When I get my Tax rebate this year I’m thinking of buying one of those mini laptops for about £200-300 does anyone know which is the best one. I’ve never owned a laptop before what should I be looking for?

Check out these article sreviews and follow up some of the links. Do a bit of reading around on sites like Kotaku.

The Acer Eee series seems to be very popular. Someone I know at work has got one and is pleased with it. He has the Linux version, which works tons better than the Windows version and is cheaper. The downside is you either need to stick with the built-in applications or get a bit of Linux knowledge to help you add anything else.

Arguably though, the point of a Netbook computer is just to do browsing, email and basic word processing. Why would you try to do graphics on a 10-inch screen, for example?

To my mind getting any kind of computer for under £300 is amazing.

Been shopping for one of these myself for my mothers birthday. The Samsung NC10 seems to be, from the hundreds of reviews I've read, by far the best affordable mini laptop/netbook. In terms of spec, battery life, ports, keyboard etc.

bear in mind at the moment your still not going to get a netbook which you can play video games on if that's what your thinking.

I like the Acer one, the Eee doesn't seem to have much storage.

It'll be quite capable of running the games I play most. I have a fetish for late 80s and early 90s arcade games and 16bit classics. They'll run fine on it.
