I'm wondering if anyone plays games where either you choose not to take any mages/wizards at all, or perhaps where you and your friend both agree to not use any magic?
Seems like a lot of points, it can have a big impact, but it just takes away from what you can bring in your army.
I used to find that I took wizards just to defend against other players, and never achieved much with actual spellcasting.

We’ve been playing escalation league games (500/750pts) and I haven’t taken any magic users for my Skaven. Clan Skryre weapons seem to come close enough to filling that role. But at those lower point totals, Magic is expensive and you can’t trust wizards to get the spells they need and/or cast them reliably.
Now that we’re moving to 1000pts, I’ll be taking a couple of small magic items/banners, but still eschewing any spell-casters per se.
We’ll see how it works.
But at higher points totals, I think it gets harder and harder to avoid. Even just to keep from having to rely on the fated dispel as your only defense.

Also been in an escalation league, the other day at 1k my lvl2 wizard only got off one spell in six turns In general for any game I dunno why you wouldn't just spend 100 pts in a 1-2k list to at least have one wizard.

If you're a Dwarf player, well... no magic ist good magic
I usually do like to put in a Shaman or two, but rather as support, I rarely play Lvl.4s, because I like to let my Warbosses do the heavy lifting.
I did play some smaller games up to 1000 pts, or introductory games, without any magic at all. Works fine for most armies, except for those who heavily rely on it like Khemri or Vampire Counts.

I'm wondering, if you could play a game with someone, where you both agreed to have no magic, what would you spend the extra points on that you'd normally spend on a wizard or spell caster?

Sometimes. Depends on my build and what edition. Also point size. Because do I want a BSB or do I want a sorceress in my legions of doom?

In 6th we would do the first couple teaching battles without magic, and would save the Wizards for the first big 1,000-point battle that we'd build toward.
Conversely my brother and I will occasionally show up Wizardless in order to have a ridiculously fast game.

My friend regularly plays his Bretonnians without any casters. Hasn't seen a need for them in any of his lists.

Obviously excluding Undead, we used to do games without wizards a fair bit. We found we were all taking essentially a level 2 scroll caddy as "insurance" against the opponent's level 2 scroll caddy so we just left it out.
None of us ever used to run level 4s, because combat lords are so much cooler.
That said, I think magic is a pretty fun part of the game and I think it's generally better with magic included.

With the current magic casting rules, buying a few MR items for your units is often more viable than the same points of wizards. The 1.5 magic is much harder to cast so MR throws a bigger spanner into that plan.
