If you're attending Origins this year, you lucked out! This is also the weekend of ComFest, Columbus's annual community festival, AKA "The Party with a Purpose".
It's the largest free, non-corporate urban music and arts festival in the US and is held at beautiful Goodale Park which is less than a five minute walk from the Convention Center where Origins is held. Not sure where to go? Head to the north end of the Convention Center hallway, exit to the corner of High and Goodale and follow the music.

A word of caution: ComFest draws a huge crowd and runs from noon till midnight. It may create a lot of traffic hassles and parking problems for those of you arriving on Friday or Saturday. Additionally, the Columbus GLBT Pride Parade will be marching down High Street beginning at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon, so that may cause some traffic headaches as well. It's fun to watch though!

Which brings me to another word of caution: We're talking free spirits everywhere of every orientation so ComFest requires an open mind. Topless men AND women (yes, it's legal here), tattoos, piercings, unusual costumes, unusual pets, bright colors, lot's of noise. You get the idea.

There's six stages featuring local bands, live arts, and political activists (I recommend the Offramp stage - since that's where all my friends' bands are playing ), lot's of street vendors, cheap beer, and a diverse selection of food from funnel cakes to falafel. This years' Guest National Artists are Michelle Shocked and Black 47 who you old timers may remember from MTV's 120 minutes.

Around 1:00 pm on Saturday, make sure you go outside for some fresh air and to watch the Pride Parade march down High Street. It's a trip.

For more info check out:
http://www.comfest.com

P.S. I'll be checking out the Origins merch booths on Friday and/or Saturday, so PM me if you'd like to say howdy.

That kind of goes without saying. Although props to those who aren't afraid to fly their nerd flag away from the relative anonymity of the internet or their FLGS.

Columbus, Oh

Not to mention that if you are trying to park anywhere near the convention center, you are going to have an uphill battle. Comfest attracts at least as many folks as the convention does, and both battle over available parking spots.

Personally, I plan to ride the bus down.. and can park in my driveway.. lol

But, if you have no evening plans for the convention.. walk the extra 2 blocks and enjoy the party!

Elusive.. My friends band are playing at 12:15 in the afternoon on Saturday..

I also found out last night that the WarStore has a booth and will be dealing in both new and bitz at the con! Whoo Hoo!

@ Porkuslime: Cool. What's your friend's band called? I can walk it to the Fest, but I'll probably take the bus when I go to Origins in case I buy anything. Rather not walk around ComFest with my Origins goodie bag.

That was really more then "a word". It was many words. Parties with purpose are boring, as good parties have no purpose other then being a party. Now a party with a porpoise... Personally I only go for corporate rock so I just don't see myself going.

The last time I was at Origins was the first year that Flames of War debuted and I was helping to run demos of it. I took a break for lunch and went across the street for a Cheeseburger. When I came out the parade was starting and I couldn't cross the street back. So I sat on the sidewalk with some nice lesbian couple and we chatted it up and enjoyed the parade.

I hate to stoop to this, but I think ComFest is a worthy cause that should be experienced by everyone at least once, so... two words that may sway even the most conservative, corporate-rock-listening gamer to stop by the fest:

bare boobies.

Thanks for noticing how serious I was. I recognize that it was hard to discern my intent, especially in a post on a board (titled Dakka Dakka) about playing a game (called Warhammer) which involves painting 1 inch tall science fiction figures (called Harlequins and Tyranids).

In all my travels, in all the places I have been and the festivities I have partaken in, i have NEVER seen a pair of flaunted naked bare boobies that were actually worth looking at. Women who respect their boobs enough to keep them firm and beautiful don't walk around for 12 hours in the heat letting them bounce against their knees... they make the man work his ass off and open his wallet (often) to see them.

But then again, if you like hairy nipples on boobies swaying between some chubby chicks thighs, rock out...

EDIT: Looking for that line... where is it...? Oh, there it is! Behind...me...oh crap...

There is an attitude that not having an insanely optimized, one shot, six stage, omnidirectional, inevitable, mousetrap of an assassin list army somehow means that you have foolishly wasted your life building 500 points of pure, 24 karat, hand rolled, fine, cuban fail. That attitude has been shown, under laboratory conditions, to cause cancer of the fun gland.

That's a worse mental image then the pic I posted

Not the one at Origins.

Columbus, Oh

Last year at Comfest, my wife and I took the teenager (girl) to experience the freedoms that are allowed here in Columbus. While neither of my gals participated in the bareness above the waistline.. we saw, maybe 19 ladies (yes, we kept a count) who had made the commitment. Of them... about half (10), were regular ladies, who had justifiable pride in themselves, and were causing traffic issues. The remainder were divided amongst Those That Should Not Have Done So.. and folks whose gender were questionable.

My bad then. It was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the thread title. I should have put a [Ogre][/Ogre] around it for clarity.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, etc. etc.
