Better than my first models, the Moria Goblins from the Lord of the Rings paint set. They don't look that bad imho.

Not bad at all for a first model. There's a few spots where the paint ran over a detail or you didn't finish the entire detail, but you'll improve over time and getting some good paint will help. I would suggest getting one of the games workshop starter paint sets. They come with a few basic colors to get you started and they have 4 or 5 figures that you can use as paint scheme test models or to add to you force. Good stuff and I look forward to seeing more.

You'd be surprised what you can do with horribly cheap paints. Just wash and dry brush and no one will ever be the wiser. Usually >.>

Look pretty damn good for first models. I've been using the same michael's/walmart paints from the beginning and they work out fine. Certainly a much cheaper alternative for an already expensive hobby. I recommend making up something called a wash though, out of black paint and water. Something like 1:20 or 1:30 paint:water. When you're completely done painting the model(and it's completely dry) use a brush to coat the whole model in a thin layer of the wash. It really REALLY helps finish the look of the model, especially when using the crappy paints. It's goes into the recesses of the details and makes them pop out. You can do it with any color too, not just black, but black and brown are the most common.

I painted it a light tan, washed it with muddy brown. i had a drop of dish soap in the brush water that i used to make the wash... not sure if that did anything.

I got some Reaper paint and some GW washes. They work much better. Here are A few more troops started with them. Need some touch ups but mostly where i want them
