Heyy everyone,

This is my first finished space marine ( there are still a few things to touch up but overall I'm happy with it. )

Looks good for a start, although I would recommend two changes

1: A simple wash of Badab Black on the metal areas, such as the armour joints.

2: Using multiple thinner coats of white instead of one thicker coats would have a much better outcome.

Thanks Valk,

yeah, this was my first time painting white as the primary colour but I'll know in the future!

Thanks for the advice!

Great job for a first time Malice. I agree with Valk in that you should go lighter in coats. I compliment you on your detailing of the marine especially on the eyes. Though, the shading detail is a bit thick on the armor especially the pauldrons and helmet IMO. Nonetheless, great start

I just thought of this why dont you just prime your guys white? easy, even coat and you do less work.

I call shenanigans. That models is WAY too good for a first. That sword is great.
Actually, rereading that, he said it's his first marine, not first mini It's still great, though as they said, you could use some thinner layers to pull detail out.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, that technique for the sword was in white dwarf a few issues ago. You just paint the sword dark and then squiggle some lightning on it with a bright color, then slowly highlight it. The sword probably took 50% of the entire model's time.

Just because its his first Marine dosen't mean his first model. By the way it looks very nice I suggest a light wash on the armour then rehighlite it.

Sorry for the confusion everyone!

This isn't my first model, something like my 5th? I have loads of test models where I test out various techniques and if I like it I keep it for another time

With the power sword/relic blade, I painted it boltgun metal then mithril silver.
Then "washed" it with 4:1 watered down liche purple.
Then painted bits I wanted to be brighter with hormagaunt purple
Then shadow grey for the lightning arcs
Then white on the lightning itself
Finally I painted most of the liche purple areas black, leaving little bits around the lightning and lighter purple patches.

Again sorry for the confusion! But I have only started painting a couple of weeks ago - 3 to be precise!

Thats a pretty confident move painting your commander first. Nicely done!

Looking good malice!

Priming white was mentioned earlier and it is indeed a nice way of getting white done, but you should also look into getting a grey foundation paint like astronomicon grey.

This is an excellent colour to start with if you want to paint white over a black primer, and you can simply mix white into it with some water to create thinned layers It will give very nice coverage and as long as you water it a little, won't look clumpy.

I very much like the sword and base, keep up the great work.

Thanks Ifalna, I've seen your work and it means a lot coming from you!

Thanks everyone for the tips aswell, I'll try them out on some models.

And again, thank you all for the encouragement, it keeps me going
