I am planning on starting a Death Skullz Ork army for my DofE (Duke of Edinburgh) award, but before i started i was going to make 3 stompas (1 GW and 2 scratch-built), but as all the bitz websites (bitz-box, warstore) do not have the required bitz (rhino sides, sensors and battlewagon kaptins) i have decided to postbone their construction.

My question is this:
Would it be wise to buy the units that I like the look of (Lootas, Grots, Nobs) before buying the codex, and manipulating my army to fit around these models?

I am asking as am only 15 and so do not have that much time/money and so have to buy stuff NOW as it was my birthday last sunday.

Thanks in Advance

Have you at least looked through someone elses Ork codex? If you buy based on how you like the way they look, you may not buy in quantities large enough to make a difference. You may want to peruse a couple of the army list threads and get a sense for what kind of a list you wnat to build first.

I'm doing that as well, just building around what I like that is. It works fine, and since you don't have the money for a huge army, why not get what you like, cause thats what you're going to be looking at exclusively for a while.

"I.. I know my time has come" Tethesis said with a gasp, a torrent of blood flowing from his lips.
"No! Hang on brother!!" Altharius could feel the warmth slip away from his dear sibling's hands

Tethesis's reached out his bloodied arm to Altharius's face.
"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

Yeah, it goes under the skills category of "Wargaming" one of the requirements is to make a complete army list, and it's the perfect excuse to start an army

I have no idea what this award is but if you can get an award for doing something with regards to Warhammer, that is AWESOME.

Lootas are good. Grotz are essenial, Nobz are a solid choice.

I would say go for it, but still get the Codex first. Can't write yer list without after all! Buy the book, give it a damned good read, see what jumps out at you as cool.

I wouldn't say grots were essential. Very little in that codex is really essential- you can do Boyz, you can do Nobz, you can do lots. Ask the staff to help you out. I bet they will.

Do you own the game? if notthen AOBR is a good starting point, and gives you some marines to sell on. (and a dread to convert or sell) as for the codex, i'd say get it before you spend too much, but you don't need it from the offset.

Yes, as my sig says i have a 1500+ Eldar and AOBR marines and orks, but I want to expand the ork section.

Its like scouts, you have to do a 40 mile hike over two days, and 3 months of volunteering, physical activity (rowing), and a skill (wargaming)

To quote Eric Cartman its "SO Totally Awesome"
