Right, I have decided that now is the time for me to dip my feet back into the waters of 40k.

Trouble is, I popped into my local GW today in search of inspiration, and none came. I want to play the game, but I just cannot think of an army that appeals to me.

Now, I am putting this down to not having really played since the end of 3rd Edition, and as such, not really knowing what sort of armies I can field, despite owning all the 4th/5th Codecies released to date.

I want something either distinctly unusual or downright exotic. Any suggestions?

Doesn't have to be a tried and tested winner either. I just want to look good when I lose.

Space Marines. No one plays them.

Forever alone

Unless you count all people under 12.
Did you play WHFB before? If so, what army? Because most fantasy races have a 40k equivalent.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I currently have Empire, Dark Elf and Savage Orc armies.. But I want something really unusual.

Have you encountered any uniquely themed armies out there? I am a sucker for converting.

I have considered Orks, but still waiting to see how I want to do them in my minds eye.

Kroot Mercs FTW!!! literally nobody plays them (that i know of), and (imo) they look pretty schnazzy. you could also put together an all wolfen 13th Co Space Wolves army (another army that looks bad ass imo).

there are others im sure, but those are the only 2 that i can think of atm.

good luck!

Then after that he can start a 13th Company army, followed by an Ulthwe Strike Force, and finish it off with a Lost & The Damned Army!!! YEAH!

Suggest armies that exist - like Space Marines - that way he won't waste his money.

Thing is, I don't, and never have, played in Tournaments, so perhaps Lost and the Damned might be the answer.

Chockfull of conversion work, unusual, and rarely seen. Yep. That ought to give my opponents some fun battles.

Wonder where I put my Black Crusade Codex thingy....

Look, if you're just playing with your friends, and don't care what GW says you can play with, then hell yeah do Lost & The Damned.

Here's how you should do it:

Step One:

Buy new Chaos Space Marine Codex.

Step Two:

Burn new Chaos Space Marine Codex.

Step Three:

Get the previous Chaos Space Marine Codex and use that, because it's more interesting, and fits better with the options given in the LatD List (plus you'll have actual Daemons).

Step Four:

Buy Catachans (or Cadians), Zombies, Orks and Chaos Marauders, and maybe some Spawn. These four units will make you all sorts of different models. Every single one can be unique, and you'll have a great time making them.

Step Five:

Buy another copy of the new Chaos Space Marine Codex and burn it too... just to be sure.

Spawn I have covered...procured the Tide Of Spawn for Apocalypse, and thus have hundreds of random gribbly bits sitting at home....

I shall dig out my old books tonight and have a damned good squizz over them.

Friend of mine and I did that and split it between us. I already had two Spawn from the CSM Army Box, so now we both have 6. Makes for a great walking wall of flesh, eyes, crab-claws and tentacles. Of course, we don't use GW's Spawn rules 'cause we're not idiots...

You'll have fun with them. Of all the armies I have the ones I've had the most fun with are the ones where I got to make every model unique - my Lost & The Damned army and my Deathwatch army. For my DW army, as each model is from a different Chapter, I personalised them as much as I could (my fav being the stern looking Imperial Fist Marine who leads my DW Dev Squad). For my LatD, well, I have over 90 mutants, and every single one is different. I even have names for some of them like Many-Arms McCoy, The Gimp, The Gimp Mk. II, Gruntz, Trogdor, Lord Grimlock, Snarl and so on. Each one of them can tell a story, and the more parts from different kits you include, the better. I've got a guy that is part Ork, part Catachan, part Chaos Marauder, part Zombie, part plastic Goliath from Necromunda, and part metal shotgun from the ancient Necromunda weapon sprue. Another one has arms from an old plastic Genestealer Hybrid along with Ork, Zombie, Chaos Mutation Sprue, Catchan and other things.

If you've got a huge bitz box, this army is perfect. You can come up with all sorts of stuff.

IT's tempting to just fill my bitz box with PVA, let it dry, chisel out random shapes and see what I come up with!

Don't do that! GW will see two sales of the current C:CSM and think that people are buying it because they like it and not for its proper usage as sacrificial materials!

Then you just send them the ashes with a 'Best Wishes From All the Word Eater, Night Lord, Iron Warrior, Word Bearer. etc. Players' note attached.

I feel your pain, Doc. It's been a long time since I've done any work on a GW product at all.

There is the answer right there. A zombie I guard army. It's unique and leaves room for all kinds of creativity. Just think you could have skeletal dragon war walkers, decaying and rusted out tanks, how about a Vampire commander, Skeletal rough riders etc etc.

Sadly, I have technically wussed out on the Lost and The Damned army.

I have instead completely caved in to the Daemons, going so far as to write a provisional 2,000 point list, which I shall soon tweak.

Got no Nurgle in there at the mo, so perhaps I can drop out some of the Screamers to squidge in some Plaguebearers.

I was gonna suggest Adeptus Mechanicus using Witch Hunters rules and a flood of conversions, but you got sucked into the warp first. Just me then.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

If converting is your thing, then it’s fairly easy to do a unique army from just about any codex. I've been considering doing a noise marine army for a long time (and I'll consider it for years to come) where each squad is themed off of a different 80's heavy metal band. Squad Iron Maiden runs up along side squad Dokken. Cultists (I'll work them in somehow) can be lead by Judas Priest and I'll have deamonetts for groupies. Need to get an action figure (or at least a head) of Ozzy Osborne for my daemons prince and its good to go. Bonus points if I can figure out how to get rhinos to play music from the bands.

But really, things like that are very unique and interesting even if the army itself isn't. The conversions and the theme of the army become what is unique (rather than just playing as another blood angles or black templar army).

phoenix, lookup twisted land of oz, they guy that makes them has all ozzy / iron maiden stuff
(i think its Mcfarlane)
and ozzy needs to be biting the head off of a fell bat

as for the rhino problem: i-pod shuffle fits inside nicely, all you need to do then is rip the speakers out of a small i-pod docking station
how do i know this? my GF is still pissed at me for tearing apart alot of stuff for a WIP singing slaanesh dread

Doc (sorry, get too involved in every convo ) if your going with daemons its allways good to take some nurgle, nothing helps more than a walking pus shield

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.
