Edit - I’ll leave the poll up, but Umbral Caiman it is
———————

Hi all

As part of the Eldar space hulk thread I got interested in making an Eldar terminator equivalent aspect.

The Dark Reaper and Warp spider kits are on their way, but I thought I would get ahead of the game and see what kind of name might be best.

The purpose of the aspect is effectively the terminator role. Heavily armoured tunnel fighters. Agility is of limited benefit here, so heavy weapons, shield generators and heavy plate. I can see two main sides to the aspect: Exploration while being able to deal with anything that comes at them (hence the vanguard and scout type names) and then there is the mobile strongpoint side. Find a handy choke point and Dig in against all comers. These are the folks that draw the enemy in and bearhug them, allowing lighter more agile troops to skip through the lines and grab the goodies.

So I thought I would do a wee poll to begin with. Any other ideas please drop them below

As you might be able to see I had difficulty finding noble and heroic animal names for tunnel fighters. While naked mole rats and star nosed moles are amazing animals utterly suited to their environment, they don’t quite give off the right Eldar flavour

So some other thought. The warp spiders will give me something of an exoskeleton to mount extra weapons on. I’m thinking of using the reaper launcher as the primary weapon for each, it cutting it down quite a bit. It sure if I’ll keep the launcher end as it is, or if I’ll trim it to look a bit more like a Dragon fusion gun. The muzzle pods look rather similar in form.

I’ll certainly cut out the middle chunk of the launchers and mount the muzzle thingy much closer to the hand.

On the off-side I’m thinking one of the mini monofilament launchers mounted on an exo arm. I think I’ll only have 2 to go around though, and although I’m only thinking of doing 3 or 4 of them for fun, I might need to bodge something else into place. Might be as simple as the exarch blade arms, but let’s see what bits I end up with.

Planning to trim the helmet vanes off the Realer heads for use as shield projector gribbleys.

I also have a farseer and wraithguard that I got cheap through the Hatchette part works, so I might do one as a specialist warlock and ghost warrior attachment to the squad. All in all this project is shaping up to be fun

Fun project. I do not own eldar models or know any Eldar lore outside of DoW 1 and 2

Have you consider combining the words into one like so?

Ghostguard
Ghostwardens
Ghostreavers
Ghostlancers
Ghostblades
Ghostsentinels
Ghoststalkers

Me, I'd go with caiman for the unit name. Caimans are nocturnal and that sounds like a space hulk to me (it's dark in dere). They looked tough and armored, and like they got a nasty bite. They might even be faster than you'd think, which is not a bad fit for something Eldar based.

And unlike alligator or crocodile caiman is short and snappy.

Umbral Caimans? It's like black caimans, but edgier. Perfect for space elves.

Northumberland

Very cool idea Flinty. Seems like you want some kind of tunnelling creature and you're fairly set on Umbral as the descriptor.

It's a shame scarabs are already taken by the Necrons because that would be great. It's also a shame that lots of burrowing animals have really weenie names.

Umbral Asps is the best I can come up with, apparently certain species of Asps burrow.

One and a half feet in the hobby

@Mothsniper - nice idea, but the aspects all have double names. I know of the undescribed Slicing Orbs of Something, but the classics all have a double name.

@Geifer - love it! My wife also suggested alligators as they get into the sewers and move about Florida via drainage systems, but alligator was too long. Caiman is the perfect choice! Being reptilian also provides an easy link to Exodites.

@Olthannon - yes, I got caught on Umbral for deep shadows, which I think captures going into a hulk quite well. Asps would have been a nice selection, if Geifer hadn’t just knocked it out of the park

Heavily armoured, they slide through the tight spaces of a hulk, then bite your fething face off

New inspiration. I think I’ll graft D-scythe front ends on the cut down reaper launchers. They seem like perfect weapons for hulk spelunking (spehulking?). No muzzle flash, no damage to valuable archeotech or forbidden/enticing shinies. Bad guys just stop.

Maybe they aren’t as powerful or long ranged as the Wraithguard equivalent, but range don’t matter in the ‘hulk!

Boxes finally arrived, and I think this concept works remarkably well

It’s needed a bit of light reposing to get the one armed weapons sorted out, but everything has had nice easy cut points so far.

Main squad just about done.

3 Umbrals, escorting a specially kitted out farseer. Still working on a wraithguard support mincer, and maybe a 4th Caiman for the funs
