I am in the progress of building a 4x8 game table and was wondering just how high off the floor it needs to be?  The legs I have (folding table legs) are 29.5" tall, so I'm building it up of course -- looking at it ending up being a grand total of 34.5", plus the thickness of the table, once done, which seems a bit short to me IINM.

What say you?

It depends how tall you are, but I think that elbow height is about right, which for me is about 43".  Experience has shown this to be an excellent height for model railroads.

This also leaves lots of easily accessible room under the table to store terrain and armies.

I built mine at 37 3/4 in. The normal tables my group plays on are probably around 28-30 inches, but most of them agree that my tables height is better.

I'd say that 34.5 would be pretty good height. Anywhere around 30-38 would be pretty workable IMO.

Are you my evil twin?  I was just about to chime in, mine is exactly 43" from floor to top, which makes room for a good sized area under the table for terrain and armies and comics.

A little bit above waist-height is ideal for me. I'd say... about 40", give or take. Higher tables are nice, since you don't have to bend over, but it's also good to be able to sit down during your opponent's turn and still be able to see what's going on. Of course, you could always do that with higher chairs if you want the table to be higher.

I've done mine at 48'', since cutting a standard 2"x6" plank gave me that height. I love it. Of course, I had to find high stools (bought some 36" high ones). I've built a 6" x 24" shelf about 6" lower than the playing surface on each long side (to put stuff like tapes, units during deployment, etc...). I'm thinking about adding some beerholders too.

Hey,

Build too low (under 30in), and you constantly have to stoop. Ouch!

Build too high (above waist height), and you can't reach over terrain.

The important thing is to be able to reach the center of the board easily.

So, err on the side of caution. Between 30-36in is fine.

FWIW, a standard Ping Pong table is 5x9ft and 30in high.

It folds for storage, and it's already green! ;- )

I find the net tends to disrupt gameplay.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

The net is just difficult terrain.
<G>

Seriously, though...
My table is about 50" high... I cut 8 foot long 4x4's in half for the legs, then built the table-top on top of that.
If I had it to do over again, I'd just pay for the extra cuts at the store & have the legs about 44 inches tall. That would be perfect.
As for sitting... As has been said... Stools.
