Hi everyone! It's been a bit of time since I posted here anything, but I'd like to tell you about my new project:

A whole Battle Company (that is 6 Command squad marines, 60 Tacticals, 20 Assault and 20 Devastator marines = 106 figs.) of Ultramarines. I plan to add several vehicles, terminators, scouts, bikers, veterans etc. to the army too, but my main effort is to have a whole company in my hands in about 10 months (I work slow...).

Here's the first marine I've built. I'm not happy about the painting, so I haven't finished the details yet. I'm painting a second test marine with a different style first.

This is gonna be a pretty boring army to watch being built since it will be blue marine after blue marine (106 of them), but I can post pics of the squads as I finish them (about one squad per month) if there is any interest.

Yes, this is a bit different from my previous projects (Hrud and Blood Pact) but I wanted to have a marine army. And with the upcoming Apocalypso, I wanted to have a BIG marine army.

I don't think it's going to be boring at all, its going to ber very fun to watch it come together and the final assembled army pic will be NUTS. Keep working on that scheme. Simple and crisp.

Hammer! Always great to see your armies, inspiring stuff every time. You making some Ultra Nid Hunters too? I dig their rules enough to run Ultras just for them ...

Good luck, the tester here looks good to me.

Thanks guys!

Grey Death & scarab:  Yes, this is a big effort for me. Biggest project so far that I've attempted. The conversions might not be complex, but there will be a lot of them (every marine is/will be biggerised).

Boss Salvage: Yes, I kind of have to do some Nid hunters too now that I chose to do the Ultras. Perhaps one of the companys tactical squads could be nid hunters?

If you really feel a losing of intrest in painting Brother Jean the blue number 65 do some minor conversions that keeps the motivation up. It adds the "I wonder what it looks like painted" thought and that really helps.

Here's the first squad of the 4th Co in a group shot. Yeah, they're still in many, many bits. I have managed to finish building another marine after taking this shot though and will try another style color scheme on it this weekend. So expect more pics soonish.

FodaBett: The colour scheme of the first marine is simply (Vallejo version) Ultramarine blue mixed with black and/or white. This scheme is too slow way to paint the marines, so I'm looking for a faster way for myself too.

Well, I've finally managed to build all ten marines (and got some headway into the Land speeder).

I've just given them the UM blue basecoat. My deadline for them is the end of the month, so I have a week to paint them. I am a slow painter though, so I don't know yet if I will make it.

Pictures as soon as I get something done.

Yes, I'm biggerizing them. They are about the same size as Migsulas marines. Since we play together I had to biggerize mine or they would have looked ridiculously short next to Migs marines!

It makes building a hundred marines a bit more complex job, though. That's why I only do ten marines per month and this thing will take 10-12 months to finish (at least).

To push me actually to finish this effort I've taken an "army challenge" along with Migsula, Scarab and some other guys (and one gal). Scarab will tell you more about this challenge once we reach the first deadline (the end of this month).

Our groups been VERY disfunctional as of late. What with members scattered around the globe and others suffering nervous break downs But everyone's working hecticly for next summer and proper Apocalypse Campaign taking place on two continents!! and I will take the reigns for the finnish campaign with a few new faces hopefully joining in, so it should be excellent.

Oooo.... I missed the deadline.

I need to pick up the pace a bit so that I won't miss the next months deadline!

Anyway, here's a pair of  WIPpics to show the progress. Pics of the full squad will follow in few days.

This pic shows the sergeant of the first squad.

This pic shows the size difference to a "normal" marine (a very old fig I found in my bits box).

Very nice work mate! Love the character in them and the bases are very nice!

First you post horrible pics, then you get a new camera and psot such close ups they would make anyone's work look so so. Use a sheet of paper on the backround and resize them smaller next time! I really want to see more and proper pics and maybe now also from an angle with comparison that shows the real size of this bad boys!

Whe would have though that a rainbow of colors could look so hardcore? This is really fun for a bright color guy like me to see.

I'd like to make a joke about rainbow colors...but failing that I shall just say that it doesn't look in anyway too bright or colorful to me and I have a lingerings uspicion that the lighting hammer is using is making it more so than it is.

Really neat marines. I do think the use of both green and purple on the marines detracts from the overall blue look, I'd say go with grey armor in the joints and gold for the shoulderpad trims. That's just me tho. The gold forms a natural contrast with the blue, and also keeps you away from "swedenmarines" since it's not a pure yellow. But the green just kinda sinks into the blue armor, while the gold would pop. I'd really suggest the gold, but if your set on the green, then there's nothing to it.

Great conversions as usual. That mold line on the marines helmet on the right in the size comparision picture is a bit disturbing.

Cheers

I actually really like the green - for fluff reasons too and it's "your" UM army, not the standard Eavymetal second company  I think the green accentuates the blue very elegantly. I think you could've maybe even tried shading the blue with DA green ever so slightly.

And we want more, better pics man!

@Migs
Above is a paintover of what it would look like with gold, using HAmmers browns and yellows for the gold(I used only colors available in the eagles etc that are already painted goldish).
Well, that is a matter of taste, in my opinion gold accentuates it better, brings out the forms in the shoulderpads, and makes that marine look more, well, heroic. Gold has an ability to really "stand out" whether it's wth metal flaked paint, or not(called NMM). I did a quick paintover using Hammers colors for the gold from his chest eagles, I think it looks cool, because the colors pops. But that's still just me. I just think it'd be a huge mistake in terms of "table presence" to make them green trimmed. Which is why I'm pursuing the topic for this extra reply. If you both think it's the next best thing, then cool, I just wanted to attempt to validate my opinion, at least in a way that makes me feel like I tried to explain it(hence the paintover).

By the way, here's the OFFICIAL GW Ultramarines second company command squad(how suitable, thank you GW). http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99120101028&orignav=10
I don't see any green...

@Hammer
I'm not trying to force you to go gold with the pads, I'm just talking about what I'd think would look even better. I hope you don't mind the paintover, if you do, just lemme know and I'll remove it.

The army will be cool, no matter what colors the trims are in the end, but I think, personally, IMO, etc, that gold trims(NMM or metallics) would work best.

And, I friggin hate this forum format, it's about as handy as 1930s steamroller...

Cheers

Hey, I totally agree with you; gold would look good on the shoulder pads.

But I'm going for codex astartes heraldy. Yellow (gold) is the second company color. My guys are from fourth company. And their color is... you guessed it, green!

The second company is done to the death, you see the yellow rimmed ultramarines everywhere. That's why I chose another company for my ultras.

So I'm sticking to the green shoulder rims. Thanks for the effort to try to change my mind though. What you suggested would work in another circumstances.

Note about the pics: the colors displayed are too bright and strong. They are IRL more muted. So my guys are not as rainbow-looking as you would guess when judging just the pics. I don't know how to adjust the pictures colors to be closer to what they really are...

But at least the pictures are far more sharper than what they were with my old camera. You can actually tell what's going on in the pics even if the colors are still a bit too bright.

Okay, green it is then. Speaking of green tho, have you tried doing it with a warm highlight, that would mean highlighting it by mixing in for example bleached bone for the higlights. It might help the green pop a bit. Just a thought.

I haven't seen too many 2nd companies. And who cares if they are done to death, if you got the best looking one?

Well, looking forward to seeing more.

Cheers

Darn. I spent an hour and half taking pics, but the settings of my camera were off (I'm still trying to learn to use it) and the pics came so-so... So I didn't bother to process them. Here's few group shots that seemed to come okay...

the more i look at them the more stuff I see that i like.

The gleam of the beak heads helmet light. the battle damage on the auspex marine. The blast shield on the missile launcher. The soft glow of the plasmagun.

Just great stuff man.
