Another one for the Wamp Army Challenge, and tbh it was about bloody time that I got cracking on these! So another massive thanks to our resident Mr Motivator over there, Exilesjjb for the inspiration to get on with them.

Yup, some bloody Spesh Puppies, playing in the snow... how original eh?

Still gotta go back over some rather blatant bits (like the Rhino lamps! erk!), and add the freehand icons to it and the Dread mainly, but it'll do for the mo. It'll have to as i've got no time left now!!

Ps - The dread and rhino came out a bit bonky in the pics tbh. They've both been modulated quite a bit, and as well as the airbrush work, all of the panels have been wet-blended from lighter than fortress grey, down to adeptus grey, and despite them looking all pure Codex on my screen look really rather pimptastic irl. Hmm, well as far as grey can ever look pimp I s'pose. Meh. Still looks cool I hope!

Cheers guys, hope you like.

I love the terminator although i feel like i am missing a body laying at his feet. The effect is still very cool and seems to tell a story without even trying.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'll try to get bigger pics of some of the individual dudes so you can see up closer later.

Its Iyanden Darksun, then Bubonic Brown base, highlighted zenithatlly (as per everything else) by mixing progressively more VMC silver grey into the Bubonic. I shade with VMC smoke, then my own dark brown transparent, then Bestial to rust and tone it after the freehand is done.

heheh Yeah mate, there was one of the CSM's dismebered arms on the base too but it's gone walkies... A body was too much, so I decided that it has ended up a good few yards away at the end of a string of entrails and gore!

This is what I kind of hate about Dakka sometimes. Something like this gets posted on here that I really like and think is better than the 'eavy Metal team's paintjobs, but there are a few things I'm not wild about, such as the kind of vanilla look on the vehicles. But the problem is that a lot of stuff that I see on here looks like straight-up gak, and nobody criticizes it (for good reason sometimes, because I don't want them to just give up or kill themselves), so when something like this shows up that's overwhelmingly good, I feel like a douche for pointing out anything I don't like about it.
That said, your painting and weathering techniques are so good they make me wanna slap my mama. I would like to see some more detail and character on the vehicles, and maybe on the Grey Hunters, although I kind of understand with them because they're supposed to be kind of standard. Overall, you need to take over GW's painting department and show them how to do it.

So nice to see actual snow weathering on both models and tanks.

The models are begging for some freehand love, can't wait!

I know exactly where you're coming from mate. And thank you for the compliments!

I do have tendency to utilise understatement alot in all my other art's too, though what you said about the vehicles is purely because I havent finished them yet.
So far fhere is a custom fanged Aquilla on the front of the rhino and a totem on the left side door (out of shot), and I have plans for plenty of freehand yet to come on both the Rhino and dread.
The Hunters probably wont get any more as like you said, they're just grunts basically. Theres no need to overdo them IMO as I like to scale the attention to detail up as the model gets more important.

Thanks for the comments.

Raen wrote:How did you get that shade of blue my friend? im so jealous and would love to know!

Shade of blue? That's a trick of colour theory mate.

They are all painted solely greyscale, from adeptus base, through codex mids, and to fortress, and with some VMC silver grey afterwards to finish the final zenithal highlights. Upper edges are picked with pure VMC silver grey, and finally with skull white. I use a combination of drybrushing (yes, drybrushing! ), zenithal airbrush work, and manual glazing/blending for these.

(Theres also a few different browns in there that I use to shade and weather.)

By using the yellow on the pads (Ragnars co) it tricks the eye into thinking that the armour has a blue tint to it (yellows - blues are good complimentaries). The only blue on them is the eyes which enhances this effect too. The choice of backdrop for the photo also has an effect on them, both through subtly reflected ambient light and again through optical 'psychology' if you will. Even on my shelf where there is no blue surroundings they still look like a blue-tinted grey to the minds eye, despite being pure neutral.

Hope that helps answer your question mate.

Heres a closer look at one...

And I thought i'd bung Nigel in this thread too for the mo...

Another update, these won second place in the Army challenge, behind my Stunties that took 1st.

We're only allowed to have one placing though in the case of multiple wins, so no prizes for these apart from internetz points. Not that im complaining of course, as 1st place bagged me some tasty dwarves painted by Mike McVey!

How did you get the snow effect on the base and armour? Is it just the regular GW snow flock pva'd on?

Cheers guys.

mikeyboyj - The snow is a mix of PVA, bi-carb, and water.

For the first layer I use a high ratio of water to make a slushy snow, then a bit less water to make the clumps, and finally a sprinkle of pure bi-carb to dust it here and there.
