For me it was FFXI though starting fresh at this point is a difficult prospect.

Surprisingly enough, World of Warcraft isn't too bad; while there are always pricks (And if you play on a PVP server, you'll see what I mean) a lot of people are pretty understanding of new players. I can't say much at endgame as I'm a bit of an altoholic, but most players are pretty good-natured. I don't know if it's the best one, though - Barrens chat is pretty notorious, and I've seen people just lose it if a raid goes badly (There's an animation on YouTube where one guy's raid wiped on Onyxia, and the leader just went berserk).

This is simply not true. In the many years I played WoW, I don't think I was able to use the auction house without the wonderful game of {this item} in your butt, Chuck Norris jokes, or some other absolutely worthless conversation going on. It seemed that the average wow player was 13, or wanted to act like it online. Don't get me wrong, that can be quite fun for brief periods of time, but it was one of the worst MMO communities I've ever been a part of.

If you're looking at MMOs solely from the quality of their communities, I think you'll find the less PVP oriented ones will be for you. I recommend Lord of the Rings, but I haven't played too many MMOs. It's just the best community I've seen. From the crafting level to the quest lines, it is built to encourage players to establish ties and invest in the world and each other. It works. I was a horrible Barrens chatter in WoW, but for some reason I've never felt the need to start absurd jokes or topics in Lord of the Rings. Naturally, YMMV.

Wow, you must have had some bad luck with WoW (Or I had some really good luck with it). I've always been with players that are fairly civil and intelligent, though I admit I don't spend time in the AH. There are the rare idiots of Trade chat, but they're pretty few and far between. What server(s) did/do you play on? Now I'm curious.

Shadowmoon primarily, but also... hmm... Dark Iron and one other one, although its name escapes me. If you stayed out of the cities it was much nicer, but somehow I ended up spending tons of time in the main cities.

And the game has more bugs than the average nid player

Lets see

Warhammer Online was cool.

WoW is a haven for elitiest pricks that only care about endgame.

FF11 was cool, not sure if it's still a hot topic though as I played years ago.

DDO Dungeouns and Dragons online is a blast and best of all free.

Eve Online is certainly the most unfriendliest one of the lot. Everyone including some of your own corp mates (sometimes) are out to get you. Its all about the ISK and territory which leads to greed.

The game sucks away your life like no other. Anyone want to trade my account for a 40k army?

How is Final Fantasy XI, anyway? I always wanted to play it, but never really had the funds (As a young, out-of-work college student, mind) to start it up. The only reason I would consider not doing it is knowing that FF14 is on the way, and I'm worried that I would start up 11 just as SE moves on to 14.

Guildwars has a great community

Probably because all the jerks left around 2 years ago when they got fed up of no new content since for the last 3 years there has been no new content other than holidays and balencing as the devs are working on a sequel ).

Back in it's early days, Planetside had an awesome community. Lots of camaraderie. Now, it doesn't have much of a community left...

I don;t think you'll find a great community in any wildly popular MMO. Internet anonymity, plus competition for either loot, or in PvP is just going to lead to problems.

Cozy cockpit of an Archer ARC-5S

My few months on WoW were most pleasant, where total strangers would help you if you screamed "HELP ME" loud enough. Heh, I remember a quest where I had to fight some guy outside a tavern and I couldn't best him, but thankfully a mob of fellow players jumped in at the right moment and helped out. They even applauded me after I gave them a bow.

WAR also has a nice community, though it might've had something to do with me being a Witch Hunter and frequently travelling back to the newbie zone to get tome unlocks and other things. Always fun to see a group of newbies come over and "petition you kindly" into helping them fight the chaos warriors until the giant arrives.

But again, it depends on the servers right.

I'm not exactly a fan of WoW, but I did have a pleasant time while I played it. My guild was very helpful and supportive, and even randies were fun to do dungeon runs with.

WoW is a really "balanced" MMO , here is why.

It is very true , just like every game with a community there will be arrogant players / guilds
may it be PVP guild or PVE guilds.

But the good thing about WoW is, if you can always have your band of friends you can assemble a guild.
And very often you guys can do instance / raids together , at your own pace. Without having anything
to do with the arrogant guilds.

And if your friends dont like PVE stuff , you can always do battle grounds together.

There is always things to do tailored to your taste :3

Unless you don't like cartoony MMOs. Warcraft in general became very over-the-top when WC3 was released. It's when the huge pauldrons and disproportionate characters began to appear.

Which is quite interesting. WoW has been out for many many years.
My friends has gone , and played for a good 2-3 years and i absolutely refused to due to the Disney look. ( i was used to Lineage 2 )
But been sick of the constant battle against botters , i caved in and let my friends take me around the first dungeon ( forgot , the one by storm wind )
upon receiving free shinny green gears i was hooked. And very quickly caught up / and beat most of the server within a year ( well atleast arena , raid wise was sort of
a compromise between arrogant guilds will let me raid if i carry their arena teams )

Yeah, WoW isn't for people who don't like the whole 'grindgrindgrindgeargeargear' thing. The game gets fun once you have top-tier stuff, but it's awfully dull trying to get there.

I understand how they try to balance PVP and PVE. i think lvling is easy , and progression is only as hard as the raid members that doesnt try.
I guess... "you are only as strong as your weakest link" sums up exactly what Raids are like.

Though im extremely infamous across few pvp servers -_- but i dont have attitude! i just... need gold to repair my gear!

Omadon's Realm

Everquest 2 (I was on the Antonia Bayle RP server) was an amazing community back in the day, it's been getting fairly quiet recently but there is a new expansion out atm and that bolsters population.

I'd agree with Everquest 2 and Lotr from my brief times there.

Another would by City of Heroes/Villians, a long term established community, eager to keep new blood interested in playing the game.

On a side note, WoW does have issues, although thanks to the numbers, you'll have a bigger percentage of trolls/misfits anyways.

My main advice is ignore whats said in trade, that is where hope goes to die tbh, and any real idiots are going to be there as they know its got the largest auidience for their inane ramblings.

To really judge a realm you need to travel in the wilds, and see how folks are acting out on the questing trail. In my experience most of that has been very pleasent, and the run in with the odd muppet is a rariety not a common situation.

There is only one MMO and her name is World of Warcraft. Unless you play DaoC.

City of Heroes is actually fun, too but only if you are playing with malf. I don't know if that is a "community" or not.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
