As much as we all love typing, a recent thread talking about phone calls to clarify things got me thinking. Why not have a Vent server for Dakka where people can hang out, talk hobby, and answer questions etc. Ventrilo takes all of 2 minutes to download and set up. I think it'd be cool and I'd definitely be hanging out in the Painting and Fantasy channels. What sayeth the community?

I don't want to ruin my mind's eye view of certain trolls and how I imagine their nasally voices to be.

Ideally it would have the Mods there to keep things from going all troll like.

But short answer for me is yes.

mm. It's a good idea, but I personally would not avail myself of it. I'd imagine it would like a crowd of people, reading aloud various recurring topics from YMDC & the OT forum, asking how you pronounce things, and - if there is no moderation - calling people a certain recently-forbidden word aplenty.

Slam your head hard enough against the desk, the thud should be audible.

I think its certainly worth a shot. If it ends up being some variation on the YMDC theme or some other such uselessness, then the plug can always be pulled. Its not like once its set up its there for all eternity and nothign can be done to change or stop it.

Really useful for P+M discussions, and general. Always good for a listen in, and it has the benefit of an ignore user button.

I do not believe so. Skype does though.

I regularly hang out on the MWG Ventrilo/another Wargamer's Vent server. Or I have a few buddies that I play CSS with in my vent.

Great idea to talk with fellow wargamers and go back and forth. Most of the youtube community hangs out on vent servers.

I put a yes, but that's because I would use it occasionally, I wouldn't make a trip there most days. I usually have too many things going on, surfing the web while watching tv/hulu/dvds/youtube, playing video games, painting and the like.

To sit in a quiet room and just talk? that's not something I really have that much time to do often.

Why not just make a Dakka Dakka tinychat room. Pop a password like Wagh in there and only people who lurk or post can join. Then, we can stream videos or our screens, web cams and talk with voiced, have a chat box, and a whiteboard to draw in. Also, its free. Its what my spriting forum uses to helped others out while spriting.

Had a converstaion with my daughter who tells me people are saying, "lol".
Heard someone say it for myself today. "rollseyes"

Thus people would just say the relevant orkicon at the end of a sentence. "facepalm"
Shirley it could be used constructively to denote closure of a sentence like pilots saying "roger"
Albeit there will be some gobby bleeders that will never shut up! "lol"

People could say their favourite internet memes, "Picard facepalm!"
"Haters gonna hate"
"Kentucky Fried Turnips"
etc

Ventrilo sounds like it will only work if someone shoves their hand up your northwest passage.

Why would you dedicate yourself to paying for a Ventrilo server and having everyone download the client when you could simply use Skype instead. Skype has everything you ask for, and more people use it.

I would use Skype though. Free and sounds like the person is in the room with you.

Just be warned, I do not like talking on phones. I am a guy. I'll probably chat for 3 minutes and stop, unless we are actually discussing something interesting. I don't chat just to chat. We can spend hours talking about movies, 40k, etc, but with my ADHD, I lose interest fast sometimes.

I freakin' hate voice chat. A headseat where random people can yell in my ear is about the dumbest thing this side of a shotgun I could press against my head. But that's just me.

Can't say I'd use it. I'm more comfortable with written medium than I am with verbal medium.

Don't use vent.

Most people have abandoned Ventrilo in favor of Teamspeak or Mumble since Ventrilo stoped updating the client, and the GSM codec.

I'm not so sure it would work in this setting, or work with the theme of this past time.

I even think it ruins immersion in video games. When people started using it in WoW on the RP servers for instance, completely destroys the image when you find out that Thrax the legendary Tauren warrior who has been smiting all before him, and has others cowering in servitude to him, has a voice like a Japanese schoolgirl
