I just realized...um how hsa the Imperium survived so long after the Emperor got screwed? I mean people getting killed for "Heresy" Imperial Guard soldeirs being sent as cannon fodder not to mention the incompetence of the High Lords.

They didn't "need" the emperor as such, they just didn't die as quickly while he was in charge. now he's set down all the rules for their existence, and now they have the space marines to take care of them, imperial citizens are pretty safe without needing the emperor to get off his throne. that, or mass breeding programs, that always works.

Because other than the Orks and Nids, humankind breeds so damn fast, relative to the other races. Plus there's hundreds of billions of us, scattered across hundreds of thousands of worlds. Even with all the grimdark that happens, there's still a gakload of us left to keep the Imperium populated. That, or have mass breeding programs, as mentioned.

Maybe they have planets devoted to breeding people, like a Forgeworld, but for people.

Humanity didn't just survive with the Emperor; they retook hundreds of thousands of worlds they lost during the dark age.

40k has a bunch of plot holes, but the Imperium is doing 'ok' because of the tenacity of the human race (in fact that is the driving point time and time again in every novel ever written). And running an Empire of a million populated worlds and untold mining facilities, inhabited moons, thousands and thousands of manned space forts, etc... would take unfathomable brilliance and tons of layers of bureaucracy to even function for a single day, let alone 10,000 years, so the High Lords are in fact far far from incompetent. (just think of your countrie's bureaucracy and government and imagine that times 1,000,000. I would imagine you would be pretty happy if just the garbage was picked up on the appropriate day, let alone everything else) It took an immortal emperor of mankind to reunite mankind and it would take nothing less to complete that quest so hence the 'stagnant' and war filled atmosphere that is the 40k universe as it is told now.

The imperium isn't going anywhere at the moment. It's too damn big to be shifted so easily. (Even without the Emrpah kicking ass)

Imperial Guard numbers in hundreds of billion soldiers so they just send a large number of guardsmen against enemy forces and they mostly die.

Slaanesh says hi

But, if I remember right every planet has to give up 10% of it's population to the Imperial Guard each year, that's how they manage to keep going. There are just that many humans that mass breeding isn't needed. There are also probably a few planets like Cadia, whose entire population is kind of part of the IG.

The Emperor established the Imperium as it is, and the system he put in place can't do much than hold all of His territories until He returns to complete Humanity's conquest of the stars. We can only trust in the Emperor to protect us until that day.

I think that somewhere the eldar come into this. It seems like the eldar also keep humanity from dying considering the fact that they hold off daemons and xenos just like the imperium. Maybe the Eldar and the Humans have an alliance, they just don't kno it.

The Eldar do more to help the Imperium than to hurt them, but they're still rather limited in what they can do by the fact that there's simply so few Eldar left, and they really don't want to put any of themselves in harm's way. I think they mostly try to keep a lid on Daemons and Necrons (which they have a lot of hate for personally).

I think more than anything it's just the incredible size and fanaticism of the Imperium that keeps it alive. Any sensible population would have long since shot themselves in the head as soon as they realize that green space gorillas are driving monster trucks over their armies.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

+2, my good sir.

Really, the Imperium is hanging in there because there's a lot of humans and they breed like rabbits. It's great, because basically, there's enough worlds that the fluff can pretend there are an infinite number. Who cares if we lose a couple hundred thousand worlds, there's always more kicking around.

The Imperium goes on because of the will of the Emperor and the faith of the people in Him. To hold any other opinion is HERESY!!! For having that opinion, you must be cleansed with holy fire!

But seriously, the Imperium goes on because the people really do have immense and unshakable faith in the Emperor, and the fact that even badly injured the Emperor's vast psychic might prevents Chaos from doing a lot of things it otherwise could have (like sending a warp storm to consume Terra, etc.). And because Failabaddon can't get the whole "conquer the galaxy" thing right. He's failed so many times that I actually hold a pet theory that he is really a deep-cover Imperial agent whose job is to infiltrate and control Chaos, in order to ensure that it never succeeds. I theorize that this is why he hasn't become a daemon prince, despite being one of the oldest and most powerful Chaos lords and being pretty much #1 in the Chaos hierarchy besides the actual gods.

Wow, you play to much 40k...

I started a few months ago. I read really fast, and I think a lot. I tend to come up with lots of theories to explain obvious logical inconsistencies in works. In this case, I wondered how Abaddon could maintain control over the Traitor Legions when they will kill their leaders and take over their positions if they are too weak and the fact that he cannot conquer Cadia. The most logical conclusion that I could see was that he simply was trying to fail, as that would allow him to have the strength to control the Traitor Legions while still not succeeding. I remembered he used to work for the Imperium and thought that the most logical reason he would want to fail was that he secretly still maintained his loyalty to the Emperor. It also explains why he would not become a daemon prince, despite the fact that the Chaos gods promote their strongest to that position. He simply does not want it. Why would he not want vast power and immortality? Because he does not want to be corrupted out of his loyalty to the Emperor in the process. Therefore, he tells the Chaos gods that he doesn't want to be a daemon prince.
