Dakka Dakka lend me your ears!

Alright, well, my friends and I started playing 40K. Picked up AoBR and that was fun, I picked up marines.. but didn't really want to keep collecting an army for them.. ..

So, I picked up some Tau and after thinking it through I realized how much I would hate not being able to smash someone's face into the ground via a charge.

I don't want to play Orks, my friend is already playing them, that and I just don't want to play'em.

Chaos Marines seem like somethin' I would enjoy.. as does Space Marines :\. However, I also like Tyranids a lot. [Of course, I've no experience with any. I enjoy the hobby, just want to make sure I enjoy my army as well.]

So I come to you, wise Dakka Dakkites, for some insight and sound advice about the aforementioned armies.

Make up cardboard armies and play them all then start buying the ones you like. To me you sound like a Eldar man, Elite ranged Weapons, yet they still have some sweet CC units (harlies, Banshees, wraithlords, Striking scorpions)

Tyranids are space bug dinosaurs. Who doesn't like space bug dinosaurs?

Orks make things out of old sedans and firetrucks that they kill people with.

Chaos marines are seven foot tall supermen in super armor, but they are evil.

Tau are anime children in giant robot suits, they defeat the enemy through determination and friendship.

Eldar are 1980's anime space elves. Go watch lord of the rings and robotech at the same time and you will get a feel for them.

Necrons are evil space robots that used to fight the autobots but then they had to hide for a while because they were hungry.

Space marines are giant supermen in super armor. They worship the emprah, and are generally giant dicks to everyone.

Imperial guard are basically the good guys from starship troopers. They have lots of drama, and get killed in stupid ways.

Dark eldar are skinny european college kids who took a lot of acid and just want to have fun with your holes. Also they look like power ranger villains.

I hope this helps.

Ah, Eldar. I suppose I should have said something, I'm not much "for" Eldar. They seem cool and diverse, but just don't suit my taste. Thanks for your feedback, its appreciated.

Haha, I kind of already saw it like that. Though I think your wording is more colorful than what I might have said.

I like the idea of Chaos Marines, but they are very intimidating for a novice painter [well, at least me]. Tyranids are very sauce-filled and I really like them, but I think they're going to be more expensive than I can afford at the moment. Space Marines seem to be over-played and not very well respected. I liked the idea of SW's, but I'm not even sure they are field-able.

I would like to go SM, but a recent tournament at our LGS had like 900 SM armies + a few Xenos. Plus my group of friends has two SM players already, so it seems really saturated lol. I really like the SM bikes though.

Ugh, I don't know..

I'd appreciate more posts/feedback though.

And thanks for those that have posted above.

Just to dispell the notion, chaos space marines are easier to paint than tyranids. The organically designed armies like tyranids, daemons, orks, and IG (basically skin, shell, and cloth) are much more difficult to paint than the more sci fi and industrial designs of the other armies. With a chaos space marine army you really only need to know how to stay within the lines, but that doesn't cut it with anything that doesn't have full plate body armor.

Whichever models you like best should be the army you go with.
I am playing Nids for my 3rd time (should have kept the ones i had) and also Space Marines again. One cc and one Shooty army, although they can both be outfitted to do both.

As i said above choose the army with the models you like best, and learn to play with them you will enjoy the army more.

That was possibly the best summary of 40K I ever read.

You ought to add that SMs are covered in skulls and rosettes, and Chaos are covered in skulls and spikes.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

so if your thinkign about nids make sure you dont want to have any individual unique characters

If you stick with SM you can still go for a CC army, plus there is no need to stay 'loyal' mine have gone renegade since I started collecting and litter thier uniform and vehicles with all sorts of xeno stuff and things meant to generate even more fear than usual.

And if you play a specific Space Marine Chapter, make sure you want unique characters
that everyone else will be using.

You could easily give Tyranids a "flavor" or character by modifying your leaders into and
hybrids or something.

Shooting and hitting hard?

I think you want to trade in that 40k stuff for Warmachine, my friend.

Big, stompy steam-powered robots (powered with STEAM!) that can shoot and whomp.

Great shooty units. And 'urty units.

Ninjas
Pirates
Cowboys
Monkeys (well, Ogres and trolls, they're like monkeys, right?)

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

If you think you'd enjoy Chaos Marines, then do that, as you can just repaint your existing Marines as Chaos. Or you can play them as Black Templars, which have a similar close-combat focus.

Of the three that you mention, Chaos and Marines have the newest Codices, so I'd focus on them.

Make a DIY chapter with the mini styles you want. Then you can play them as any type of marine or chaos.

Eh, while unique characters are cool.. I don't really care for them. A nameless unit that came from no where is just fine.

I was talking to some guys at the LGS today and one of them mentioned White Scars and how they can effectively use bikes well. Due to the outflanking special rule, I was curious, does Chaos have any Chapters or anything like that? I really like the concept of bikes, especially the image of a SM cleaving through someone with a chain-sword on a bike. If Chaos had such an ability to field bikes as effectively I would definitely pick them in a heart-beat. [Its my understanding bikes aren't that great? ]

Again thanks for all the posts, the feedback is valued greatly.

Chaos has Legions, which are what Chapters used to be.

Yeah, Bikes are kind of overpriced, and old models.

I think you'd do best to just figure out what looks coolest to you, and then go forward on that basis.

Yea'. Well, I think I've come to the conclusion that I want to try out Blood Angels. I really like the idea of Assault Squads and I like the color scheme a lot. Thanks again for all the interesting/funny feedback. I'll probably have a blog up sometime soon.

Thanks again, you all were a great help.

Ah, the Blood Angels. When I played 2nd edition by the light of my whale-oil lantern I played them and they kicked much butt, plus they looked uber-cool. They've kept all the models for their characters (including Dante, unfortunately) so I think you made a great choice. Typical SM hardness mixed with a focus on HTH. Have fun!
