First off, you can save the 'White Dwarf sucks' comments. We all know White Dwarf isn't what it once was, but there's still occasionally good content in the mag and it sucks when you can't remember what issue it was in when you want to reference it.
I know GW used to keep a nice searchable index on their old site, but I can't seem to find it on their new site. There is a section that *says* its going to have an archive of old White Dwarf articles, but it doesn't seem to actually have any such articles archived! And if they do start to archive such articles, it probably won't be exhaustive.
Sooo, I was thinking about starting a WD index here on the Dakka articles because I love to give myself gigantic projects that I never have the time to finish . At least here it would be in the article section (the wiki), so anyone could jump in and contribute if they were so inclined.
But before I embark on something so grandiose, I want to make sure there isn't any other great WD index out there I'm missing. I saw one over on Bolter & Chainsword that was pretty good, but its limited ONLY to 40K stuff. All the other ones that came up in Google seemed to be inactive.
So, does anyone know of a good WD index, or does such a thing not exist anymore now that GW (seemingly) dropped theirs from the website? Or does GW still have one active that I just can't find on their site?
Anyone with such knowledge, I would love to hear from you!

I would certainly enjoy this resource. Even in recent White Dwarf magazines, an occasional nugget of awesomeness slips through.

Sounds good, I think this would be a great idea, as I have a shelfload of WDs going wayyyy back, and can never be bothered to sift through them all
Though I will direct your attention to:

Y'know I went to that page and couldn't find links to anything, I thought there was nothing there. I totally missed that they have links to stuff in the left-had column!
Thanks for that, but looking through what they have its pretty clear they're just archiving random articles...that still doesn't fit the bill as an index for WD in general. So unless someone spots an actual index on the GW site (or knows of another one on another site) I still think the need may be there.

Yeah, the GW WD archive is pretty sparse at present and only has selected articles which all seem to be from the late 2000's from what I can see. I think an index of actual magazines with some sort of contents would be great. I have a box full of old mags that I was going to put on eBay until I realised that a) they don't sell and b) the nostalgia value of some of them is priceless. In the past I've used these sites, although by no means comprehensive. http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/White_Dwarf http://www.hiveworldterra.co.uk/clanbertram_archive/GW/WDarticles.htm There also used to be a webpage archiving site that had a whole host of the US GW site pages before it got 'updated', you could still get into the excellent and sorely missed Black Gobbo page, albeit that some of the pictures wouldn't display, but it was good none the less. I can't seem to find the site now though :( Automatically Appended Next Post: Just stumbled over this from a broken link on Stuff of Legends http://www.gamehobby.net/

Just stumbled over this from a broken link on Stuff of Legends http://www.gamehobby.net/

Good stuff, thanks!
A good archiving site is the wayback machine:
http://waybackmachine.org/
I used it to check out the old GW site and while the old index of (some) WDs is still there, unless its hidden also on the new site the whole point of having a current index of articles coming out today is still needed.
Lexicanum seems to be moving to a new server, so I'm excited to see what that looks like (maybe I'll use the wayback machine to go check that out). The other two links you posted are good finds, but as you say, they are far from exhaustive.
So unless Lexicanum is the holy grail, it doesn't seem like there is an exhaustive WD index kept up anywhere.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
And just to be clear, I'm not thinking of doing a true 'wiki' like Lexicanum is doing (I checked it out using wayback machine), where they have a separate page for each issue.
Instead I was thinking of doing it like so (scroll to the bottom to see the issues I've filled in):
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/WD_index_test
Basically due to character per page limitations it would allow for 25 issues per page.
What do you think?

I know it's not a very good archive at the moment, I pointed it out just in case any copyright stuff would be an issue (as you never know with GW)
and, of course, I wouldn't mind contributing!

One thing to be cautious of in doing this as a Dakka article/wiki is issue numbering between different countries, and varying content.
I know that historically content varied between countries at some times, and at other times that issue numbers were one off.

Thanks for those.
Its still looking like there isn't any current project anywhere doing WD indexing, so the idea of doing it still seems worthwhile. Given how many sites have 'old' WDs indexed it seems to make sense to start with the current issues and then work my way backward.

I was thinking about that, but given that this is mainly something I'd be doing because of my personal interest, it would probably be done from the US perspective (as I have roughly issue 100 to present). Obviously it would be labeled as being the US index and if someone else wanted to do a UK index for the issues that differ, that could certainly be done concurrently on a separate page.

Yeah, I just figured I'd raise the issue to make sure the labeling thing happens; could be a pain if UK users and US users (plus Aussie, etc.) are adding conflicting info, if unaware of the discrepancy.

I think its a pretty tight idea.
Are you going to start from issue 1 and go from there? I would really like to know about those old school ones from way back when. My own colletion starts from around 127-130's, and continues from second editions beginnings till the 310's or so.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

I would suggest checking out some of the links provided above...there are several really good indexes out there for those early White Dwarf issues, including one of those that actually has some rules text copied over from early 40K issues.
As I said, I think I would probably start with the current issues and then work my way back for the simple reason that there are quite a few 'early' indexes available...it seems like nobody is *still* doing it, besides B&C (which only covers 40K articles) and Lexicanum, which seems to be missing random odd issues (and their format of having a sperate page for each issue makes quickly browsing through the list not quite so easy).
Ultimately the reason I wanted to start this is because I forgot which issues many of the Apocalypse datasheets that have come out in the past few years were, so I think having the index covering the WDs that represent the more current editions of the game would be more useful to start with.
Knowing which issue Chapter Approved rules are in is nice and all, but since most of those rules aren't generally used (at least around me) they are of less importance now.
So yeah, my plan would be current issues first, then work my way back. Of course, once I get the format set up, anyone would be able to jump in and add any issues they want, so you could start working on adding earlier issues if that was more of your thing, for example.
