When I first started coming hear a long time back, the forum was so active it would cause me to have to flip back a few pages after school to find what I posted the night before. A few months ago it was much less active but still hopping constantly--but now it seems much less like that way. What happened?

I've noticed this as well, and the fact that the activity seems to have decreased is quite depressing, but, you've got to consider that Games Days, GT, and RTT season is winding down, if not done already. We've seen the release of COD, as well as plenty of rumors about upcoming releases. Right now I'd say that from a GW standpoint, there's just not too many exciting things going on.

Sept/Oct (fall) are slower months, mostly because School kicks back in for many and folks get used to new schedules. Expect things to pick up as holidays close in.

I've noticed this as well. I've been lurking and posting at dakka under different guises since 3rd edition was in its infancy. A time that many, myself included, consider to be the golden age of 40k. At the time I never thought I would look back at thoses days with such fondness. How I weep for thee...

I blame GW for the lack of interest in 40k boards.
Once upon a time, when portent was in its heyday, rumours abound and alot of people were eager to talk about even the most remote of topics. The possibilities seemed quite endless as the 40k unverse expanded. With the recent change in editions, alot of people felt 3rd ed was incomplete, all armies werent visited. Many took far too long to have rules released for them and interest waned.
Now that White dwarf has stopped including chapter approved and moved towards being purely a advertising periodical, there is one less avenue for discussion.
The rules are so flawed that many dont even want to argue over what is the correct interpretation anymore.
So we are left with a void of many things to discuss. We lack rumours, rules expansions in the form of chapter approved, and solid rules to work with. Eldar are all but released, and the next codex dark angels, is just starting to churn out anything resembling a confirmation of what we will see.
I am sure by thanksgiving in the US, we will see quite a bit more action as outdoor activities reduce and more info from GW is forthcoming. YMDC, army lists and the moddelling section should be rife with stuff for eldar in the mean time.

I often wonder what Hellfury does not blame on GW? Global warming, no I am sure that the GW factories produce tons of pollution that contributes to global warming. The war in Iraq, no I am sure that G W Bush is an avid wargamer and his playing wargames has made hima a warmonger. Just what is not GW's fault?

OK, Darrian. If you wanna play that way, I am more than willing to oblige. Your lack of the ability to adequately utilize your education is obviously not GW's fault. Touché I would much rather be critical of a thing I invest in as opposed to being a thoughtless cow. Criticism in general terms means democratic judgement over the suitability of an subject for the intended purposes, as opposed to the authoritarian command, which is meant as an absolute realization of the authority's will, thus not open for debate. Being critical of businesses is good for everyone. Do not confuse it for (perceived) continual blame.

@Hellfury, Who said anything about criticism? You wrote "I blame GW for the lack of interest in the 40K boards" I asked what Hellfury does not blame on GW. I think you reply to me brings your educational background more into question than mine.
Back on topic, I think Russ is right, these forums will be far busier in the holiday months.

The general decline in interest for GW games in general is the culprit. Why is there less interest...? That, I will leave for others to debate. The forum has ebbs and flows. I have been posting and lurking since 2ed. It gets better and worse. Though the above about the 3ed changeover as the hey dey of posting may just be accurate. At least the modelling forum still seem sto be hopping. I get no end of inspiration from that forum.... But that is both GW and non-GW stuff. ender502

I think Hellfury/Ender have hit it on the head. 1) There is less interest in the hobby as we know it (3rd edition hoopla) and 2) it's probably GW's fault that there is less interest in the hobby.
How to test this? For those of you who follow other boards, has anything else out there reached the critical mass of hobbyists/playtesters/fun discussions that Dakka has? Or is everyone pretty much sticking to regional forums that deal in their particular interests? If people aren't willing to bring their ideas to a large forum it's because maybe the game just isn't that big anymore. People are content to stay local, or within a specialized community.
Bah, talking too much. Hunt, post, kill.

Some of it has to be GW's move to the 6 month release. Sure, it makes it easier to keep rules creep in check, and insanity, and cross referencing, but the six month release pretty much means GW expects everyone to buy every army that gets released. At least, that's how I interpreted the move.
Think about how much income you throw into the hobby. 300 bucks every six months would be very conservative I'd wager (50 bucks a month). If the only new thing out is Space Marines army, does the consumer hold and wait two years for Eldar, or spend the 300 bucks on Space Marines anyway?
I think GW banked on people putting their 300 bucks into every army. 300 bucks of Space Marines, 300 bucks of Tyranids, 300 bucks of Black Templars, 300 bucks of Eldar.
What did I do (and a lot of others, I think)? 50 bucks on Space marines and 200+ dollars on anything else I could find. In my case this was Warmachine. Others went into Confrontation, Flames of War, Warhammer Fantasy (in this instance, it works out for GW) and XBOX 360s (well a little more than 200 bucks for the XBOX heh).
I'm not sure how accurate this is, but it's a theory of mine.

I've gotta agree with HF and Malfred (and Jester, just because). There's not a lot of GW rumor traction, but there's TONS of discussion of all sorts of other lines, from little-known makers to Warmachine.
Also, I blame GW for feeling sad inside and wanting to listen to Fall Out Boy.
Also: in before lock.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.
I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |
