The Skyrim publisher reported a recent intrusion that nabbed an unspecified number of users' data, but LulzSec is all too happy to give out the details.
http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/220393/bethesda-site-latest-target-for-hackers/
In news that is becoming as regular as a weather report, another big game publisher's web site has been compromised by hackers. In a blog post on Monday, Bethesda Softworks announced an intrusion in their web site network that "may have" exposed user names, addresses, and passwords. Bethesda's post says no "personal financial information" was taken, but still recommended that users on their site change their passwords.
The theft has been claimed by LulzSec, the hacker cabal that everyone's loving to hate. Beyond their intent of doing it "for the lulz," LulzSec wasn't clear on exactly why they went after Bethesda, and their Twitter account has been characteristically sardonic with negotiations, stating they'll keep Bethesda's user database from being released if the company gives "more info on Skyrim," yet adding "we are going to embarrass you anyway. " While Bethesda wasn't specific on how many users were compromised, LulzSec posted another tweet that referenced "200,000+" users with data that could be released, including information on players of their latest title, Brink.
The latest game company to announce it was hacked was Codemasters, who reported a theft of user names, addresses, phone numbers and birth dates on June 3. No one has claimed responsibility for that one yet.
All these hackings are starting to get boring.
As always, just a general "change your account details" warning for anyone here who could have been affected.

At least Bethesda had the balls to come out and say it may have been compromised unlike Sony trying to hide it as long as possible.
The sooner these hacks stop the better.

Do you mean condemn? Because to condone is to approve (unless you do approve of it, then by all means ignore this ).

Lulsec seem to be complete douches, I read in the Metro(yay for small time papers that only UK people have probly heard of) havnt just hacked games sites, but also Porn sites. It was claimed that alot of the accounts they stole were then given to outsiders via twitter to log into their facebook pages and post that they went to the Porn site, pretty low if you ask me.
As i said, sooner it stops the better.

From what I'm understanding, groups like lulzsec just use 4chan as a cover, and a pretty effective cover at that, with all the negative press those guys have had over the years it's not to far of a stretch for people to just lump em together.
I may be completely off, this is just what I've gathered from reading about this crap other places.

Welcome to Dakka, I see you've already started 'Blame the Victim' 101.
Seriously pal, just because a company makes a game that you happen to not enjoy it doesn't mean hackers should take the information from their customers. I guess that while you were writing your comments you didn't let your prefrontal cortex do any work and forgot that the hackers didn't shut down Bethesda, they stole consumer information from the people who play Brink.

Because likely most of them are a group of stupid kids.
Groups like "Lulsec" and "Anonymous" aren't really picky about who joins or why. They're not really organizations for that matter, with many of their 'members' just saying they belong because it's convenient to have a group name to hide behind if you ever get rolled up by law enforcement. You can start trying to negotiate a lighter sentence or even simply probation by saying "I can tell you who runs X if you give me Y".
It's honestly the biggest thing those groups have going for them. There's so many small-time hackers who just say "Lulz Anon=win!" alongside of their shenanigans that it throws investigators off the scent of the 'real' members.
SilverMK2 wrote:But then companies shouldn't be taking information that they don't actually need, and keeping the information that they do have and do need secure.
Agreed to an extent. Some of the "information that they don't actually need" isn't datamined by the companies, but is rather from their webstores--which are secured against most forms of attacks.
It's the whole "directed attack with specific aims" part that causes many of the issues in these situations.
Think of it like besieging a castle. The gates are barred and reinforced. You can pound on it all you want with a battering ram, but it's not going down.
You can try to smash the walls all you want--but they're not going down either.
But then if you mine underneath of the walls, all of a sudden...you're in. In the process though, you've collapsed the walls and now not just you with your specific aim of taking the ledgers of your merchantile rival can get in--but so can the hordes of butchers wanting to slaughter the residents of the castle.
That is what we saw happen with Sony, but likely won't see happen with Bethesda.

Anyone who actually understands the reason that the axiom "One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist" is a logical fallacy, perhaps?
I disliked Fallout 3. I dislike Bethesda and their release strategies.
However, that doesn't give me the right to be a complete and utter douche and release people's private information just because they've utilized the company's services before.
The fact that you justify this attack because "Fallout 3 was bad!" is disturbing, to say the least.

Its wrong yet strangely entertaining. Also shows how vulnerable security systems worldwide are even for professionals in the programming industry. As long as no bodily harm is done and systems are improved then thats all you can really ask for. Oh yea and recruit those hackers for the FBI or put 'em behind bars for a while.

The videogame industry is in need a meltdown, even if it is a rather harsh one. I'm quite glad to see it happen. The people currently supporting Bethesda and their DLC spam are not real people, they're cattle. Hopefully not too many of them fall off the cliff before getting the message.

So what you're saying is that innocent gamers deserve to have their private information scattered around the internet and given to asshats to to with it what they will, because they buy from a certain developer?
I suppose you also condone their actions against the Minecraft servers as well; damn Mojang and their undeserved right to create a game for the millions of players world-wide who already enoy it, damn them!!

They deserve it for supporting a company that places priority on pumping out sub-par DLC content rather than security and their personal information.
