I'm planning on getting an ipad in the near future and i was wondering from a legal standpoint is it legal if i scan my own codex (whitch i paid for) and then used that in games rather than actually lug around codices with me ?

You mean like making an electronic copy for back-up purposes? No problem there.

It's when you start making them remote, electronic back-up copies that other people store on their equipment that you get into trouble.

GW seems to only give permission to photocopy certain items from books, such as templates or character sheets. If it says so in fine print on the page with those things, you are allowed to, if it doesn't? Don't! You're committing a crime against the hobby you stealing git!

It all depends on if it falls into "fair use" in the UK, Copyright law is different for every country. I doubt anyone (other then GW) would have a problem with this, unless you are playing at a tournament.

I juast took a look , its completely illegal on the gw legal section it says as below
- Make any direct copies and/or scans of Games Workshop publications, images, or other materials. This includes any Out-o- Production materials, web site materials, and White Dwarf articles. We would however suggest that you produce your own materials (as long as you follow the other requirements of this policy). so it'sa no

In Canada it is fair use and legal to do so. I have already converted most of mine over for both fantasy and 40k. I also have begun the practice of never buying hard copy books. I only buy pdf's for my games from online sources so that I don't even have to worry about it. For example I buyy all of my Dark Heresy, Deathwatch and Rogue Trader books (WH40k RPGs) from rpgdrivethru.com. Its so much handier I find to have just an iPad with everything I need on it, than carrying a ton of books from place to place. Plus all of the other things I can do with the iPad while there.

DQ:80+S+++G+MB++I+Pw40k96#++D++A++/sWD-R++++T(T)DM+

Note: D+ can take over 12 hours of driving in Canada. It's no small task here.

GENERATION 5: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

Are what level do you determine what remote is for a file? Technically by definition storing it electronically could be considered remote, as well as putting it onto another device such as a tablet.

Well...GW's legal section is itself kind of a grey area. Of course they're gonna tell you it's illegal to do anything they don't like. They can tell you it's illegal to play anything other than their games, but that doesn't make it true.

In the US this would be considered fair use. That doesn't mean you won't get kicked out of the store. I suggest if you go this route, you also have the paper books in a bag with you so you can show you do own them, or in the worst case, fall back on them.

It would be considered accessing it on a different system or location then it is stored. So if I was running a webserver, or ftp on my home computer, and accessed the file at a friends place, or at the FLGS.

If you want to scan the books you paid for and put them on your iPad or similar device, go for it. GW isn't going to sue you for it even if their fine print says you can't, because how will they even know? They would really only have a problem with it if you were doing that and then making your scans available for other people over the interwebs. If it's for your own use, go for it.

The only time it might be an issue is if you play in a GW store and the employees are major wienies about it, or go to a major tournament where you should bring your hard copy books, but if you're just playing in your own gaming group or a friendly local shop, and someone complained about it, then they're prolly someone that's not worth your time to play with anyway.

I would view it the same as copying tapes or CD's, it's only likely to get picked up on if you walk around exclaiming, "look at my iPad!" while holding it in the air.

If its a store you are going to, I'd take the book with you the first few times, if they question it then whip the book out. I doubt the staffer is going to be enough of a jobsworth to know the exact GW copying policy and stop you from using it..

If GW said I couldn't use my scanned codex i'd tell them to get fethed and show them the receipt in my wallet.

Not to mention, the next time you're at Starbucks, when you whip out your Ipad, people will crinkle their noses because it "smells like gamer".

No iPad and I maybe go in a Starbucks once a year, but I do care about getting my techy toys all gummed up. I barely put up with my 'default' of having my desk on the opposite wall from my 'workbench' for modeling.

I was going to say what Ouze said. And Jihadnik made me laugh. Nice.

I personally see no wrong in scanning your own book, and using a phone or iPad or the like in that way. If its easier on you then who cares. That and no one can argue when you say I didnt bring my codex. But yea, expect to be looked down upon in certain places for it. I mean Ive heard stories of people painting in a GW with non citadel paints, and were asked to leave, so who knows

Despite my concerns above about combining iPads and gaming, I really wish GW would realize that the only way to realistically deal with the existing availability of scanned books online is to make reasonably-priced PDF editions available and hope gamers will favor well-done 'official' editions over scans of dubious quality. They can't compete on price, but they can compete on quality.

While this makes absolutely perfect sense, the odds on GW doing something like this is probably somewhere near 0!

Makes sense to me. Codices may be $30 a pop, but it's still easier to replace than an iPad.
