Been painting a lot of 40k and that's pretty much all. I've really learned a lot of techniques from the hobby and also researching lots a military modeler weathering. So I'm just trying something a bit different. I found this little guy for $4 bucks on a website. Not expecting much but it was 4 dollars after all. The thing is about 7 inches tall and dwarfs all my GW models. Relatively easy to assemble with some ball and socket joints so you can position it how you like. It was a snap together kit 1/144 scale but I glued it like i would any other model.
I'm going for a real gritty look like military modelers model their tanks. So this is just kind of a cheap alternative to 40k experiment. Here's what I've done so far.
Mr. Surfacer 1000 primer
Air Brushed on the white
Added the sponge weathering in places that seemed right
GW foundation red
Thats it for now. I hope to finish this guy today.

Looks really cool! Good idea on the weathering, it makes the model look gritty and, well, weathered. I'd hurry up and finish it + throw up some more pics though, because right now it looks like your Gundam is wearing red high-heel shoes (To me, anyway).
Is it going to be a proxy model for anything, or are you just posting it for fun? I've seen someone else's work on converting a Crisis Suit to look like a Gundam, and my own buddy was planning on making his suit look more like an anime mech.

I know it's a Strke Dagger, but the paintscheme makes it look like a GM. Are you trying to follow the original colours, or are you giving it your own?
Also, I suggest you try the HG 1/144, or the MG 1/100s if you want some really detailed stuff.

You've convinced me to go pick up a gundam kit from my local Japanese merch store, they look like a lot of fun and VERY different from painting Warhammer.
The weathering is top-notch so far, I'm gonna have to try using a sponge, to be honest, I never thought of that, how dumb am I? XD

@ Locclo; Thanks I'm actually really happy with how the weathering turned out. A lot of Gundams look like they have red high heels... I was thinking of making a proxy tau army. After I finished assemblying him though I don't know. Hes Way big compared to a crisis suit.
@ Fafnir; It is a Strike Dagger. The paint scheme is a GM. The reason is... I love the Gundam series, but only the Universal century not all the other ones for the most part. I originolly wanted to make a tau proxy army modeled after Chars counter attack, with all crisis suits being Jegans, The HQ crisis suit being the NU Gundam and the broad sides being the Gm cannons. After pricing all the models It was out of my price range for an army I couldn't always use. So I saw the Strike dagger was $4 so I got a bunch of them. I chose them because they looked a lot like a GM and they were the best bang for the buck. My HQ suit is a suit from the 00 Gundam that looks almost exactly like the original gundam. I'll just have to convert up my broad sides out of strike daggers. For infantry I was just going to run guardsmen and paint them in the feddy ground infantry uniforms from 08th ms team. on the devil fish I'm truly stumped though. If I ever just got one to paint I would buy the 1/100 scale and more than likely get a lot higher grade kit.
@ Ziggy Da' Goon; Thnx! Glad you like it.
Painted all the joints and mechanical du dads
At this point I painted it in Gloss clear... I was going to try a technique I had read about. I was pretty nervous. Didn't want to mess up the model.
The technique is to take oil paints (standard artist variety) and add little dots of color to the model then take turpentine and bleed out the little color spots. It adds realism and weathering as well as adding more complexity to the image. I used ocher, burnt umber, black, white.
After finishing the oil treatment. I re cleared over the model in flat clear.
The model is actually done now. I will post the finished results here shortly. The last coat of flat clear is drying now. Automatically Appended Next Post: Done! Woot!

Understandable. I'm a Universal Century/Turn A Gundam man myself.

I would love you oh so very much. Seriously, it's a good thing I'm about to go do my laundry.

Although that's also a great idea...
on the devil fish I'm truly stumped though.
May be worthwhile to check the EX series of models. They're not exactly to scale, but they have a bunch of classic Feddie and Zeon ships.
If I ever just got one to paint I would buy the 1/100 scale and more than likely get a lot higher grade kit.
HGUC 1/144 and MG 1/100 are some of the most detailed and best to paint. Non-grade 1/100s and normal HG 1/144 are okay, but not nearly as good as HGUC and MG. PG 1/60 tend to have a tonne of detail, but the older ones havn't aged well. Also, they're not that great for painting, since they have so much detail in the mold itself that paint really isn't necessary.

@ Einhänder; You simply take a piece of fine sponge (like in the back of a blister pack) and dip it in a paint that you want to look like the undercoat and dab it on. This makes the top layer of paint is chipping. I used vallejo German C. black. Use any darker color you want really. (chaos black, scorched earth, codex gray) P.S. don't know if you know this but Einhander was a most excellent game for playstation 1 back in the day. I know its German for something else though.

I was just bored and wanted to paint something different. (as the title says) When I start on this project seriously I'll make a project log for it. Here is the proof that it will be an army some day.
@ Fafnir; We'd get along great! haha.
@ Sidstyler; It turned out adding a new dimension to the model. It's very subtle but overall a great effect, I would recommend it. More added steps though.

Well, 'Einhänder' is the german word for 'one-handed-sword' or 'single handed sword'. The words 'Zweihänder', 'Bidenhänder', 'Bidhänder' stand for double-handed-swords, this information just on the fly...

@ Ghosty; The models I got aren't that possible. However I bought the $4 ones. The $10 dollar ones are highly possible. I got my models from www.Gundamstoreandmore.com
@ Platuan4th; I agree, Wing not so good, G BLOWS! Universal Century for the win.
@ Cannerus_The_Unbearable; I know thats how their portrayed... I think they just don't want to spend the extra animation money to dirty them up.
@ BOSS_PIMPALOTZ; Thanks, I hope to start on the project soon.
@ The Chaos-Kraut; I knew I'd heard that word before. Thanks
I built 8 more suits to be Gm's last night. (crisis suits with sheilds and plasma guns)

Hey... I liked Wing. The invincible suits were just because the animation budget was limited, and Duo and Trieze are some of the best characters in Gundam history.
Seriously though, Trieze is god.
I just said that I'm primarily a UC man. War in the Pocket is genius.
Although Turn A is far better then any other Gundam series out there.

Recommend MS IGLOO (and sequels) for all Gundam fans. The CGI is kind of weak initially (MS IGLOO, MS IGLOO: Apocalypse), but by MS IGLOO 2: The Gravity Front, things are looking pretty good.

Been working on my infantry. They're painted after the ground pounders from 08th MS team. I only have their skins, guns, and bases and these guys should be done. A little iconography here and there as well.
