Username login fields on most websites and forums generally aren't case-sensitive; in this case (pun not intended, I swear ) I think it's just that the username field isn't sensitive.

Usernames certainly aren't case sensitive, otherwise you could end up with 2 users with more or less the same name, which would cause no end of confusion, especially on a site like Dakka that has quite high traffic; there would be a significant chance of two people independently coming up with the same user name e.g. bloodangel / Bloodangel.
Making usernames unique prevents this from ever being a possibility.
