Hey folks!

Just got back from LA Gamesday. It was, of course, a good time to be had by all. I thought the 40K Big Game was a little weak this year, but there were some very good club tables and the Golden Daemon entries were top-notch.

The seminars didn't really break any new ground on the rumors front with a few exceptions:

- Phil Kelly confirmed he is working on Planetstrike, but he does not have any confirmations for the timeline

- The Valkyrie is (supposedly) still a possibility, but not definite. Phil said there are no technical problems with doing it, due to the scanning technology they now have, but there is a question of whether it would be worth putting into production.

- A 40K scenario book is being considered by GW. There's been thought about releasing a compendium of additional missions and possibly some campaign materal, but no work has yet begun.

HOWEVER, by far the biggest rumor came from the Black Library presentation. An audience member asked if BL had ever considered doing any screen-plays, shorts, etc. The presenter had a long pause, then replied with something to the effect of "Well, hypothetically, there could maybe be a direct to DVD release of some kind of CGI movie with Ultramarines next year. Maybe." The long and short of it was there is clearly some kind of direct to DVD, CGI 40K movie that is in progress, though the presenter placed massive stress on the fact that it was still not a sure thing and that he could not promise the release date, much less the fact that it would actually be completed (as reflected by anyone that remembers Exile Films' with Bloodquest).

It should be noted that the presenter also said that neither THQ nor the company that did the cutscenes for Dawn of War are involved, but that the movie would be "to that level of quality."

Rather interesting, no?

Interesting. I can't help but wonder if it'll follow the same road as Bloodquest. And think of the level of detail that would have to be done on things like Daemons or Orks. They're going to need a VERY good CGI company.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I predict a lot of bald men, screaming. [/too easy]

I promise you that it will suck. It may also rock at the same time. The fact that they're comparing it, favorably, to video game cutscenes does not encourage me.

I remember seeing the trailer for the Star Wars Cloen Wars animated feature and thought, "Wow, they're advertising a new SW video game at the movies now." I was verys urprised that the lifeless animation was an actual movie!

(Maybe the actual movie was better... The trailer was not good, though.)

Animated might be the best place for a 40k movie as they won't feel the need to do a lot of back story. Of course, without back story it's unlikely to appeal to fans... I'm guessing it will be a very stereotypical 40k story of Space Marines fighting one or more horrible threats to mankind. IG may get a cameo to wet themselves in fear. Eldar may get a cameo to be sneaky bastards.

The bad guy is likely to be Tyranids, Orks, or Chaos, and I'd say the latter two are more likely. Tyranids could end up looking derivative (Alien or SST, take your pick!).

Voice acting will not be award-winning.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

If Ultramarines are involved, I'd say the other side will be 'Nids as this is a fairly classic match up.

40K has great potential for a film, but it's a massive universe now and any movie would have to concentrate on a very small part of it to avoid information overload. for newbies.

I would go with Guard as main characters as people would identify with them more easily (like the marines in Aliens) with a one off action scene involving the Astartes to demonstrate difference between humans and the genetically modified super warriors.

As for bad guys, I'd go for 'Nids or Eldar as the non-40K crowd will know what to expect (i.e. 'Nids are Aliens and Eldar are Vulcans) and won't have to think too much. Orks is asking too much of leap from fantasy to sci-fi for most people, particularly as the fantasy orc themed LOTR is still fresh in people's minds.

Whilst I like to see a plot in most films, I think the first 40K movie would work best as a "cinema experience" like 300 and then build on that for later releases.

Flashman, like you I'd like to see IG be the leads, but I have a feeling it'll be Space Marines because they're more iconic of the setting.

Maybe, just maybe it will fall into the category of "so bad, it's good" but I doubt it. As a test download or buy the Horus Heresy audio book and listen to that for a bit. If you like that you will most likely also like the CGI feature, if not, tough luck kiddo.

Stanley Kubrick read Ian Watson's Inquisitor. It could have been... (true story, btw)

I'd love to see one involving Tyranids that was hand animated to the level that Akira was done. Would be amazing. Which is why it would never happen.

What are you talking about? They're Space Marines, which are heroic. They need to be able to do all the heroic stuff. They fight aliens and don't afraid of anything. -Orkeosarus

Plumbing Stanley Kubrick, by Ian Watson

Upon review, it looks like Watson had GW send Kubrick a bunch of other 40K material, too. Somewhere, in an alternate dimension, there is a very cool Warhammer 40K movie! And I want it!

I had a buddy that had financing and people all lined up for a high grade cgi film based naturally on the space marines. He actually went to GW with the money and backers in hand and with approval to let them have complete overview of the project 2 years (almost 3) ago and was told to basically go a nice warm spot where they don't have ice water. So the odds of seeing a true movie any time soon are so low it's not even funny.
