Hello everyone,
I have joined the hobby about a year ago. And on my travels to the GW workshop I have picked White dwarf a few times. I really enjoyed reading some of the modelling and painting advice but always find it to much of a sales catalogue rather than a proper magazine and it is not exactly cheap even if I split the cost most of the times with my flatmate. As with most GW products I know there is always an alternative somewhere which is normally cheaper and offers the same if not better quality. So dakka which are the alternatives currently on the market for modelling and hobby needs?

There are only a few I have ever seen here in the UK. Well in WHSmith anyways. http://www.wargamesillustrated.net/ http://www.atlanticpublishers.com/magazines/miniature-wargames/ http://www.atlanticpublishers.com/magazines/battlegames/ Atlantic are also bringing out a Sci-fi related mag called Darker horizons later in the year, which will be bi-monthly I think. You won't find much in the way of GW in them mind, although hobby articles can be useful. I don't pick up any of them often, but I have several in the house.

I know the books and I plan to pick up the masterclass second volume for my birthday in a couple of weeks.
The fine scaler magazine seems to be quite good but it does appear to be available in the UK unfortunately
I will go to WHSmith and take a look. I normally prefer the how paint and model stuff articles so even if it is not GW it might be useful. Plus I don't know much of the game systems/ miniatures outside the GW universe so having a look at what is out there is also good.
Thank you very much for the information and keep them coming.

There is a Kindle version, but I'm not sure if the US and UK kindles are anything like the US and UK DVD players.
That would suck...

Differing publishing regs in different countries are what limit the availability of the same electronic content (in Oz, for example, our publishing industry is protected by several layers of laws - so the same textbooks that are available for downlioad in the UK or US just cannot be purchased here.
FSM is what got me into SF modelling (it was their SF special back in about 1982 or so - showing hows-to for x-wings, cylon raiders, tie fighters, Space 1999 eagles). It's still good for things like modelling hair (ok, normally at 1/35 - but while the scale is larger, the techniques are the same - and the larger pics make it easier).
