If you had to pick just one science-fiction/fantasy themed board game, would you
pick Talisman or something else entirely?

Within the restrictions, I'd go with Battlelore. Of course this would be until Days of Wonder released a Sci-Fi game with the same engine.

Speaking of boardgames, has anyone played or heard things about Twilight Imperium?  What's it like?

It seems to be kind of popular around here, or at least has the potential to be.

Malfred - I've heard good things about Twilight Imperium and Talisman, but have played neither.

There are several reviews for Twilight Imperium online. A while ago I was looking into it, but couldn't really tell from them if I wanted to risk the money.

I was thinking Risk 2210 too. All the fun of Risk, but more complex and with a scifi flair. Good game.

Fury of Dracula.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Something else. Fury Of Dracula's already been mentioned, also Warrior Knights, Warhammer Quest, Arkham Horror, Robo-Rally.

Pretty much anything over Talisman, to be honest

Zombies!!!, or Space Hulk.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Zombies.
OR for a fun card game (not CCG) you can pick up Nuclear War. It's expensive for what you get but the fun factor is A+++.
It also has two expansions and is published by a company called Flying Buffalo.
Or if you can find it; Black Death, the game where each player is a disease and the idea is to infect and kill the population of Europe. Body count in "Millions Served". Fun factor A+Infinity+6x4. I got mine on ebay for like $7.00 including the shipping.

I have nothing useful to add.

So I take it Zombies is pretty fun?  I haven't played it, but I know people who have it and I've seen it.  It's pretty cheap...is it worth picking up?

Right behind you

I own zombies but it doesn't seem as fun as it first was- but that's just my opinion and there's a bunch of expansions for it that I haven't played.

Currently though my vote is for Runebound although it does take awhile to play.

Oh, and much respect to Heroquest- I loved that game as a kid.

Good luck finding it though.

Definitely 1st edition Space Hulk for me. All the way to the bank.

Non-sci-fi/fantasy, I'd go with Settlers of Catan.

I play (click on icons to see pics): DQ:70+S++G(FAQ)M++B-I++Pw40k92/f-D+++A+++/areWD104R+T(D)DM+++
yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

Starfarers of Catan is a decent enough sci-fi eq of Settlers.

Risk 2210 is my favourite version of Risk.

Church: So it is a sword, It just happens to function like a key in very specific situations.
Caboose: Or it's a key all the time, and when you stick it in people, it unlocks their death.

Chainsaw warrior - solo play legend.

Space Hulk was good before all the badly thought out expansions.
(A bit like third edition rules followed by all those bad codexes/codeci)

"Bloodstorm! Ravenblade! Slayer of worlds! Felt the power throb in his weapon. He clutched it tightly in his hand and turned towards his foe letting it build in the twin energy spheres and then finally! RELEASE! The throbbing weapon ejaculated burning white fluid over them as Bloodstorm! Ravenblade! laughed manfully!" - From the epic novel, Bloodstorm! Ravenblade! Obliterates! the! Zombies is cool, but you really have to play it with people who're into the genre to aprecciate the humor

Settlers of Catan is awesome. Zombies gets a big 'meh' from me.

But the board game I've played over 400 times and still find interesting is: Eurorails! The "board" is different every game: when you build your train track, you draw it on the board in crayon.

Nothing but 1st edition Space Hulk.

I wish GW would put it out again, except instead of terminators they'd have stormtroopers. 1.) the Imperium's not going to waste marines when there's plenty of orphans to raise & train to use hellguns and 2.) I really liked those gas mask stormtrooper models way more than the kasrkin and they're gone. And, y'know, they sucked in-game. So make 'em in plastic so I can have a use for them.

And this concludes your tour of Mister X's candy-colored fantasy world.

Dakka on World of Warcraft:

MANNAHNIN: I know two guys who have had to quit the game cold turkey because the time investment required by it caused problems with their family life.

JFRAZELL: So in other words, nature is self selecting out those not fit to survive and breed? Hail WOW replacing savannah lions since 1997...

I admit Zombies! can be slow but it's freakin' zombies!!!!
The pawns are "shotgun guys". With the expansions you can have zombie dogs, zombie chicks, and government enhanced zombies.
What's not to love?

I have nothing useful to add.

I'd have to lay my vote with Zombies, it's simple, plays fast and is great fun if you turn it into a drinking game
