I did not want to hijack the other thread about liking a GW store's Facebook page, so I figured I would start a new thread.

What do you think of GW stores' Facebook pages? Do you think this is just an attempt by management to put some BS numbers in the next investor bulletin? (Look our stores got a gazillion likes on FB) Do you think that they serve a real function?

I am kind of perplexed, as the net is usually used as a form of advertising. However, we all know that GW does not advertise.

On a boat, Trying not to die.

Er... My FLGS has a Facebook page. This is an easier way to reach the peoples about news and info. Not everyone checks GW, and people can look at local events, contest, tournies, etc.

Games Workshop isn't evil, guys. They just make bad mistakes.

As another user said elsewhere, they are a very powerful, useful and dangerous tool that GW (being afraid of Mr Internet and all) probably does not fully understand. All it takes is one (or more) rogue staffers to use their FB pages to spread muck about the company. They're on dangerous ground with it, more or less giving every member of staff the opportunity to cause PR havoc if they so wish.

I hope they do go ahead and join the internet era and exploit social media to their benefit. I would rather look at my local stores page then a company wide page.

It was explained to me this way:

Facebook is the new word of mouth.

Games Workshop does not advertise the traditional way. They sell a niche product for a small audience, so standard mass advertising tactics don't work.

If you like Warhammer, odds are your friends might be interested in it too.

When you "like" your local store's page, when the GW store makes a post it appears on your news feed. Thus, your friends might see it and get interested in Warhammer as well.

Makes sense to me.

Exalted!

This post makes allot of sense to me as well, nice to see someone using their noggin rather than the usual OMG GW = Evil Empire nonsense.

Seems like another reason to ignore Facebook to me.

I understand the concept, but I just do not think FB will work for GW stores at this point. GW stores around here are too small to have tournies. Three tables are just not enough for a tourney. They also no longer have prize support or raffles. We all know that they do not have sales. Thus, what could they possibly post on FB that is useful? Please come to my store I just changed the paint water. I don't think that will bring customers in.

It works for my local.
People post up painted stuff, big games are advertised without having to go into the shop, changes in opening hours are put up.
Recently the shop was stocktaking, so was opening late.
A post on Facebook saved me from going into town when the shop would have been closed.

I think it's a positive step.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

For FB pages to be of use, the home office over at GW would have to have an idea of what the Facebook page is really for.

AS I already see that they hvae a website, no matter how lame...

I see them agknowledging the fact that they have no clue as to how to use the internet.

"Liking" someone is about useless in the grand scheme of things. GW is still going to pull stupid crap and do what they want to to you, and you won't get any reaction aside from...

GW doesn't pay attention to those crumbsnatchers from the internet... Whatever GW does is peaches and cream.

If they would change thier doubletaslk corperate lackey routine, they would actually use there site, the interaction, and feedback to incrases thier sales, aside form using it as the tool of the devil and trying to keep thier head in the sand.

Oh, and by the way- these GW employees are breaking thier corperate swill NDA's and posting their emplyment details out there to be seen, without GW's consent. I don't expect that other kid to keep thier job when someone decided from GW corperate to go look this guy up and start asking some questions....

People get fired for thier FB pages all the time.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I personally love my GW's facebook page. For one thing the info section has their hours, and since I go in infrequently, I can always check if they are open or not. The other great thing is I can ask the manager questions without going in. Like when they changed to the new paint pots, I asked him about them, and he answered pretty quickly. He also announces tournaments, special hours/closings, and puts up random pictures from games. For someone who goes there maybe once a month, it is a great window into what is going on there.

You would be amazed Thaanos - it's about 10 games, half a dozen movies and a billion $ in Nintendo's pocket since then!

Regarding the OP, I think it's an excellent idea. Let customers know about upcoming events, releases and offers, things like that.

Good to see GW are finally embracing some new(ish) technology rather than treating the internet as something completely separate to their interests.
