Akira
Ghost In The Shell
GitS Innocence
Appleseed (the one from a couple of years ago)
Patlabor The Movie

Anything by Studio Ghibli

Those are all movie recommendations.

Ghost in the Shell was the only anime I ever found compelling. Though Akira wasn't terrible either.

Hellsing
13 episodes, great animation, intriguing plot.

I refer to the origional version, not the so called "ultimate" rehash OVA with worse animation and a plot that's been strangled and strewn about the pavement.

Not that the redone hellsing is bad, it's just not IMO, as good...

Definitely want to see the Macross Plus OVA. My #2 anime pick of all time.

Man, that's the joy of Anime! To revel in the complete and utter wastefullness of making an unstoppable nuclear-powered combat andriod in the shape of a cute little girl, who has the ability to fall in love and wears an enormous bow in her hair.

GitS is a rare example of an anime combining action and philosophy, where the philosophy isn't a bunch of pretentious rubbish bunged in to jack up the intellectual credentials. It also looks beautiful and has a great music score. Innocence is an excellent sequel. I haven't seen any of the spin-off TV series.

Jin Roh is good, if maybe a little slow. The end really makes the movie.

Agreed. That last bit, the pseudo-intellectual philosophizing, is usually what turns me off of anime.

The TV series is pretty solid. I watch it when it comes up on Adult Swim. The philosophy is often over-done, but it stays true to the spirit of the movie. Which is all I usually ask for out of a spin-off.

I love Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed: Ex Machina.

Akira is brilliant as well, and it's also nice to see the very beginning of an art movement (before anime had completely evolved into it's own medium).

If you're hardcore into anime (like I'm not), you'll probably like FLCL. Fooly-cooly. Or whatever you want to call it. I see FLCL held in lots of high regard by anime fanatics, I guess due to it's hyper-japanese sense of quirky humor and such. It's just not my thing.

@Killkrazy: all great
@BloodofOrks: Bebop rules

My top pick is Fullmetal Alchemist, followed closely by Princess Mononoke and Ninja Scroll.

FLCL was a very short Manga before it was an anime. I read the Manga and watched the anime, I'm no hardcore anime fan either. But I love it. It asks a few philosophical questions about the human psyche considering betrayal and love but don't dig too deep into them. There isn't really a lot of meat to those parts. Mostly a coming of age/self realization story. The anime kids love it because it's "SUPAR KAWAII!!!1!!" and "DESUDESUDESU Haruka/guitarz is awesomes lawL!"

If you haven't already, Cowboy bebop is not a long series. The movie is ok, but it's supposed to take place somewhere in the middle of the CB story line. It was a good movie but a bit of a let down for me in total.

I second Patlabor. It's very very good. I like how the characters are drawn to actually look Asian.

Edit: Something slightly longer but still as short as Cowboy Bebop and it's movie is Neon Genesis Evangelion. The entire series and the movie. Very good.

You thought Billy Bob didn't do the monk justice? I prefer his voice to the Japanese . He has the kind of voice I'd suspect a monk who is going to attempt to betray me would have.

I'm not sure if its just because it was my first anime, but Vampire Hunter D, is good, if maybe a little dated now. The sequel is better looking, but lacks some of the originals gothic feel. Hey typeline, what time is it by you? Its 2:33 here in Wisconsin

It might be a general disliking of Billy Bob, its been years since I've seen it, I guess I should watch it again

3:39 here on the east coast. I think my computer is using time travel mode or it might be that I'm in Bat Country right now. I'll try to fix it to prevent time paradoxes/bites.

That reminds me about Vampire Hunter D. It was one of my earlier animes as well. I still like it. Has it's charm even though some of it is slightly cliche. Haven't seen the second one.

The action scenes are well done, but the characters kinda feel like their in there for a higher body count.

Dominion was good. However the last episode on my copy of the DVD is all messed up .

Coastal Bliss in the Shadow of Sizewell

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

I have loads of shorts I haven't watched yet, some might be good, some might be awful no idea, but I have around 35 DvD's from Manga Force at home I was just collecting to see what Anime I could put together, but cancelled it for a different collection.
However the six or seven Ghibli films I own so far are watched often, even my two boys (3 & 5) love them especially My Neighbour Toturo and Kiki's Delivery Service. (Although I haven't let them watch Earthsea yet due to the tone in the movie and I won't let them see Grave of the Fireflies or Princess Monoke until they both are much older.)
I think I'm intent on collecting all the Ghibli films eventually, in fact some I've seen on Film 4 such as Nausica and the Cat Returns are both films I'd really like to own eventually.

Regarding other films I also really like GHost in the Shell, Akira seemed a bit, well odd. I also really like an old dodgy film called Guy awakening of the Devil, not for the smut contained in it (which was fleating compared to some ala Urotsukidoji) but the zany characters. The rocket launcher up the skirt of the secondary female character is still one of the funniest things ever, and something I've replicated more than one in tabletop RPG games. Sadly I rented the film yrs ago, so I have no idea if it was worse than I actually remember.

Altough I do like Anime, I haven't seen that many. I really enjoyed Monoke Hime or Princess Monoke as it is called here. Spirited Away was also pretty cool, as was the one with the walking castle, but I don't know the english title of that one.
They're all from the same director if I'm not mistaken.

The original Ghost in the Shell is also pretty cool.

Aye, Spirited Away is in my top ten films of all time, I get all nostalgic whenever I see the train journey, although the boys are a little scared of the witch in charge of the bathhouse.
Howls Moving Castle is also really good, I think Ghibli just have a almost unmeasured ability in crafting wonderful stories, they and Pixar at the moment are my two fave animation studios.
