'Sup dudes.
For no apparent reason, I'm feeling slightly nostalgic. It might be related to the Quest thread I started, but can't be sure.
Anyways, we've all been at some point or other NooBs. Now, most of us are grizzled veterans. Yet there is that bizarre gray area in between, a period of what was for me, a good couple of years. I'd been around the block once, and having started on Space Hulk and Tyranid Attack, my brother and I moved into Epic.
This was the heyday of my Hobby. Space Marine, Titan Legions, and most of the army expandsions were ours. I remember a particular Christmas. We were up in Scotland staying at Gran's. Being Christmas, ourr wallets were overflowing with cold, hard cash (very cold as it happens, being in a wallet in Scotland during winter). So we do what you'd expect two wide eyed rebels with a pocket full of cash and a new game to play...we head up the Royal Mile and spunk it all on Epic models! I couldn't tell you 100% what we bought, but we were fairly sensible. We took the unit cards with us, and made sure the purchases were paying off. On the way home, we managed to jump on the wrong bus, and wound up with a bit of a walk back to Gran's.
Ahh, cold fingers fumbling at blister packs, frantic wishing we'd grabbed the other Warhound Titan, with the Vulcan Megabolter and Plasma Blastgun, instead of the one with the Turbo Laser.
Quite a happy memory, and whenever the temprature drops suitably, I remember that, and get all nostalgic for Epic!

I remember getting my first two boxes of 40k goodness: a box of twenty Catachans and a Citadel paint starter set with five marines, eight pots of paint and a starter brush. I still use that brush.

Walking past my old local GW in Peterborough on a sunny Saturday in 1992ish.... Seeing all those fresh faced kids having fun, the red shirts who really cared about the hobby and not the bottom line in sales. Wandering in and within minutes playing a demo game of 40k with another total noob and being taken through the game step by step, overwatch, throwing grenades, running, CC. And coming away totally enchanted by the universe and the miniatures.
Going back a week later with mum in tow and walking out with the starter box of 40k, taking it home and ripping the mini's off of the sprues, playing through the scenarios with my lil bro and both of us becoming totally hooked.
Good times people, good times.......

I remember in 8th grade when my friend let me borrow the 3rd edition Big Black Book for a few days. I read the hell out if it every chance I got.
I also remember getting my first box of Dark Eldar Warriors and assembling them at my desk. The glue I used was some sort of rather thick Testor's glue. It smelled like oranges, and I don't know why. Now whenever I smell oranges, I think of those Dark Eldar I bought in... it must've been 1999.

I remember one of my dad's friends was editing their book range in the early 90s and bought us Space Hulk and gave me a voucher for christmas. I don't know if GW do birthday/gift cards any more. Anyway we had this voucher, but had to travel to Bristol to spend it, because there wasn't a GW in Wales!! I had the plastic predator which was a new release back then.

Back in 3rd edition. I'd 'played' through 2nd edition, but not much, as I didn't get much fun out of my brother and his friend repeatedly curb stomping me.
When 3rd rolled around and I started a new army - Salamanders, I also changed schools, and found someone who played at the new school. After we graduated, we spent the next few years playing 2-3 times a week, usually getting in 3 games each time.
Never had so much fun playing 40k. Then we discovered Counter Strike, and 40k eventually stopped being played.

I must have been about 14; it was probably 2005. Historicon has always had great fleamarkets, and while I'd bought 40k figures there before for my homebrew games, this time I got the 3rd ed starter set for about $20. In the 7 hour car ride back home, I pored through the rulebook just gushing over all the seemingly complex rules, awesome paintjobs, and incredible artwork. I didn't end up playing 40k proper until the Dark Angels codex came out, but whenever I look at that old rulebook, late 90s GW models, or am on exceptionally long car rides, I always think back to being a teenager, long car trips with my dad and a few buddies, and 40k.
The summer before, the two buddies who came along played a lot of my homebrew rules with me. We ended up playing an 8 hour long game, from 10pm til sunrise. It ended with my Marine standard bearer finally getting overrun by the hordes of fantasy orcs, lightly armed militia, and genestealers on top of the cardboard fortress my army was defending. My rules were horribly unbalanced, not well playtested, and about as well thought out as you'd expect from a freshman in highschool. Regardless, that still remains one of my favorite gaming memories. I miss being grown up and not having 3 months off to game with your buddies every summer.

My happiest hobby memories are of playing Space Marine, Man O' War, Bloodbowl & White Dwarf.
They were, to me anyway, trully great games - easy to learn & fun to play and a real joy to paint the models.
I also Loved WD back when these games were supported. I'd eagerly devour the battle reports, hobby/modelling articles & re-read them time & again.

Same here, Space Marine, Adeptus Titanicus, then Epic & Titan Legions....aww the good old days. I really miss playing that game. White Dwarf was something I waited for each month then hurried down to GW on Sat morning to see all the new months goodness.
I couldn't wait to see what crazy rules andy c and JJ came up with. I loved Nigel Stillmons articles on terrain making. It seemed Andy C had the ability to write a short story and make people care about the charactors a paragraph in.
I still remember getting my first issue, WD124 and thinking ' WTF is this crazy stuff!' dark future cover, some realm on chaos stuff in there, some ROC 'Eavy Metal..... then picking up the back issues and reading all about fantasy, 40k, blood bowl, the Horrors of the Horus Heresy played out in Space Marine with giant God Machine's of the Colega Titanicus.... how could a 12-13 year old sci-fi nut not be hooked?

Hi all,
I remeber going down to London to visit freinds and do some sight seeing.
However , Frank had just bough Dark Future, and after the first evening of playing , the ONLY sights I saw were mounted on my inteceptor!DAKKA DAKKA!
Later, back home we started a Blood Bowl league that ran for 8 years!
And my most happy Orky moment in Epic Space Marine , taking out Andy's Warlord Titan with a Gut Buster Belly Kannon shot...(after he spent 2 days telling me how cool and 'indestructible' it was.)

My best hobby memory was when I first got my AOBR box delivered. There was so much stuff in it. I had a really great time fitting it all together and seeing just how neat all those little bitz were. There was so much promise in setting all those little amy doods up in little formations. It was a box of "good times to come", and it's henceforth generally delivered on that.
Dammit. I just realized that was 3 years ago, and I have yet to build those Deffcoptas.

Back in the fantastic old 2nd edition. Me and my brother went in to Cambridge GW when it was still down at the quayside. We played a game of marines vs orks and I killed his ork dreadnought with a krak missle first turn. I got into the hobby my brother didn't, amazing the difference 1 krak missle can make. that must have been at least 1993, I was 11/12, bloody hell. I remember going into that store and watching EPIC being played, god I thought it was cool.
basically 19/20 years this hobby has been in my life, unreal!!

One of my favourite wargaming memories is the the smell of the old GW plastic glue, the stuff that came in a bottle with in-built brush (going back to 1999-2000 here).
It's never smelt the same since that bottle, but every time I catch a whiff of some form of industrial poly-cement that uses the same recipe it brings back those naive days of 2nd ed starter boxes and trying to assemble a 2nd ed rhino on fold-up TV table in my nan's house after school.
Any chance we can poll the mods/legoburner for a 'eyes glassed over in a nostalgic flashback' orkmoticon?

You obviously never played orks vs tyranids in those days. I had one opponent and he played nids.
Figuring out i needed over 3 orks to reasonably take out a stealer, yep that hurt!
MY opponent asking me why do you always hang on the back line and fire with heavy weapons? my answer: it's the only thing that works

Going into my FLGS (there weren't any GW shops then) and being able to buy a dozen Citadel figures for under £5. This was back in 198...cough. Mind you, you had to paint them with Humbrol enamels as acylics weren't really around then.

Yeah, people complain about tyranids today, the 2nd edition Genestealer rules were insane. They had a higher WS, S and A than many characters. If they got into hand to hand, you were dead.
