Tail-spinning Tomb Blade Pilot




This weekend was The good, the Bad, the Ugly IV. It is a tounament with a twist. The Good codices (All marine variants, guard, hunters) Bad (Crons, DE, Chaos variants) and Ugly (ork, bug, tau, elf) would each essentialy be on the same team. Every round you will never fight someone from your faction, and the tourney organizer adds up all the totals for each faction giving a winning faction. Of course, there are the normal individual tourney awards as well.

Well my favorite two armies are both bad so I knew which faction Id be playing. Between my crons and deamons I think I will be bringing deamons to Adepticon so I could look at this tourney as a "dress rehersal". There were a lot of really good players here. I wanted to do my best to drag down some Wolf and Guard players, maybe Bad could pull it off.

Game 1 Postings were up and I am playing .........Wolves. Not a huge shock, but one of the players I know from Madison so we know each others lists/tricks.

Terrain- was a few scattered area terrain pieces (8" x 12") and a large church in the center of the board (Played as ruins since top was removable)

I lose the roll off and he has me drop so he can react and come on the board edge.

Waves

This game Since I would be landing and he could react, I needed resiliency, and speed. I did not want that GUO on th board since Jaws was coming in so he went to the 2nd wave.

Hey I get it. Drop Crushers in the middle of the table to the left of the church in area terrain. Fiends behind, and in front, grinder on his own on the other side of the church to keep him honest.

HIS TURN 1.

Pod comes in and lands near the grinder. His raider comes in in front of the fiends. His fangs and rhino come in the center. He blows my grinder away with a combi melta, Not much else.

My 2
1 Screemer unit comes in, plagues are in. Screemers come in off crusher icon. Fiends spread out to screen crushers (I did not want Ragnar geting the charge off on those crushers with furious charge). Othr fiends move into the church ruins. Plagues drop near an objective..

His 2
Land Raider advances 6" and Ragnar jumps out partially in terrain. They unload on the crushers, so I know his intentions. Everything else opens up on the fiends to clear the way, and three drop and its enough to get at the crushers. A new drop pod arrives and unloads on the fiends in the church, killing a couple. Ragnar and his men charge in and he rolls a "1,1" for charge distance. Ha....double ones, more like double rainbow. Dodged a huge bullet. sitting 2" from Ragnar.

My 3
Screemrs hit the Land Raider and blow it up. Crushers and fiends hit Ragnars squad, kill a few, and break the squad. Not only that he gets away so I can just escort him off the board. Fiends in the church hit the freshly arrived pod killing 5 or so. He fails morale, is caught, and looses a couple more to combat res. Horrors also landed but were going to do nothing but look for objectives. Herald of Tzeen. Pops the speeder.

His 3 Rhino gets immobilized with the Rune Priest standing at the rear hatch. He moves the priest and grey hunter unit but gets double "2's" so his priest ant get the jaws shot he wants. Fangs start putting more wounds into the crushers. I am down to 3 or 4 crushers now. He sends his original drop squad into relive their dying drop pod brethren and they kill the fiends, but not before one of his two squads was destroyed. Ragnar falls back but not much putting some shots into the fiends killing 2 more.

My 4 Rest of my army arrives. I drop the GUO to go fight the drop pod gang. The deamonettes land behind the Long Fangs and should hit next turn. Screemers kill a razorback. Crushers advance on his grey hunters in the open.

His 4 Out of desperation all shots go into tthe crushers and his grey hunter squad charges them. He is down to 2 grey hunters from the squad and I am down to 2 crushers and the herald. Most are wounded. His drop squad dives into the church.

My 5 Deamonttes hit the fangs but only kill 2. Crushers clean up the grey hunters. GUO doesnt move very quick towards the church. Screemers are on pod duty blowing one up.

His 5. Deamonettes leave one fang alive. Rune Priest charges a screemer squad killing them. Bearers and horrors are spreading out on objectives.

We roll to see if the game ends and it does not.

My 6
GUO fails to charge the last grey hunter squad, demonettes kill the last fang, Crushers kill the immobile rhino.

His 6 He runs over to an objective with his grey hunter squad and since time is short we call the game.

He has one objective and I have 3. I look closer and one of the objectives was sitting in the open 8" or so from my plaguebearers and I easily could have stretched out to snag it. It had blended in with the terrain and I just didnt even realize it was so close.

I get quarters and kill points.

I get 18 out of 24 and I left those 2 points on the table.

During the break one of the guys I rode up with said he also had 18 points. I now had a sneeking suspicion that we would be playing. Now I was really regretting that objective I missed; since there were 52 players I figured I would be playing someone with the same score. Him and I have a bit of a rivalry. Although its not much of a rivalry as he had won our last three games. He plays a shooting mech guard list that is just brutal to face. Its a toned down version of the list he won Ard Boyz with this summer.

Pairings for the next round are up, and I see Kohl smile and he looks at me and says you and me table 32. I roll my eyes and head over to check out the terrain. I look at the board and my heart sinks. The board is a planet strike variety. Lots of bastions and a landing pad. Some barricades around the bastions but no real area terrain. I usually use cover to move up against the guard but there was none on the table, Also deepstriking into those bastions was going to be a real pain in the @$$. I wasnt going to roll over though as I was going to make him earn this round and we would just have to see how the points break down.

Game two had me facing IG and I was trying to come up with a way to use the LOS terraiin and my army to get at his army.

I win roll off and choose to go second.

He places my objective in the open so it would be hard to dodge his guns. I placed his near a building to keep his los only facing forward for troops protecting it.

He deploys heavy on the side of the board with his objective and surges forward waiting for my drops.

My 1. I usually dont weight my halves but in this case I risked it since my reserve rolls were at -1, and you need that pressure on the guard or its a short game.
I get the preferred wave. Crushers go front and center,run to grab some cover on the frot couple crushers, and some of the rear crushers grabbed cover. Fiends dropped on the extreme flank he was not deployed in figuriing LOS could be an issue. Screemers dropped behind builings to not get shot but could strike next turn. GUO landed about 10" in front of the main part of his army daring him to shoot him. Well, Ive done all I can do, now lets see how I hold up to those guns......

His 2. He unloads both vendettas, plasma chimera, into my GUO. When the smoke cleared I had taken three wounds, but was alive. Fiends took some shots but only 3 went down. His 10 man squads in the open fan out and make a human sheild for the tanks. Screeemers take a few shots but only 1 goes down. Crushers get everything else but saves are holding, and I take 3 or 4 allocated wounds.

My 2 Nothing dies and I have to destroy what I can. I roll reserves and out of 5 units I get 0. Crushers kill one human shield unit. Both fiend units hit the other, killing all human shields. Screemers hit a chimera near the crushers but only immobilize it and knock off a turret. Other screamer unit hits the psy. choir chimera, wrecks it and pins the psykers. GUO wrecks the plasma chimera, also pinning the squad.

His 3 He fires vendettas at GUO and only manages a wound more. Everything fires at the crushers that can and he kills 4 of them. Small fiend squad is killed. Screemers near crushers are reduced to 1. Lone screemer kills his wounded chimera.

My 3. I get the deamonettes only. They land on a hill and I only get 1" for the run roll leaving them dangerously clumped. 2 remaining crushers hit and immobilize a vendetta. Screemer hits the demolisher for a free hit and I pen it. I roll a ...."1". Well at least it wont shoot this turn. Other screemer squad immobilizes/stuns the other vendetta. Last fiend unit hits a squad in the open for a kill point. GUO hits pinned plas. squad, kills only three, they break and get away.

His 4 Crushers are wiped out with the exception being the herald with just a wound left. GUO gets plasma'd in the face as the squad he broke fires while they run. Fiends get a couple shot. Blast markers rain down on my deamonettes on the hill across from his army. 7 remain. Herald finishes off the vendetta. Screemer on demolisher is shot dead. Other screemers are assaulted by the psychic choir and die.

My 4. Plaguebearers arrive and land nead my objective, Grinder arrives and lands behind a building after scatter. Herald arrives and immobilizes a chimera. Herald goes after command chimera and stuns it. Fiends Kill an immobile chimera. Deamonettes run up to the objective in the center hoping to place the horrors there next turn.

His 5. The threats against his heavy flank is gone, but he has been pinned back. My fiends are cleaning up on the other flank. He now is focused on long ranging my troop squads into denying me points. Plague bearers take shots but I cant go to ground till they are near an objective, but luckily they survive. One deamonete remains, but its the most important one, the icon.

My 5 Grinder and herlad assault a squad in the open. Fiends assault his command squad but the last three wounds hit me and I die. Horrors drop into center objective and run to spread out to minimize blast damage. Plaguebearers spread out to grab another objective, but they can now go to ground and get a 3+ cover.

We roll and the game does not end.

His 6. He bolts a chimera at the center objective but he immobilizes it on a barricade. His shooting kills all but three horrors.

My 6. Grinder hits the immobile chimera blowing it up. Squad is placed in the crater an inch from my horrors putting them more than 3" from the center objective. We roll and the game ends.

I have 2 objectives to his 1.

He has victory points, I have kill points.

I score 14 he scores 13, but out of 24. I think we both took each other out of the running for best overall, but it was an awesome job.

Truly a just braving the firepower and hoping for the best when I hit his tanks. It worked out this time. The screemers and fiends really worked well in the los blocking terrain. That really had a lot to do with my victory.

I have 32 out of 48 going into the last round. I draw someone I dont know, which is a good thing and he has....wolves. Oh well. Wolves it is.

My final game was against another space wolf player. He had a fairly standard internet list, even though predictable, still tough to take out.

Mission

Crazy - fanasy style deployment that randomizes where everything goes. I get no effects since I am playing deamons, he will be scattered about in his deployment zone.

Primary - On turn 4 roll to determine primary, could be terrain grab, get scoring to cneter of table, or kill all HQ.

2ndry - Have most troop units within 12" of any living HQ

He has his wolf squad and troops in one corner, and his fangs on the other side of the board. We roll off and he chooses to go first.

His 1. He runs all units towards each other closing the gap with the fangs essentially in the center of the board.

My 1. I get primary again and I land the Crushers dead center of the board to put pressure on the fangs. Fiends land behind to support but scatter 10" backwards. Other fiends and GUO land to put pressure on his small troop squads. Screemers land and relax.

His 2. Scouts come in and he has them move on near the fiends with the GUO. Small Grey Hunter squad and scouts shoot pistols and assault the fiends wiping my fiend unit completely out. He has 2 remaining wolf guard after divying out the "sergeants" and they unexplicably assault my 7 man crusher squad and die without swinging. Rest of his shooting kills another fiend and wounds a couple crushers. His giant wolf squad is approaching my crushers.

My 2. I get deamonettes and Plaguebearers. I think I have a nice trap for him, he will want to hit the crushers with his wolves, beat them up and I will hit the wolves with my giant 18 deamonette unit and the fiends and this will be over. Deamonettes land and I roll a "1" for running meaning they stay clumped dangerously together. GUO hits the 7 man squad and does 3 wounds. His TH termy in the unit hits all 3 times and I fail all 3 "4+ " rolls. I think no problem, he only has 4 left, Ill grind that squad down eventually. (Note: he assumes that his T hammer auto wounds because he kicked off the banner. I say "why do you auto wound?" He says that if he rolls a "1" he can re-roll it until something other than a "1" appears. I inform him you cant re-roll a re-roll.

His 3. Wolves hit crushers and kill everything but 1 crusher after combat res. I put 1 wound on him in return. He opens up with frag missiles on my poor clustered deamonettes and he hits with 6 of the 7 blast templates killing the whole squad. He charges the GUO with 5 scouts and with the scouts and 3 Grey hunters he puts 2 wounds on the GUO. I fail both saves and both FNP so GUO is wiped out. That was not a good turn.

My 3 Soulgrinder comes in and I land near the wolves in the center( at least I insta death). Fiends hit the wolves and I put every Fiend but 1 on the wounded lord. After all 24 attacks I get 1 invul. save, 2 saves. He gets 1 wound. My crusher is killed along with a fiend. Screemers hit a drop pod.

His 4. We roll objective and it is terrain grab. He fires 4 ML at my grinder. Hits, pens, wrecks. Hmm, usually S8 isnt the most reliable against A13 but those are the breaks. Fiends wound both T wolves once. I hit and run to threaten his fangs.

My 4 Horrors arrive. I shoot the T wolves and kill one of the wolves. Herald arrives and shoots the unit, but does no damage. Fiends hit a fang squad and kill 2. I lose another fiend, droppong me to two and one is wounded.

His 5. Grey hunters get out of a ride and assult my herald. He kills me. He wants to split up his T wolves sending the lord into the horrors and the rest at my fiends and he asks if he could roll all their difficult movement rolls and then split them off in case he doesnt get enough movement and I say No Way. He then kind of panics and stares at the board for a couple minutes. I dont know why as all i have left is 2 fiends, a squad of pink horrors and 4 plaguebearers. I had only killed a handful of grey hunters, fangs, and a t wolf at this point. He decides to split off and assault an unwounded lord into the horrors. As I pile in h says he wanted to hit the horrors and the plaguebearers. I tell him you have to hit the nearest model and make a straight line for the horror, you cant side step into another unit. He says he would have lined up his run better if he had known that. I shrug and say "sorry man". His remaining wolves hit my fiends and wipe them out.

My 5. I can do very little but contest with my 2 remaining units.

We roll to end the game and it continues. I have nothing left to stop him so I concede as time is short.

He scores 23 out of 25, I get 0.

Ugh. That sucked. He was a nice guy who didnt quite have the rules down. As it was his plan was charge the nearest deamon unit with whatever he had, and it worked. He knew to fire frag on my clumped up deamonettes rather than crack, but I just felt like tactically he was making poor decisions, but the dice would bail him out every time. I on the other hand had everything go wrong. It was a bitter pill to swallow after just beating my last opponent. I just felt like anyone could run that wolf list and have success. Its probably sour grapes more than anything, but cheap missiles, charachters more deadly and resilient than a bloodthirster but they can be hidden in a squad, kitted out sergeants for each squad, and the kicker is they have troops deadlier and cheaper than any marine variant. Just a tough codex.

Well enough complaining about wolves, its not going to get me anywhere so Ill have to tweek my list for adepticon. I think I know what changes I want to make and Ill give it a few test runs.

On a side note, the tourney organizer listed how the factions fared and BAD came out on top by a mere 4 pts. It was nice to see the Imperials did not hold the day.

I know what you mean. I've really lost a lot of enthusiasm for tournament play lately. It's not a wargame anymore, it's hitting your opponent with a poorly written codex.

Amen brothers. I hate the SW. I took bugs to just beat on them and suffer when I play against other lists. My 1st round at GBU I played SW and mowed down his units. TW Lords stampeded by poison gants, Fangs jumped by Ymgarls, etc... I my bugs are 4-0 in tourney play against Wolves. My 3rd game I ran up against Wolves again. I figured it would be an easy win again, but the dice Gods had other plans. My Gants put 14 wounds on a GH unit and he made 13 saves. Then they wiped the 18-man Gant squad out dispite needed 5's to hit in combat. I charged a 10-man Grey Hunter unit with a Trygon and 17 genestealers on turn 2. By turn 5 there was 1 Grey Hunter left and no bugs!!! Are you kidding me? Sometimes the dice Gods just turn on you in a mean way.

SW is the Staples Easy Button of 40k. I am quickly losing any respect for anyone with 3 Fangs + T-Wolves.

I think the screamers are invaluable to the deamon army. In defense of GW since the wolf/guard codices, the last 3 codices have been great. I think Bugs and Angels are both fun to play/play against. I am looking forward to the new DH book in a few weeks. I am also wondering if the new Dark Angel, Templar boost could give wolf armies depending on the S8 AP3 shooting a run for their money.

Tough loss in the last round. it is always very frustrating when someone who uses terrible tactics pulls out a win simply because the dice make their units unstoppable.
