the marines and terrain. I like the idea and colour scheme on the catachan squad, it looks like a scout training squad! What’s the base model and bits for the captain, it’s a nice conversion and I’m wracking my head as to who/what he is built from…?

Hey JordySteve, thanks a lot for your comment! The Catachans are supposed to represent Orlock Gangers on the table, that's why I tried to give them a colour scheme reminiscent of the classic metal minis with more blue, black, red and white. But now that you mention it, using Catachan models as SM scouts is actually a very interesting idea
Regarding the Ultramarine Captain: it's a model I got from a used lot, so I'm not exactly sure about the provenance of all parts. What I do know is that the base model used to be an old 2nd or 3rd edition metal Standard bearer for the Space Marine Company Command squad. The original owner seems to have cut off the banner pole and instead equipped the model with a plastic gladius from some other kit. Unfortunately, I have no clue where that part came from. I liked the conversion a lot and decided to repaint it and give it a bit of a glow-up to honour the cool conversion idea

That is definitely the 3rd ed command squad ancient with a hand swap. Rest of the mini looks stock. I’ve got him on my shelf.

There are so many power swords out there I could not place where it came from.

Nice work!

Thanks for your kind words and insight, Nevelon! Looking further into it, the sword seems similar to some of the Space Wolves power blades. However, I couldn't find one that exactly matches this piece, so it's still a mystery to me. Might even be a 3rd party bit, who knows Still, the use of the skull motif does heavily suggest the 40k setting IMO.

Thanks a lot for the encouragement, aku-chan! See below for further progress!

Thank you all for your feedback and comments on my challenge entries, I appreciate every single one of them very much Now, I got some more stuff to show you. Here's where miniatures 14 - 19 started out:

And this is them finished:

I'm really happy with how they turned out. These came from a Combat Parol box (the older one with the Dreadknight) and they were super fun to paint. The scheme is simple yet effective, and it really pays off IMO. Also, I love that you can pretty quickly churn out an army because the Grey Knights don't need a lot of models at all. This is great for someone like me who doesn't have that much time to paint. I usually never manage to finish anything before the rules change, and so I never get to play much. Grey Knights give me some hope that I can finally do that. I enjoyed painting these so much that I ordered some more minis off of ebay. They will allow me to field the new Combat Patrol (with a Venerable Dreadnought and Castellan Crowe in it) as well. I'm excited for that. In the mean time, I started working on the next batch of miniatures: Some Grey Knights Terminators and the Librarian leading them. This is how they started out:

I am currently in the process of finishing them up and will post pictures of the finished products soon, so if you are interested, stay tuned for more! Until then, thank you all very much for looking, and once again for your comments and encouragment, it is greatly appreciated Catch you later friends

I absolutely ADORE your Orlocks. You were really creative in posing the Catachans naturally, and the Chimera tanker guy with the sunglasses takes the cake. I love how you used the curved bolter mags and filed away the lasgun barrels to look more like autoguns. They have a lot of charm, and as someone who has done it as well, scout shotguns fit excellently on Catachan arms. Calgar Jr. is looking nice as well. You've really outdone yourself on these boys, and I'm excited to see what comes next!

Hey bulli, thank you very much for your kind words! Glad you like the poses, I try to mess around and dry fit a lot before glueing to make sure I get at least a half decent pose, though these Catachans can be a bit challenging. And props for spotting the alterations to the Autoguns! I'm afraid I noticed too late that they barely show in the picture. If you liked the previous GK squad, scroll down for more!

Thanks a lot for the compliment Tommygun! The GW metallic paints do come out really nicely. All I did was an Ironbreaker basecoat, followed by a black wash and then a final highlight with Runefang Steel. The paint picked up the detail wonderfully and I'm once again amazed by how easily you can get good results with them

Alright, time for an update! My Terminator Squad plus Librarian are now finished, and it's time to share the final results with you! Let's get right to it:

I've put detailed images of each mini in the spoiler tags for you once again:
Spoiler:

And that takes me to precisely 25 minis! So the first challenge reward level is already secured. Time to tackle 50 now! Here's my next entries, a bit of a mish-mash of models I still had in my backlog which haven't ben started yet:

And since I have a lot more of painting to do still, I think I'll leave you with that for now I'll update as soon as I've made some more progress. Until then, thanks for checking this out! I hope you will stay tuned for more, and I'd love it if you let me know your thoughts. Catch you later friends!

It's really nice seeing more well-painted Grey Knights, and I really like that Librarian. Just a simple headswap and paintjob can make it look like an entirely new model. (and good thinking changing the staff for the Nemesis blade)

Excited to see that smattering of inquisition guys painted (and their cute little heretical pet). They look like the beginnings of an RPG party...

And man, oh man is that Nid-hunting Guardsman sweet.

Man, bulli, I really appreciate you. You have a great eye for detail and always notice the subtle changes I make on my miniatures, like the head- and weapon swap. It's very nice to see some people still enjoy this kind of stuff in an age of monopose minis, so thank you very much for that

Happy to hear you also seem to enjoy Inquisition stuff. I have a little thread dedicated to that (there's not much on there for now, but the project is still ongoing), so you may wanna check that out too Also, you're absolutely right, the different characters would make a pretty awesome RPG party with how diverse they are, that is something that's very cool about Inquisitior and what drew me into the setting. You can realyl get creative with bitz and paintjobs here, so that's pretty awesome.

See below for pictures of the finished results, my friend

Welcome back lovely people!
Regarding my Grey Knights... I may have ordered some more Dreadnoughts for my collection Not because I need them, but simply because I lack impulse control Well, I sort of wanted some of the other weapon options, so I looked on ebay and found some interesting offers. I ended up buying one old "Rifleman" dread (that's the one with twin autocannons on both arms, something that's no longer rules-legal but still looks cool as heck) and a classic Forge World Dreadnought with mostly intact FW loadout. I will post these eventually when I start working on them in earnest.

But of course, we're here because more progress has been made for the challenge. Here's miniatures 26 - 32 completed:

Once again, I've put shots of the individual minis in spoiler tags for you:

Spoiler:

Grey Knight Terminator Apothecary:

Autosavant:

Xeno Trophy Hunter:

Death World Veteran Agent / Gland Warrior:

Pistoleer Agent:

Oldschool Beakie Ultramarine:

Chaos Familiar:

Moving on to the next batch of models, nr. 33 - 36:

Here we have an older Interrogator/Inquisitor metal model, a custom built Inquisitior in stasis chair (reminiscent of Gideon Ravenor, from the highly recommended "Ravenor" novel series by Dan Abnett), and two Inquisitorial Crusaders. I've already started working on them, so stay tuned for further updates! Thank you all so much for looking, commenting and keeping me motivated! See you soon

Love how you’ve embraced the marketing and balked at it all at the same time! Great variety of minis to clear out your backlog. The grey knights and the Aquila lander are amazing. The glass on the lander is spot on and the whole thing is. Was the Ultramarine also from the box set?

Thank you very much gobert! Considering I was able to find about 50 minis still awaiting a paintjob, I'm glad I managed to restrain myself in that regard. I'll certainly find an excuse to buy more minis (and I admittedly also purchased three dreadnoughts and a strike squad off of ebay), but GW will have to wait a little for my money I'm afraid
I'm glad to hear you like what I've finished so far, and on that note, thank you very much for taking the time and going over the whole blog! Regarding the Ultramarine (I presume you mean the recent Beakie?), it was indeed at least partially made from bits I received in the Battle for Macragge box, such as the 2nd edition boltgun, the arms, the backpack and the legs. The remaining bits, i.e. the head, torso, shoulder pads, knife and accessories I was able to source from my existing bitz box. In case you meant the Ultramarine Captain with power sword, this mini did not come from the Macragge box, but was instead acquired from a previous used lot where I bought a large Salamanders army for a reasonable price. Thanks for checking this out and commenting gobert!

I'm back with a quick update once again! I managed to finish minis 33 - 36, take a look:

Very happy with how theses Inq28 minis came out, they really scratch that special itch I have for the darker/more mysterious side of this universe. I'm very tempted to buy another Inquisitorial Agents Killteam box to allow me to build the remaining Agents I don't have, but we'll see. As per ususal, I have put the detail shots in spoiler tags.

Spoiler:

Inquisitor in stasis chair w/psilencer (still need to come up with a name)

Inquisitor w/Boltgun

Inquisitorial Crusaders:

Hope you like them! And here's what I'm working on next, a quick batch of Imperial Guardsmen. nrs. 37 - 40:

I don't really need these, but they help me fill out the numbers to get me closer to my goal of 50 models. They have, however, given me a chance to experiment a bit, and I'm trying my hand at some camouflage on these guys to see if I can pull it off. It's an exciting little experiment, and the jury is still out on whether I like where they are going. You'll see soon, I'll show you when they are done

Thank you all for checking this out and commenting, and please stay tuned for more! Catch ya later!

Hey Feisty, by ultramarine, I meant the marine in the final spoilered Aquila Lander picture. Beaky is also cool… as all beaky marines are!

Love the Crusaders, such cool concept and excellently painted. They’d make for a great Kill Team I reckon. Also love how you mixed a Dreadnought sarcophagus with a Necron Destroyer

Hey gobert, thanks for your reply and compliments! Oh, right, that Ultramarine! He was actually a mix of some parts I got from the trade and some replacement bits sourced from my own bits-box. You can see the entire squad in my other thread about restoring a Battle for Macragge box, you might want to check it out if you like him!

Also, I totally agree, the crusaders are pretty epic. Another case of an older model being slightly less "clean" or "technical", but still having waaaaay more character and coolness factor than its more recent replacement. Ideally, I'll eventually find the time and somebody to play Killteam/Inquisitor/Inquisimunda etc. against, and then I'll finally get to use those minis. I already have around 30 varied minis for Inq28, so I really need to get to work posting them on here too!

The Dreadnought sarcophagus was such a serendipitous discovery. When I messed around with some parts and dry fit it together with the destroyer body, it basically snapped into place like it was meant to go there. It was too good of a match to not base a conversion on it, so here we are! Glad you like him! Thanks once again for your comment gobert!

Hey there! Back with another quick update. This time the painting session was rather short, as i just had 4 simple guardsmen to do. Here they are, completed:

As promised, I tried my hand at some camo for the first time. It was a very quick scheme, done by basecoating with grey, then adding white streaks, then adding black splotches over the top of that, and then ultimately going over everything with a Drakenhof nightshade wash. This added a blue filter to the colour and also created some contrast. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, considering this was a very quick paintjob. The models spent a rather long time in an ugly state, until I painted the skin and details, which ultimately allowed the camo to come into its own. Now, I'm by no means experienced with this kind of stuff, so I'd very much appreciate any of you veterans input and feedback on whether this looks acceptable/convincing to you.

Another shot, showing off the conversions I did on these. Once again, I chopped apart some lasguns and added magazines to create custom autoguns. With that loadout, these are actually a perfect representation of the old "Veteran Guardsmen" in the codex which could take autoguns or shotguns. I might be a little late for that. Still, I'm having a lot of fun with it and I've already made some more models just like them to give me an excuse to convert I'll have to show these off in here later as well, even if they may not end up in the challenge entries. Oh, btw, In case any of you were wondering: The conversion and paintjob on these were heavily inspired by the classic "Codex: Cityfight" cover artwork. Such an iconic work, and very inspirational to this day.

This back view shows off the camo pattern a little better. I'm really hoping that some guard experts among you can share their insights with me here. You may also notice I spiced these guardmen up with a lot of extra gubbinz. I made custom backpacks from greenstuff (I created several molds with Blue stuff to be able to quickly replicate them) and also attached loads of extra gear. I really want this squad to look like they are in a long campaign and need to carry all their gear with them. This is also my first attempt at sprucing up guardsmen, as all the previous Cadians I made were rather plain. I hope I pulled this off and made the gear look convincing as well. Personally, I rather like it, and I find they look a lot better and more realistic with loads of extras attached. Let me know your thoughts.

Alright, so takes us to precisely 40 models painted. So then there's still the matter of the next batch, which be a squad of Tempestus Scions converted into Inquisitorial Stormtroopers this time. Here they are, models 41 - 45, roughly prepped:

Looking forward to painting them up, but what I'm not looking forward to though is removing all of those horrid mold lines!! Ugh, there's soooo many of them Ah well, I guess there's no way around it. See you soon friends, please let me know your thoughts and stay tuned for further updates!

Thanks, I'm a big fan of your work and I'm happy you appreciate it. Your work has inspired my hobby progress as well, and actually motivates me a bit to get stuff painted.
I really like your crusaders, they're a pretty esoteric unit which never seems to get much love from anyone-GW or fans-nowadays. It's also pretty cool how you tied them into your GK army whether intentional or not.

And man, that Daemonhunter Inquisitor with Book sculpt is one of my favourites, the conversion work and paint scheme really add a lot of character to an already-excellent model. The Inquisitor-Necron-Dreadnought hybrid is so weird and original, the kitbash nails the gothic aesthetic of the imperium that GW is not really so eager to advertise as much any more.

As soon as I saw the Catachan parts on those Guardsmen, I instantly looked forward to what you'd do with them. The end result is nothing short of superb and I have to say, the guy on the far-left reminds me a ton of the Brotherhood of Nod Commando unit from C&C Tiberian Dawn, I think it's the urban camo scheme that does it.

Those Inquisitorial Stormtroopers look very promising. I always preferred the 3rd edition aesthetic more myself, the 2nd ed Stormtroopers are too "naked" for my tastes and the Scions don't really feel as gritty as their 3rd edition brothers. You really can't beat the classics. What heads did you use for them, if I may ask?

Overall, excellent progress and I eagerly await what you make next.

Thank you very much gobert for your input! Glad you like the urban camo scheme I came up with! There will be more minis in that scheme later, but the Inquisitorial Stormtroopers I wanted to be in the classic colours of mostly black and dark red. See below for pictures!
And yes, I’m well on my way to a complete Inquisitorial Agents Kill Team, and this unit of Tempestus Scions will give me additional options to build my list in different ways. I might actually be able to head over to my FLGS and get a practice game in with them soon, so that’s exciting!

Once again your kindness humbles me bulli! Also, very cool to hear that this is motivating you to paint more, I’d love to see it and I’ll definitely keep my eyes peeled!
Yeah, the last batch of minis was a nice mix of slightly more obscure sculpts and kitbashes which makes it fit well into the weird and gritty corners of the universe that Inquisitor likes to explore. It is such a great opportunity to dive into the depths of the setting and get creative. I always find it amazing to see the fantastic conversions, kitbashes and lore the Inq28 community manages to come up with here on Dakka or on Instagram, and I’m glad I found a way to express more of this with my own work. It’s basically what got me into this hobby all along. Man, I’ll really have to share some pics of my first White Dwarf magazine from 2001 with all of you here, it is still one of my favourite ones and contains so many amazing and inspiring things I would hate to see lost to time.
Regarding the Guardsmen: I figured you would like those, being an avid collector and painter of Catachans yourself! Glad to hear you enjoyed my take on them, and I hope you will also like the next batch of minis I will be working on. See below for more I wasn’t aware of the Brotherhood of Nod commandos, as I never played that game, but man, you are right, there’s definitely a resemblance there. Very interesting.
And wooow, OMG, I wasn’t aware of the old 2nd edition Storm Troopers miniatures! That’s nuts, and the fact that the new ones are pretty faithful to the old design makes me like them a lot more now! That’s awesome, thanks for pointing it out bulli! Anyway, I really wanted to replicate the Inquisitorial Storm Trooper models from 3rd edition with their awesome gas masks, augmetics and the speicial helmets. To do that, I used the older Cadian heads as a base to build from. Then, I added some night vision goggles to them which I sourced from the now OOP Space Marine Scout kit with the sniper rifles. To make the air filter unit, I simply cut and filed down a piece from a Grey Knight backpack and glued it onto the mouth. Then, I filled in and smoothed out all the gaps with a little greenstuff. Only different one was the Sergeant, who, as you might be able to tell from the blue plastic, features an Ultramarine head from a Kill Team starter box I bought a while ago. It was just too awesome of a sculpt to not use it on something like this. I believe the heads I made are not as cool as the original ones, but this is as close as I managed to get them, and I’m at least happy that they are distinct from the regular Tempestus Scions.
Thank you very much for your detailed reply and encouraging words, I loved reading it! Hope you will enjoy the update below!

Alright friends, time for another progress update! This time I’m afraid I took a bit longer than usual to get back to you. The past week was pretty rough work-wise and I was barely able to get any painting in because I was simply too tired. However, the next batch is now done and I’m here with pictures to show off! Let’s get started right away:

With that, models 41 – 45 are completed! These Tempestus Scions will give me a nice option to requisiton different units for my Inquisitorial Agents Kill Team. I should really get to my FLGS and try a practice game soon! I’ve put some better images in spoiler tags once again:

Spoiler:

Sergeant w/Plasma Gun

Trooper:

Trooper:

Vox Operator:

Trooper:

I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. It’s a bit more of a dark and gritty paintjob, which works really well with the Inq28 setting IMO. I hope you liked this squad, and I’d love to hear your input on these guys. Now, on to what is next on my table. Here’s minis 46 – 50, mostly ready for a paintjob:

This batch includes: One Interrogator model for my Kill Team, as well as four Guardsmen with varying loadouts. There’s a lot of conversion work going on here, so I’ve decided to also share some more detailed shots of these guys before I slap some paint on them. If you are interested, they are in this spoiler:

Spoiler:

Interrogator:

Sergeant w/ Autogun and CCW:

Sergeant (variable loadout)

Gunner w/ Grenade launcher (and a custom Stub gun )

… aaand that’s it for now! Hope you people liked what I showed off here today, and as always, I’m looking forward to your C&C on my work! Stay tuned for more friends, I’ll be back in due time!

Some awesome miniatures there Feisty and you’ve managed to churn them out at an impressive pace. The grey knights are my favourite I especially like how you’ve done the power weapons on them!

Thank you very much JordySteve! The challenge has helped me realize that I CAN, actually, be quite productive if I put my mind to it. An while I am still nowhere near as quick as some others in my Whatsapp group chat, I'm still happy to see that I can improve and get quite a lot done. And I'm glad to hear you like my Grey Knights! I had them lying around for quite a while, but couldn't be bothered to build them at first. When I saw how easy it is to make them look good, however, I got really sucked in and I ended up ordering more stuff from ebay to expand my force They are quite fun to make tbh. Oh, that reminds me, I meant to show off one of the Dreadnoughts I bought on ebay! I've put some in spoiler tags here, but there's more in my gallery:

Spoiler:

Just a very cool model I wanted to show off before I take it apart and do my own thing with it! It would be a shame to simply delete this cool conversion without sharing it with you guys, as it is actually quite well done IMHO. I especially like the OSL the original owner achieved with this one. Keep in mind this mini is not for the challenge, it was just a cool model I wanted to share here. Thanks for looking, and sty tuned for more hopefully soon!

You certainly got the darkness going with the storm troopers, I think the red glow accentuates it nicely

Thanks carlos13th for your comment, glad you like it! I have more Inq28 minis, I really need to share them on Dakka at some point!

Thanks gobert! Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the darker scheme, it gives them a slightly more menacing appearance and that is quite fitting for the Inquisition IMO!

Alright folks, time for another update! Sorry this one took so long, I got a little lazy as the finish line was approaching, but the next batch is done now. Here we go:

More pics in the spoiler tag:

Regular Guardsman:

... and in case some of you were wondering, here's a shot of the IG squad so far, set up together:

So this means my goal of 50 minis has been reached! WOOOHOOO! The next reward level is set at a hundred minis painted, which I most likely won't be able to reach till the end of May. However, since I seem to be on a bit of a productive streak lately (at least for my paltry standards), I've decided to keep painting to see how far I can get, and chip way on my backlog of grey plastic a little more. On that note, here's model 51, prepped for paint:

One of my dreadnoughts for my small, but growing Grey Knight collection. I'm trying to make sure that all the arms on the GK dreads are interchangeable. I'm always tinkering around, building more weapon options for them, or straight up ordering them off ebay. This dread features the basic loadout I need for the newer Grey Knights Combat Patrol. I also made some slight conversions on the sarcophagus to tie him in with the rest of my GK force.

Anyway, I hope you liked the stuff I showed off today and you'll stay tuned for more. Not only in this thread, but also my other ones, as, now that I've basically reached my set goal, I can start getting back to other projects such as my Battle for Macragge box set. I'm looking forward to your comments and feedback as always. Thanks for checking this out, and see you soon!

A good looking bunch of soldiers their feisty. Love the interrogator mini, where’s he from? That light effect on his shoulder turned out great
