I've always had a fascination with the Night Lords, something about them just tickles my fancy. I wanted to try to make a list using the current C:SM codex to accurately portray them as much as I could.

Well, without further ado, here's my current list:

HQ
Chaos Lord
-MoS
-Daemon Weapon
-Melta-Bombs
-Jump Pack/Wings
-Combi-Weapon

ELITES
3x5 Chosen Squads w/ PF Champion
-4xMelta
-IoCG
-Rhino
-Combi-melta

TROOPS
3x10 CSM w/ PF Champion
-2xPlasma guns
-IoCG
-Rhino
-Extra Armour
-Havoc Launcher

FAST ATTACK
11 Raptors w/ PF Champion
-2xMelta
-MoS

the Idea is to rhino rush as normal with the CSM squads, outflanking all of the chosen squads in their rhino's and using the Lord with the Raptors to either tie up enemy CC squads or to hit my opponents soft spots. Thoughts? Opinions?

You can bring jump pack marines as troops, so you could have an all jump pack army. That seems pretty Night Lordy. Plus the over charged vehicles.

If you'd like to use the chaos marine codex, the list looks pretty good. I'd avoid the daemon weapon on the lord as you're likely to bonk yourself in the head with it. Why not give him lightning claws? That seems very appropriate for the Night Lords.

I wouldn't bother giving the chosen the power fist. What are the chances that they will get into hand to hand before being killed? The 4x melta are already there to deal with tanks anyway. The extra armor and havoc launchers don't have much of a role either.

Being fast is definitely a trait of the Night Lords, but I don't think a NL force would consist of nothing but jump packs. Although it is something interesting to look at.

Noted.

Further, you can get furious charge on nearly every model very easily.

There is also a psychic power, fear of darkness (?), that seems very night lordy and could be used to great effect.

Not mention the dex is more CC oriented in general which is appropriate.

I think if your using night lords then you should use the chaos codex. If you want the benifits of blood angels then build blood angels. Also dump mos if you want to be fluffy.

C:CSM is too stale to appropriately represent the night lords fluff. So by either using MoS, (which is not considered competitive) or by using C:BA (distasteful in your opinion), OP is being fluffy and staying true to the nature of the hobby.

Maybe he should build a BA successor chapter that uses bat iconography and paints its armor in dark blue with a lightning motif...

Honestly, I don't like it that so many people say that C:CSM is stale or worthless. It's still a decent dex, no it's not 3rd edition, but it's not all that bad. And no, it's not super competitive like BA, Crons, SW or just (IMO) overpowered like GK.

I also am just not a fan of the BA codex. I just don't find it all that interesting. It's just a competitive dex, nothing fun or special about it. I'd prefer to use MoS to represent the night lords "getting the jump" on their opponents. Being experts at ambush and terror tactics, I feel that them having I5 could help represent that. Hell, I might even use Counts as Noise Marines, and give them storm bolters just for gaks and giggles.

The Only exception to this is I do like the BA's fast transport options and the Baal Predator. Whether or not I'm willing to compromise for those I have yet to decide. I have also thought about using C:SM and using a Counts as Khan for outflanking fun. Thoughts?

I like it. I'd definitely say, stick to the CSM codex. And I see no reason why the chaos lord needs to get rid of MoS to be fluffy. Sure, the Night Lords in general aren't aligned to any particular Patron God, but I can certainly envision certain individuals who have a tendency towards one god over the others.

After looking at all of my options I have decided to stick with C:CSM. I just feel like it portrays Night Lords just fine, and I'd rather not have to play using C:BA, C:SM, or C:SW. They just don't give the right feel to the army in my opinion.

After some play testing and tweaking I believe I've found my final 2000pt list:

HQ
Lucius the Eternal (Using a counts as lord of my own making, will be sure to make it WYSIWYG)

Elites
7 Chosen in Rhino(TL bolter)
-PF
-3xPW
-Flamer
-MoK (Using it to represent them being veteran CC specialists)

Troops
3x10 CSM w/ PF Champion in Rhino(TL bolter)
-2xPlasma
-IoCG

Heavy Support
3x8 Havocs w/ PF Champion in Rhino(TL bolter)
-4xMelta
-IoCG

Thoughts?

Seems like a lot of fun... but to have no anti-tank beyond the range of 12'' will limit the army quite a lot IMO. Maybe switch a squad of havocs for something with more range?

It still looks fun, just a bit limited.

As stated above, i am not interested in using C:BA. I'm not a fan of the book. I'm not interested in Jump troops.

How about pit some raptors back in to go with the clawed lord - i think raptors (or bat-tors) are Night lordy... But i dunno about sqeezing some dstriking oblits in. Maybe not so fluffy but i am sure i'd be pretty terrorised with a few of them materialising in front of me!

I'm glad you swapped out the chosen with PW for termies, much more points efficient. I think your last list looks pretty solid for an all marine chaos list (no cult troops or monsters etc)

Maybe swap one of the 4 x autocannon havoc squads for a 4 x ML for some extra strength armour punching goodness.

Lastly, and this is my own personal choice, not necessarily the most optimum, but have you considered a LR for your termies and lord?

I have indeed considered a LR, and I like the idea, I'm just trying to find a way to fit it into the list. I'll tool around with it and see what I can come up with.

Well, after some more playtesting I've come to what I believe is the list I was searching for.

HQ
Chaos Lord w/ jump pack
-2x LC's

TROOPS
4x10 CSM w/ PF Champ
-2 Plasma
-IoCG

FAST ATTACK
10 Raptors w/ PF Champ
-2 flamers

HEAVY SUPPORT
3x5 Havocs
-3 Autocannon
-1 Lascannon
-IoCG

CSM in rhinos advance to meet the opponent ant take objectives, Havocs sit in cover and pop transports and later blast troops if need be, Raptors and Lord trail rhinos and assault problem units. It's not the most competitive neckbeardy cheeselist in the world, but it's fun to play. and well rounded IMO.

Swap the Lord's jump pack for wings. All the pros without the cons.
