Though the picture is really dark, what I can see is a really nice color choice for red...
As for the camera - a cheap example is Canon's PowerShot A490. This is a new camera for $99.99 (why they always have to set such stupid price and not round 100?). BUT you can even save MORE money and buy used camera. I personally still use old 4 Mpix camera and can ensure you that it is enough - you just need to set external light source and use the most simple tripod. Hope that helped!

Thanks for the suggestion, the red is called British Crimson by model master paints, to belive it or not, this was after it was hilighted by the auto adhust function offered when you upload pics, the orginals are much darker

pawn shops are your friend. $40 for my H-P, just make sure it has all of the cords/chargers whatever it needs. Mine takes AA batteries and a USB cable so I was set

I use a Cannon Powershot A480 and every pic I have on Dakka has been taken with it. I know almost nothing about photography (with exception to some advice for you below) and most of my photos look decent.

Some tips to help you take better pictures regardless of the camera:

- make sure that your primary light source is in front of (meaning shining in front of rather than behind) your subject. It reduces shadow.

- Provide proper lighting and turn off your flash. Reduces the explosive glare in close-up photos.

- Check your current camera and see if it has a Macro function. if it does, experiment with it for a while and you may find that the camera you have is more than adequate.

Oh yeah... as for the model, sick conversion. I like this.
