Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen, Ogryns, Etc,..
Hi, I'm me.
Basically new to 40k - dabbled in it very briefly nearly 20 years ago but got out because amongst other things, the Leman Russ really annoyed me (original kit came out about 93/94 I think, but don't remember if it was resin like the early Rhinos), and so did GW's pricing tactics (beer was cheaper then too, I remember that clearly). Getting back into it because I fancy modelling a few tanks and like the IG design language if not most of the actual vehicles.
Don't know whether it's OK to post questions as well as introductions here, if not, can one of the mods move the thread please - and then tell me where it is..
So I want to build a mainly tank IG army that's playable, but is also mostly made up of the vehicles I'm actually interested in building. And light on infantry because I don't really enjoy painting figures. Wherever possible I want to have models that clearly represent things listed under the rules (WYSIWYG seems fair to me) even if they non Mars-pattern and have swapped wheels for legs or whatever- I'd rather spend my playing time on strategy rather than arguing about the legality and points value of a unit. For the same reason, if I can, I plan to use enough GW/FW bits to pass the 50% rule even if the end result doesn't look like the picture on the box.
First question is what books do I really need (money spent on rule books = money not spent on beer or models), and how possible is it to make an army playable under the different rulesets? I've borrowed the IG Codex version5 (remember when a whole codex could be fittted into a white dwarf article?..) and figure that's a must, but comparing it with the Imperial Armour books, there seem to be some pretty hefty changes in points value between the two. AND, most of the interesting vehicles - centaur, macharius etc - seem to only appear in the apocalypse version. Is there any point in trying to make an army suitable for both, or would I basically going to wind up with two armies that use the same MBT squadron and heavy support? If so, I guess it makes more sense to go down the codex track..
Thanks,
Bloodnok

Welcome to the jungle mate.
I know little about Imperial Guard, I always found them quite boring personally. But, I am one for abstract colours and tentacles... Though, their tanks are pretty impressive
Good luck with the army, And again, Welcome to Dakka.
p.s. Baneblade is quite cool!

Welcome to Dakka!. The two books you will need are the IG codex and the main rule book. As for the IA books, those are not really needed unless you feel as if you must play with Forge-world models. If you're just starting out, stay away from them for now, since they'll be packed full of confusing rules (some of them are not really updated for 5th edition) as well as players who won't want to play against Forge-world models. They have an unfortunate reputation of being underpriced/overpowered ( I don't see it, personally).
Apocalypse and "vanilla" 40k are very different, in all honesty I'd suggest building your main force up to 2000 points, then after that focus on Apocalypse.

Welcome to dakka
I would definatly stay away from the IA book and apocalypse untill you have found a place that like to play those rules often, also get your main force to 2000 (3000 would be ideal) points and then you could focus on apocalypse, if you prefer your tanks then get some players who dont mind house games (ie you forfeit your fast and elite choices to take heavys in their place etc etc) also look carfully into what you can get away with in dedicated transports to get them into heavy territory. im afraid i know very little about IG so i cant advise brilliently.
Enjoy your stay Dalveen

Thanks All,
Sounds like my gut feeling was right - I'll be avoiding IA rules and vehicles, at least for the time being, and claiming my creations are equivalents of things in the main codex.
@Dalveen - I should probably have said that by 'tanks' I didn't just mean MBT's but also light tanks and armoured cars which I can put in the fast attack slots as long as they're equivalent to scout/armoured sentinel or helhound (probably devildog) variants. Pity, cos I could have really used the centaur as a platform. Thing that might be a stumbling block is that under codex rules, it looks as though all the vehicles in a squadron have to be basically the same type. Think I'll wind up treating my Macharius Vanquisher lookalike as a fully-optioned Russ Vanquisher and building it a spare turret with only one main gun.

Welcome to the Dakka!
I'm in a similar situation, I've returned to 40k after decades away and I'm at a loss. I've got a good FLGS and some friends there willing to deal with my ineptitude.
I like the idea of alternative models being legal, I think the scale is 1/35 or 1/48 and I've looked into acquiring similar models and bit'ng them up to make them legal.
If you've got pics I'd love to check out your work.
