Doing the rat cultists convinced me. Genestealer cults are the new hawtness.

To keep this army playable it will follow 'nid rules, since most of the little bugs have human stats (more or less) I think this works.

So most of the little bugs will be cultists, plus 'stealers, plus some big mutant things.

HQ
Broodlord (aka patriach)
Flyrant? (some sort of nid/dragon mix)

Elite
Lictors (as is)

Troops
Stealers
gaunts (cultists)
rippers (human wave)

Fast
spore mines (human bombs)

Heavy
Zoanthrope (magus)
Carnifex (chaos spawn? unbound defiler? carnifex?)

So I guess my question is, can a gaunt stealer heavy army be competative or do I need TMCs?

I'd do Carnifexen as corrupted, "living" Battlecannon(Barbed Starngler)/Lascannon(Venom Cannon) Russes. To keep somat with older lists and fluff.

I don't know what people on this board may think but i've always been under the impression that chaos cults and genestealer cults are completely separate entities.

So i would avoid using any chaos models in the army, unless you convert them to look suitably tyranidy.

That being said - good idea about doing a genestealer cult army.
I can just image those human swarms - 3 humans with glowing eyes staggering forward on one of those termie-sized round bases - perfect!

I've continued to toy with a 'stealer cult army that looked like:
Patriarch (broodlord) + retinue
Genestealers
'thrope (Magus)
Either Gaunts or rippers as cultists

I'd probably do gaunts as hybrids and rippers as cultists, but that's just me. Perhaps vice-versa?

As to TMCs, I'd also avoid the chaos thing (yeah, I know you used to be able to use 'em all together, but that's not the point). I'd do 'fexes as some kind of twisted sentinel (same base) or messed up tank (not a russ necessarily; could be local aux./militia equipment), perhaps the old limo as a gun buggy = 'fex.

Flyrant...I don't know what you do here. Possessed governor riding landspeeder/hovervehicle? Meh.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I think it's a good idea. I've always liked Genestealer Cults. And who knows, maybe someday you'll get an actual list for them....

But as it stands, I think the Tyranid list you cooked up would work well.

I'm thinking magus on a HE dragon. May the Space Emporer cuss me for this, but that is one nice model. A head swap for fex or warrior head should make it look like some sort of native lifeform infected by 'stealers.

I want to avoid using vehicles as things with wounds, hence the thought of using the cyber demon as a some sort of mutant/cyborg thingy.

Oh and cybered up ogryns as warriors/macro servitors.

I just use the Journal rules for 'stealers. Theres a decent ruleset on BOLS too.

The Journal one was pretty official for 3rd and being 3rd ed codexes are valid till replaced I'd use that.

All depends on your opponents.

I've thought of it but rather not put in all the work for a ruleset I might never use.

I get few enough games as is without further jinxing myself.

yeah, the counts as route ensures you'll be able to play them with little to no fuss.

I'd totally use Limos as Carnifexes, but I understand your reluctance.

I dunno, there is a glaring hole where you have missed out the patriarch's limousine... cant be a stealer cultist army without that Seriously though, sounds like a great list and there are never enough stealer armies out there so I look forward to seeing how it goes!

Limos can always be objectives or part of a base.

Maybe a broodlord busting out of the roof of one?

-2nd the Carnifex as a stand in vehicle of some sort.

-Did the old cultists have psykers? If so use the Nid Psyker or a hive tyrant with maxed psyker stuff.
-Additionally cult ogryns could be counted as using tyrant guard (if tyrant above), or ravenors/warriors.
-warriors and ravenors could also count for some sort of light vehicle (jeep type or the aforementioned limo). I mean come on, whats not to like about a jeep driven by two half stealers/aliens, one like Sgt Rock with a cigar in his mouth firing away with a machine gun (devourer). Sweet!

edit: Limo stand in-Tyrant with wings. The Toughness/wounds represents the awesomeness of the limo, and the wings represent its manly Ford 350 V8 engine. Cult ogryns could be dressed up in suits with little ear buds, running alongside the limo-a fine Cult President secret service detail.
