Currently the law in Britain states that hate preachers who incite violence can be arrested and deported. Quite right too.
New proposals however mean that now merely challenging the British way of life will lead to people being "isolated and publicly rejected".
Now I have little time for anarchists, religious extremists, homophobes and hatemongers but to suggest that challenging the status quo should actually be illegal doesn't sit comfortably with me at all. Of course its being aimed at Muslims (because no other religious groups ever had a go at the gays!) but it all to easy for such legislation to be turned against anyone who has something negative to say about the state.
The quote below quite frankly chilled me to the bone.
"We want to move away from just challenging violent extremism. We now believe that we should challenge people who are against democracy and state institutions".
I can think of plenty of 'State Institutions' I'm not happy with, not to extent I want to blow them up, but this sort of thing could easily lead to the state having license to cart any anyone they feel like.
Anyway I'll get off my now!

They kept talking about isolating certain people for their speach. What does 'isolated' mean?
If it means government action that calls people out and makes life hard for them despite having never committed a crime, that sounds both ineffectual and pretty dangerous in terms of government power.
Surely that kind of pressure has to come from within the Islamic community, then it would be both effective and legal. Government working with the the Islamic community to encourage moderate leaders to speak out against hatemongers seems a much more likely solution.

If thats serious then you are mental. Muslims are normal people. There are no more 'Muslim leaders' than there are 'Christian Leaders'. Should all Christians be judged by the actions of those who tout themselves as Christian leaders? It's just a religion, not a military allegiance, or football team or whatever you are imagining. It's just something you pick up as part of your background, Muslims are just like everyone else - but with more Hummus, lemon, kebab etc.
In Response to the original point of the thread. Seeing as we fail to enforce the laws we do have, adding more is sort of meaningless. As things stand in England punishments are all over the place anyway, violent crimes, including manslaughter (I've watched too many American cop shows to remember what we actually call it), get softer punishments than others half the time.

Mrs ex-head of MI5 came out today and said the anti-terror laws have gone too far.
She made the very good point that if what terrorists want to do is destroy our way of life (freedom, privacy, the rule of Habeus Corpus, etc,) that is exactly what a lot of anti-terror laws do. So they are winning.

The UK is rapidly becoming a bastion of Orwellian state control of the people.
The Home Secretary's latest jolly wheeze is to create a new type of police force, answering to her rather than a non-governmental authority, equipped with similar powers of search and seizure to the HM Customs. (The Customs have much wider S&S powers than the regular police.)

Not so specifically but there is a law against taking pictures that police officers think might be helpful to terrorists.

Shuma, I'm getting pretty tired of you coming on every thread that mentions England and having a dig. How long have you actually spent living in this 'hole'? From your posts I'd wager your only experience of the country is what you read on the interwebs every time New Labour proposes something daft. I've spent the entirety of my life in the beatific (Lonely Planet named Great Britain the most beautiful island on Earth), cultured and humour filled land of Albion, and I wouldn't live anywhere else. Your cheap jibes are childish and rude (what else would I expect from an American... ), and I'd appreciate if you kept your remarks constructive. I've mentioned this before, but still you persist in your attacks, it's rather tiresome.
On topic: Vote Lib Dem guys, please. A hung parliament leading to a Lib/Lab coalition is the best chance the UK has for a free and prosperous future, just look at all the good done in Scotland when the Liberals were given a snippet of power.

Only Rock salmon, which is dogfish.
Cod is traditional in England, and Haddock is traditional in Scotland.
You can get those other fish in the UK and different kinds of fish too at fishmongers.
Other things you get at fish and chip shops are sausages, saveloys, cod roe, and pies.
