I am close to finishing my GK army, and am thinking about getting into a csm army when I am done.I know that they have new models come out, as well as the 6th ed codex. Has anyone played against or played a csm army with the new codex? i am just looking for some input via a Pros /Cons of starting a new csm army.

Thanks for the input

I am loving CSM. Now, its going to play quite a bit different, but there are some tough units and fun combos in this dex. So many people had such high (unrealistic) wishlists and some also just wanted one of the most broken codex's ever to return (3.5). So they're a little upset.

My favorite unit in this codex: A Khorne Lord with a daemon weapon on a Juggernaught with a sigil of corruption.

That's an average of 10 AP 2 Init 5 at Str 6 when charging... serious ouch for MEQ, even TDA... oh, and it costs less than 180 pts

thanks for the input,It would be a whole new army to me not familiar with 5 ed. rules for csm. I am definitely looking for a good army, but i am more looking forward to the modeling part of it,what sort of fun combos are there in the new codex? I am not looking for broken.

My first question is why chaos?

Is it because they have a new book?

If so, no you shouldn't start chaos.

Otherwise, do whatever.

I'm also a GK player started to play 40k this past June and I started to trickle some CSM purchases into my 40k budget. My personal reasons are that I picked my army on what the pictures in the codex looked like. So it was tied between knights in space or evil space marines. The knights in space won but now I'm starting my second choice from the begining. If you want to pick CSM on the reason that they have a new codex in a new edition and you just want to roflstomp people... well your going to be dissappointed. Its a very balanced codex to the points that all of the MEQ troops are almost copy paste. If you want to roflstomp still fight on GK brother, fight on.

I need to return some video tapes.

if your only army is GK, i would play a non Meq for your second. Take up something that requires a different play style. I have CSM and DE and they really compliment each other as they play completely differently. There are no choices they have in common.

If you went to CSM from GK, there would be certain choices that would feel all too familar. O so a dreadnaught, a rhino, termites, libby/sorcs just the same thing in a different color.

To continue this excellent post... It might also be wiser to take a second army that can ally with your first. Then as it grows you can use a few units here and there and develop fun combos between the two.

If you have to ask strangers, the answer is no.

Read the codex, see if it interests you, see if the models look fun to paint and convert, and then decide.

There is nothing more satisfying than watching your opponent scream in horror as you turn their precious Eldrad Uthran into a mindless chaos spawn.

Chaos has some of the most fun and satisfying psyker powers available.

Chaos can dish out alot of damage, Although their units cost more than standard marines they get better abillities and devastating weapons.

You should only start a CSM army if you want to start a CSM army. Whether or not they have a new codex should be irrelevant, because if you're starting a chaos army proper, it will be some time before you are able to field a painted army.

If you want to field the newest army without regard to any of the fluff or hobby aspects of the game, then I agree, odds are, you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

From a pure modelling standpoint, CSM are probably one of the better armies. Due to the nature of the units themselves (crazy bastards who already love to customize their armor, some of whom have been stuck in the Eye of Terror for centuries or longer), there is pretty much no limit to what you could choose to greenstuff or convert.

Want a marine with two heads? Tzeentch is down with that.

Want a marine with tyranid claws? Sounds like a Possessed to me.

You can screw with the models in pretty much whatever manner you deem fit and due to the taint of Chaos anything can be rationalized.

I would, however, echo the sentiments of others with starting up a second Meq army before trying anything else. It gets boring as hell painting that many variations of pretty much the same army. I tried going into BA after my CSM army and couldn't bear to finish painting the bastards since it was too much lather, rinse, repeat. Necrons have taken the monotony out of the never-ending-MEQ-spree, and it's nice to alternate which units I paint so that I don't get bored with it.

Thank you for the input all, and before my gk i was a ork player so i know how a hoard based army plays,, the new codex is a small influence, but not the main part, the models and the good vs evil aspect of the csm vs gk are what interest me, granted they may still be a meq based armies but they are still 2 different armies. If all else fails i will expand my gk army beyond a 2000+ point army list..
