On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Hey guys,

Just had a note in the latest Maelstrom Games email about a wargaming Magazine, 'Ravage'. Just a quick email really to see if anyone has tried it, and if this is the magazine that the sci-fi/fantasy wargaming market has been lacking?

It's priced at £5, and comes out every month. At the moment they have just released issue 2 - Magazine covers below, it certainly looks quite professional but I would be interested to know if it is worth adding to my next Maelstrom order!

It's the content I'm more curious about. Sure, looks dandy with all those different logos up front, but I'm curious as to how they treat it all.

I have issue #1, but can only give some general impressions not a detailed review.

First impression: what a cool magazine!

The good: It's full color, includes game reviews, rules expansions, painting step-by-step, and previews of upcoming releases. The best part? It is not exclusive to one manufacturer!

The meh: It's only 66 pages; I wish there was more. There are some horrendous typos. I had to put it down because they were so bad. I think it was a translation, but still, very painful.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. I will be picking up #2 as soon as I can.

It's a translation of a French magazine that has been around for a while.

It is very pretty, but to be honest, issue 1 was pretty boring read. Just (uber-positive) reviews of games I was already well aware of from t'internet, really.

Still, the eye candy was nice. And it was the first I had heard of Confrontation Phoenix - which is probably because I haven't been looking hard enough online, and I tend to stay well away from Coolminiornot as it tends to be not my taste.

If that sort of thing is worth 5 of your Earth pounds, then fine. For me, it wasn't but YMMV.

May change though, if they get better and start doing other material than reviews and interviews.

Cheers

Interesting... I've seen some of the old French magazines but never come across any English translations.

Will have to give this a go.

I have some of the old french magazines from 10 years ago. Back then, it was definitely high quality, with lots of worthwhile reviews and gaming ideas for a wide range of miniature-based games. I'm curious how the english version is.

Just a quick notification for anyone living in the UK who wants to buy the magazine - since Maelstrom closed down (and to be fair, sometime before then!) there hasn't been anywhere to buy Ravage Magazine easily.

Well - that has now changed. Found out that 'Valiant Wargames' are now selling it (as well as a range of other miniatures for Infinity, Malifaux and Dark Age amongst others). Well worth checking out - I really think this is the gaming mag that the wargaming industry is missing, so I would thoroughly recommend checking it out!

It may only be 66 pages long but it contains far more content than White Dwarfs 140 pages. Yup it's riddled with typos which I'm sure are just translation.

It feels like a fairly amateur magazine, but I think it's great anyway. I'm glad it's available over here again!

I like Ravage a lot, it's put out by Coolminiornot (a local company for me ) and a few of the writers are locals from my store. They recently picked up a new editor, so the typos should disappear.

Haven't had a chance to read it yet as the five issues I ordered on back issue have yet to arrive from cool mini, so far it's 24 days and counting despite Chen Ann recently stating shipping to the UK should arrive within a week. So all I can really add is don't order it from cool mini.
