I’ve been saying for a while that she wasn’t that dumb, just someone that hadn’t paid much attention to the world stage before becoming VP candidate. I might have been wrong.

If it's true, it's really more of a failing of her staff than of the candidate personally. People like her are handed a phone and told who it is, it's her job to get through the call, not verify it.

I can't sit through pranks. I know a part of pranks like this is meant to show that the person's
arrogance is so puffed up that they're perfectly willing to believe that the thing you say is
happening is actually happening, but it's also mean-spirited and dishonest to draw them out
in such a way.

I think this should be kept in mind when they speak on their platform on national security and international experience.
The candidates are their staff, and are responsible for the staff's inadequacies.
Also Palin showed herself as inadequate, in the way she so easily duped.
It would be dangerous to risk the country to her stewardship.
This is a person who would have to be president in the case of assassination or the failure of president's constitution.
She would be one of the president's primary advisers, what, if anything, would she be able to advise on... I mean really....

I'm right there with you on that, but it's worth a listen to to get a feel for how she (as Vice President) may handle a relatively off-the-cuff situation.
It's like a job interview with good kitchen work, you need to be ready to SHOW them you can cook.
And in this simple ~6 minutes she dropped the ball, and the people her party had placed with her dropped the ball.
With Palin applying for a position that affects so many people's lives I think it would be almost irresponsible not to grab all information available (even when it's presented in such a grating fashion)

That was the really surprising bit. I can understand repeating the same carefully parsed expressions again and again when talking to the public - that's politics really. It's a little jarring when that's all you can say to foreign leaders in a (presumably) private call.

This isn't on the news because there isn't really anything to report. While she is here illegally, it is a matter of administrative rather than criminal, impropriety. This is just one more story which receives extra attention because Obama is being sold as 'mysterious' by the GOP. If he were a white protestant no one would have even paused to investigate the matter.

In any case, McCain has plenty of 'skeletons' in his closet which are ignored because they are simply part of political life. His 'connections' to the Kremlin for example.

Both the prank call and the legality of Obama’s auntie are irrelevant. This is on the news because it’s funny. Obama’s auntie isn’t.

The cries of media bias always come up around election time and they always miss one key point – any possible political bias is easily outweighted by a professional bias to reports the big stories. No station manager is going to ignore a story and give up ratings because he likes a candidate, because no ratings equals no job.

Also, this is an aunt from the side of his family he met all of once. It's not like it's his Favorite Aunt, whom he spends every weekend with; more like a one-time acquaintance with whom he shares some DNA.

Now, if she was criminally in violation, or Obama had pulled strings to get her excepted from the rules, then there might be a story... but when even INS isn't getting hyped, it's nothing.

Pranks like that get pulled all the time, and even top pols get caught occasionally. It doesn't mean a thing.

around the world. However, only 200 million or so people are of the voting age.

We should worry when people don't care about our elections.

You are right on that count, but honestly China is the country to watch in the future, especially given how much of out national debt they and Japan control.

So I take it you're currently living in the U.S. and getting a good cross-section of U.S. media -- local, national, print, radio, TV, etc.? I know I'd have a hard time commenting on biases in Aussie media because I don't live there and get that kind of wide exposure.

As others have said, the media just likes a good story because it drives ratings and sells advertising. Whether or not you want to believe it, the media doesn't worship either political camp, but they sure do worship the almighty dollar.

To be honest, the media's has just been dying for McCain to start closing the gap, as there's no story or drama in someone grabbing a solid lead and sitting on it. Right now the horse race is fairly boring, and that doesn't help their bottom line. They'd love to see an Obama meltdown in the closing stages. Can you imagine the media frenzy?

Also, conservatives seemed to like the media just fine when they accepted the WMD story without asking any hard questions, when they ran with the phony "swift boat" story, when they hung Willie Horton around Dukakis's neck, when the Clintons couldn't shake the Whitewater story despite that whole "scandal" ultimately going nowhere...the list goes on.

Both sides try to manipulate the media. The GOP just gets irritated when the media isn't agreeable for *them.* It's funny how you didn't hear much about the liberal media elite when Reagan was POTUS.

ahhh, do you have any? Generally canadians only move to the US for retirement (and only to florida because its warmer) or because you thorw three times as much money at us to come work for you. The numbers are very low in terms of illegal Canadians in your country which would probably be why you don't hear about it. Canada has more illegal americans in it than the other way around, but then again we've always had a soft spot for draft dodgers, escaping slaves, good hearted people, ect. coming here from the US in the search of freedom.

I read/saw/heard news reports about it in/on at least 5 different places:

Tow local news web sites, AOL news, CNN.com and a local news broadcast (NBC).

Do you know the specifics of it?
He barely knows the woman, had no idea she was even IN the states still, believes she should be deported and, once he found out that she'd donated to his campaign (total of a couple hundred bucks, over a period of donations), gave it all back.

It's not the smoking gun that many would like it to be.
